Diary of Alfred E. Potter December, 1944

01.  Friday: To St. Johns at 7 Oclock.  Got a present from Edwin Marheine today, three pheasants and two ducks.                        Com.  Donald – Mary Ann
02.  Saturday: This is Annie Heip’s birthday.  She has completed 62 years.  Dropped in to see her this noon with a present.  View the remains of Herman Miller at Sitters.  Rosary is said for his repose.  The ducks are very fine.
03.  Sunday: [T] To 730 Mass St. Johns, then to work.  Back again tonight at 545.  We visit with Annie Weisheipl tonite.  I get there at 10 P.M. from work.  Aunt Lena Baier is with us.  Joe works as usual from 8 P.M. on.  We drive home at 1 A.M. in a blizzard.                       Com.  Herman Miller
04.  Monday: Attended funeral services for Herman Miller.  Father Schmitz reads the Mass.  He is getting very feeble.  Almost got stuck in the snow at Sacred Heart Cemetery.  Our car Lena Baier –Annie Weisheipl – Alvina Putzer Thres and myself.
05.  Tuesday: Bill Siewert is moved to a smaller room.  He is now in Room 236.
06.  Wednesday: Visited Bill Siewert this afternoon.  Today is his birthday.  Also viewed the remains of George Mueller.  Met Father John Mueller at the funeral home.               M.O.  George Mueller
07.  Thursday: Mary Ann gets her first train ride today.  Took her and mother along to Milwaukee.  They visited Margaret, Gail, and Anne Drexler while I was downtown on business.  Tommy Adkins and Walter Lange took me to lunch at the Boston Store.  Did business at Yahr Lange, Mc Clurg, Mutual Drug, Bertram Novelties. Took the folks to Riverside Theatre in the evening.
08.  Friday: To 700 Mass at St. Vincents.  Didn’t get much sleep, from 3 A.M. to 630 A.M.  Forty Hours begins at St. Vincents today.

10.  Sunday: To 730 Mass with Holy Name Society.  A fire at Sears – Roebuck Company causes damage over 100 000 dollars.  It began in the rear of the building sometime near 5 Oclock this morning.  Several fireman are hurt.             Com.  Joseph Bloechl
11.  Monday: To Kiwanis Directors meeting, with luncheon at the Athearn.
12.  Tuesday: Two Kiwanis luncheon at the Athearn.  Took Dave Collin.  Our table Glen Fadnar – Harry Bruegger - _____Heyn and myself.
13.  Wednesday: [4M T] Visited Bill Siewert, that is I intended too, but he was not in his room.  Attended meeting of Chamber of Commerce Directors this noon at the Athearn.  This is the 3d luncheon there this week.  Took Thres and Annie Heip to Henderson’s to do some Christmas shopping.
14.  Thursday: Thres is busy baking Christmas cookies today.  Served on a Coroners Jury this morning at the courthouse in the case where W. H. Clausen of Fond du Lac lost his life in a collison with an Olson transport truck on Sept. 12th about 9 P.M., 8 Oclock standard time.  Verdict of the jury, negligence on both sides contributed to the accident.  Jurors: Mike Randall, Leonard Reinke, Paul Wertsch, J. Harold Watson, A.E. Potter, Raymond Miller.
15.  Friday: Norman and Sybelle Brown (Appleton) had an increase in the family yesterday.  It’s a boy – ways 9 # 9 oz and his name – Timothy.

17.  Sunday: To St. Johns 730 Mass, then to work, and its like a mad house at the store.  We attend the "Golden Wedding Anniversary" of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Mueller at the Athearn Hotel.  Altho it is really a preliminary, it is a lovely event.  It is a dinner for the immediate family with Rev. C.J. Lange and Mrs. John Hackbarth, Thres and myself.  Also took a trip to Sunnyview to see Tony Pable.  He is doing fine but can not be home for Christmas.

19.  Tuesday: Joe Baier is laid up this afternoon with tonsilitis. 
20.  Wednesday: Joe Baier became papa again last night at 11.30. A little girl 7# 5 oz. is the Christmas present.  Joe is still laid up.  Today marks the golden wedding anniversary of Will and Minnie Mueller.  The folks from our stores assemble at the house after closing hour.
21.  Thursday: Cards are coming in briskly these days.  Joe Baier is back on the job.

23.  Saturday: This is our busiest day of the year.  Took Jackie Rothe along to deliver presents to the doctors, and to Fathers Bastian, Ott, Courtney also Sisters at St. Vincents and St. Johns.  Sister Genevieve introduced Sister Edgar the new superior, at St. Vincents.  I'm so tired this evening that I could not go back to work, my first evening out this month.
24.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Johns, then to work.  We are quite busy at the store.            Com.  Camilla Micko
25.  Monday: To midnight Mass at St. Vincents Donald serves.  To bed at 230 A.M.  Donald stays with Norman Koelbl over night, they get up at 12.30 P.M.  We visit Bill Siewert at his home.  He must go back to the hospital tomorrow, we then visit at the Weisheipl’s and exchange presents, then over to Ed Fretchels for a visit.  When we get home Harry Kujawa and family are here from Berlin, also Joe Baier – Joe Jr. –Faye and his Mother Lena.  The Kujawa’s have supper with us.  I go to work from 700 to 915.                       Com.  Thanksgiving
26.  Tuesday: [T] Thres and myself attended Kiwanis luncheon.  New officers are installed – of Harry Bruegger Pres. Al Dunham Vice Pres. Earl Matt Secy. – Leigh Hough Treasurer.  Our table Mr. Mrs. Harold Watson –Mr. Mrs. Packer from Whitewater, Thres and self.  Joe Walker entertained.  Visited Emma Baier at Mercy.  She is fine and so is the baby.  Dropped in to see Bill Siewert, he was returned to the hospital this morning.
27.  Wednesday: Father John Nuernberg is in town.  Dropped in at the store.  He is doing fairly well.  He now has some assistance in his parish duties, at St. Anthony’s.  Donald and Mary Ann attend young folks dance at St. Vincents.
28.  Thursday: Took a flying trip to Milwaukee.  Left on Streamliner at 530 in Milwaukee at 700 P.M.  Dr. Ray Wagner is on his way back from Camp Devens, Mass. He told me how easterners make clam-bake. Attended Yahr Lange salemen and manufacturer representatives banquet.  Met many salemen I knew.  Took 1140 train back home.  ON the train I meet Clayton Kuehn, one of our former employees in the Navy, and Les Wolf in the Army from Texas. Both have leave until Tuesday.
29.  Friday: Father Michael Drexler drops in to the store to see me.  He is awaiting his commission as chaplain.
30.   Saturday: [T N] 12-31-44 We have some company tonight but not as many as usual.  Annie Weisheipl – Lena Baier – Ed and Thres Fretschl are here.  This is Thres Fretschl’s first evening away from home since she’s been sick.  She still does not feel any too well.
31.  Sunday: To St. Johns Church 730 Mass then to work.  We are very busy today.  Bill Siewert is home again for the holiday.  He is doing very well, but is somewhat out of sorts because his arm is feeling so slowly.  Well he must be patient.  I work until 9 P.M. and when I come we have company as narrated in error Dec. 30th.                                Com.
