Diary of Alfred E. Potter November, 1943

01.  Monday: Thres –Mary Anne – and myself to seven oclock Mass at St. Vincents.  Coal mines are taken over by the government, 530 000 Miners are on a general strike and will be expected to be back to work Wednesday.              Com.  Katherine Holzbauer           Ind.  John Beerntsen –Charles R. 02.  Tuesday: [N] To St. Vincents with Thres to 630 and 700 Oclock Masses.  It is much colder of today.  Had a letter from Donald.                  Com.  Most forsaken soul in Purgatory. Ind.  Pancratius – Mary Drexler – John Drexler – Louis Miller
03.  Wednesday: Drive to Milwaukee with Thres.  Stopped to see Mr. Haas (Howdin Distilled).  Yahr-Lange Walter Lange waited on me, met Mr. Donovan new head of liquor dept. also Dr. Egan, Tom Adkins, to McKesson Milwaukee Drug Co., Jerry Savage waited on me, also Matt Lauer to Mutual Drug, John Lange took care of me, to A.C. McClurg, Dick Lynch waits me A.C. Grace is also on the job with the usual ticket for lunch at Fritz Gust’s.  Over to Carl and Margarets and little Gail.  Romy Antkosky is there also and Ma Anna Drexler.  Home at 845 and Joe and Anna Weisheipl –Lena Baier – Thres Fretchel are over for party on yours truly.  Took them home about 1.45 A.M. and am I tired, wow!
04.  Thursday: This is my birthday.  Born Nov. 4 – 1890, figure it out yourself, old enough to play golf, but play sheephead and cribbage.  No excitement, just another busy day at the store.  A lovely day this morning, rain this afternoon.
05.  Friday: To Saint Vincents Church at 7 A.M.                      Com.  Donald – Mary Ann
06.  Saturday: Emma Siewert is 57 years old today.
07.  Sunday: To Saint Johns Church at 730 Thres and Mary Ann also attend.  To work until 115 then dinner then two deliveries.  Laid down for a half hour, then out to Sunnyview to visit Tony Pable.  He is transferred to a smaller room.  The weather is rather inclement today, rain most of the time.  To work at 6 P.M. to 800 then to the post office and over to Wm and Emm Siewerts.  Otto Lemke and Clara are there.  Six handed sheephead until 2 A.M.  After taking the Lemkes home, we get home at 230 A.M.                       Com.  Mother Mary Potter
08.  Monday: Rather surprised to receive letters from Donald and Carl Jungen.  Donald is at his cousins Irvine Kolbeck, 1108 Manila Street Manitowoc and Carl is in Denver Colorado, Zephyr Hotel.  He tells me he is to work for Gates Rubber Co. soon.
09.  Tuesday: Ground is covered with snow this morning.  To Kiwanis luncheon.  Our table Ozzie Witte - Ed Shrank - Charles Behnke - Bart Heiss - Irv Sill and myself.  Ebborn Ziebell presents a talkie movie about Bombay.  Very interesting. Am elected to be a director of Kiwanis for the next two years.
10.  Wednesday: Matt Lauer, sales manager Milwaukee Drug Company has a birthday.  He says five years ago today he was 48.  That makes them as old as myself.
11.  Thursday: Carl Joseph Fretchel is home today, with an honorable discharge from the Marines.  He has been in the service about three years.
12.  Friday: Dropped in at Fretchels today.  Carl is looking good, but states he is somewhat nervous.  A letter from Leo Jungen today.  He is in Co. B, 167 Eng. Bn. Camp McCain Mississippi.
13.  Saturday: Well Mama Potter has a birthday.  Should I say how old? no I’ll say 57 years young, and by the way Fred Karst also has a birthday today.  He is only 70.
14.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns, then to work.  Had early dinner left about 11.45 for St. Nazianz with Thres, Mary Ann, Mrs. Theresa Drexler, Fred and Mrs. Karst. Passed Father Ott about 5 miles from St. Nazianz, hadn't driven 1000 ft. and had a flat tire (rear right).  Father Ott stopped to help me change the tire.  Arrived at St. Nazianz about 145.  Met Father Edward Wagner there.  Donald (son) and boys are fine.  The students present a play “The Masterful Monk.”  It is well presented to a packed house.  Met Fathers Gregory, Vincent, Denis, L___.  After a short visit with the boys we leave for home, get home at 7 Oclock, after a short meal I go back to work, to finish our drug orders. Get back at 9 P.M – find we have company.  Bill and Emma Siewert – Thres Fretchel – Lena Baier.  Thres gets a birthday present.  Annie Weisheipl comes at eleven oclock.  Party breaks up at 130 A.M.
15.  Monday: Attended luncheon, directors Kiwanis Club.

17.  Wednesday: Mrs. Ernestine Dumke our old neighbor at 1208 Minnesota Street is 86 years old today.  Joe Weisheipl Jr. almost became a Marine today.  Marge goes to Great Lakes immediately to bid him farewell, as he is to leave for San Diego Calif. in the morning, but nothing happened and he is still a gob.  Joe and Annie Heip take Thres and self to the Oshkosh tonite.  Two good pictures “The Youngest Profession ” The autograf hunters

19.  Friday: [N] Forty Hours Devotion begins at St. Vincents.
20.  Saturday: Matt Weisheipl is 30 years of age today.  To St. Vincents Church at 530 A.M.         Com. Tony Pable
21.  Sunday: [2M] To 730 Mass at St. Vincents Hi Mass with exposition of the Blessing Sacrament.  Then to work.  This afternoon visited Tony Pable at Sunnyview.  He had more visitors George and Frank Koplitz – Joe Lange – Mr. Ziernzack, Bob Weber –Hans Hable – Carl and Jennie Pable.  Took Rose Weisheipl home this noon dropped in to say hello to Joe and Annie.  They are painting their sitting room.  To work at 5 P.M. to St. Vincents tonite for closing of Forty Hours.  Father Lambert Scanlon has the sermon.                        Com.  Father John Nuernberg
22.  Monday: Little Joe Baier Jr. is 3 years old today.
23.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  Harry Stuhldreher from “University of Wisconsin” is with us today.  I believe he is one of the “four horsemen” from Notre Dame University years ago.  Our table Dr. Gifford, Ed Durler, Ray Baxandall.  We also entertained the High School Squad football players.

25.  Thursday: Thanksgiving Day here is a lot different than a year ago.  Lovely day, we had a 13 #Turkey.  Attended St. Vincents 9 Oclock Mass.  While we were gone Harry Kujawa dropped in and left some venison.  He and family are on their way to Milwaukee.  While we were napping this afternoon Lena Baier dropped in.  We went down to view the remains of Mrs. Kath Robl and then attended the Oshkosh Theatre.  The “Iron Major” stars Pat O’Brien –Ruth Warrick, “Gildersleeve on Broadway” stars Harold Peary – Billie Burke.  Two good pictures.  Had supper at 930 P.M.

28.  Sunday: To St. Johns, Foresters Memorial Service.  Then to work.  Visited Tony Pable at Sunnyview this afternoon.  He is doing nicely.  Joe Grabl and Mrs. Hansetter are out to see him.  Thres – Aunt Annie Heip –Aunt Lena – and Mary go to Stadler’s this afternoon.  George and Alvina are having open house on their golden wedding anniversary.  They are at our house for supper and spend the evening here.  Thres Fretchel is here tonite also.     Com.  Camilla Micko

30.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis Luncheon with Dave Collin.  Our table Ruben Shekey – Frank Sullivan – Ed Ledvina – Dave and I.  Hi school boys and girls entertain us.  Met Harold Arentsen, the music director at the luncheon.
