Diary of Alfred E. Potter July, 1945

01.  Sunday: [T] To St. Vincents 730 Mass, then to work.  Father Ott take some of his older altar boys to our cottage for an outing.
02.  Monday: Bill Mauritz and Ray Ostertag are putting a new roof on our cottage.  Their families also enjoy an outing with us.  To Kiwanis Directors meeting this noon.  Al Dunham presides in the absence of Harry Bruegger.  Harold (Doc) Watson is ushered in as our new secretary.  When I get back to the cottage tonite at 10.30.  I find we have 15 people there without myself.  Bill and Ray run short of roofing.  The got the job nearly half completed.  This evening attended meeting with Harry Hirschberg –Dave Collin, Ed Binder –Harold Zweifel,  Reed Haveman
03.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  Prof. Norem Political Knights Teachers spoke.  Alec Bucholt was a guest.  Alec is now in Texas.  Our table Ed Durler – Dave Collin, M.E. Christenson –George Harrington Norman Rehder. Heiss Bakery announce new store hours 730 A.M. to 630 P.M. Fridays to 900 P.M. Sundays 3 to 630 P.M.  What will Laureen do now she kept the place open every night until 10 or 1030 for many years.  Ford Motor Company today began assembly line production of Ford cars at its Rouge plant.  They are authorized to build 40 000 cars.
04.  Wednesday: [T] And this is one Independence Day that we had no company at the cottage.  I worked this morning.  The weather is not any too pleasant.  This afternoon we came back to town and took in the Strand “A Royal Scandal” features Tallulah Bankhead –Charles Coburn – Anne Baxter – Wm Eythe.  Olson and Johnson are featured in “See My Lawyer” The Me Preview Picture is “Boston Blackie’s Rendezvous.” The last two pictures are very comical.  Aunt Lena is with us.  Father Michael Schmitz celebrates his Golden Jubilee.  About 80 priests attend.
05.  Thursday: Thres takes Bill and Right back to the cottage.  Little Joe Baier has to come along with grandma.  I served as pallbearer for Mrs. Berres this morning.  The others Francis Spellman – Jimmy Cain – August Pitz–Bernard Kelly –Bill Lennon.
06.  Friday: The boys complete the roofing job at the cottage today.  It took them longer than they expected it would.  Joe Baier and family also Rays family spend the afternoon and evening at the cottage.
07.  Saturday: Today is Dr. Hugh’s wife’s birthday.
08.  Sunday: [T] Today is Dr. William Wagner and Lillian’s wedding anniversary.  To St. Vincents with Holy Name.
09.  Monday: Rose Weisheipl is taking her vacation this week.
10.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  Our table Dave Collin –Dr. Pfefferkorn – Sid Dorfman.  Abe Kagan almost walked away with my straw hat.  Joe Baier and family spend the afternoon and evening at the cottage.  This is a cold summer indeed, temperatures at Milwaukee purported at 47°.  Bobby Paulick and Beatrice Ratschman are married at Our Lady of Lourdes Marinette by Father Leo Courtney.  Thres and I are Bobby’s baptism sponsors.
11.  Wednesday: Thres attends the Ladies Auxiliary picnic at Wrasse’s cottage.  As usual she bakes a big loaf of home made rye bread for them.  Didn’t get my afternoon out but did quite a bit of work at the cottage after supper.  Cleaned the play room in trimmed around the trees, also moved down a lot of Geffers thistles.  Bill and Emma Siewert came with Thres about 9.30.  Played cards until 2 A.M.
12.  Thursday: Brought Bill and Emma back to town this morning.  Joe Baier and family spend the afternoon and evening at the cottage.
13.  Friday: [T] Joe Baiers wife, is not doing so well these days.  Is either on the verge of a nervous breakdown or is suffering some mental ailment.  Thres Fretchel buys a 64 dollar “Eversharp” pen and pencil set for Leonard who is still overseas.
14.  Saturday: Took in the Oshkosh tonite “Where do we go from here” stars Fred Mac Murray – Joan Leslie – June Haver.  A technicolor and extremely comical.  “Within these Walls” features Thomas Mitchell –Mary Anderson –Edward Ryan.
15.  Sunday: To St. Johns 730 and then to work.  Back to the cottage this evening.  Took Thres Fretchel along.  Aunt Lena is also with us.  Had a long game of cards.  Thres had’nt played for some time
16.  Monday: [T] Leo Girens takes office today as the new chief of the fire department.  He is 41.  I was almost frozen this morning at 6 AM.  I find myself in need of a second blanket.  Temperatures outside are down to 48°.  Rose Weisheipl is back to work, with quite a rash on her arms and legs, aside from best the vacation agreed with her.  “Big Three” Conference is to open today at Potsdam Germany.  Churchhill – Truman – Stalin that is providing Stalin (Uncle Joe) gets there.
17.  Tuesday: Brought Aunt Lena back to town this morning.  She’s somewhat worried about things at home.  To Kiwanis Club.  No program today.  Our boys golf today at Ridgeway.  Our table Carl Schmitt – Mike Dugan – Burt Harris –Bart Heiss and yours truly.  A fire in the Plankinton Arcade, Milwaukee, caused damage estimated at 50 000 yesterday about 615 P.M.  One man was found suffocated in the wash next to the bowling alleys.
18.  Wednesday: Thres has company at the cottage Mary Schneider – Anna Drexler – Jenny Miller –Rose Miller –Kate Duex – Anna Sipple – Anna Weisheipl –Emma Heppler.  Annie Weisheipl stays and of course that meant a card game.  I cut Pete Geffers thistles and then played cards with the ladies until 130 A.M.
19.  Thursday: South Side Business Men and ladies enjoy the afternoon and evening at “Milton Berry Foundation” formally the home of E.C. Fahrney.  Thres went out with Emm and Mayme Siewert.  Bill and I went out with the Joe Frenzls.  Bert Harris showed us around.  It was a worth while visit to this beautiful place.  F.W. and Minnie Mueller came over from their cottage.  After they get back to the cottage more cards until 130 AM.  Paul Kircher, President of Globe Realty Co. passed away this afternoon.
20.  Friday: Boy, Im tired this morning.  These late nights are getting me.  Thres came back to town tonite with Aunt Annie and Aunt Lena.  Chief of Police Joseph Kluchesky Milwaukee resigns his position.
21.  Saturday: [T] Temperature is up to 85° today.
22.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Vincents.  Father Roger Miller, Salvatorian is here well Father Bastian is gone.
23.  Monday: Mayme Tauber passed away about 3 Oclock this afternoon.  She suffered a ball a week ago Saturday, taken to the hospital Thursday, but could not be operated on account of pernicious anemia.  The fall and a water tumor weakened her heart and caused her demise.
24.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  Frank Keefe gives a fine talk.  Our table Ray Ware – Jim Noheltz – Leight Hough and myself.  Bill and Emma Siewert drive out to the cottage today.  Lawrence Kinateder rides out on his bicycle, and the temperature 98° in the shade.  Bill and Lawrence go out fishing and get into a storm, they both are drenched to the skin.  When I came from work I find they are wearing my clothes.  Viewed the remains of Ed Glaesen and got in on part of the prayers by Father Bastian.  Our cottage party broke up at 130 A.M.  Beautiful night            M.O. 25.  Wednesday: About 10° cooler today.  Thres has the Business Mens Auxiliary of the cottage today, 23 ladies are present and have an enjoyable time.  Took Mary to Fiss & Bills this afternoon and Aunt Lena – Thres and Mary Ann tonight to view the remains of Mayme Tauber.  Father Bastian offered the Rosary.                                 2 M.O. 26.  Thursday: Mayme is laid to rest this morning, I was a pallbearer, the others Joe Reichardt – Leo Shubert – Albert Binder – Ed Hein – Ted Demler.  Had a pleasant visit this evening with Father Bastian.  He is getting tired of eating some foods but must have patience until his teeth fit better and the gums become hardened.            Stanislaus Jarosch – Katherine Holzbauer – Pancratius – Mary – Frank – Joe –Theodore – John Drexler – Matt and Josepha Baier  (10 M.O.)

29.   Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Johns.  Then to work.  Left at one oclock for Milwaukee with Thres and Mary Ann.  On arrival visited the Drexlers, Anna –Margaret – Leona –Romy is gone fishing.  Took the folks to dinner at Fitz Gust’s.  They all enjoyed it even Baby Gail.  Got a room at the Plankinton (521) House.  At night took in the Alhambra.
30.  Monday: [T] Out early to work, stopped at Mutual –then at McClurgs sad “hello” to Mr. Grace over the phone.  He is home with a large carbuncle on his head.  Picked up Thres and Mary and at the hotel, had luncheon at Fritz Gust, then back to McClurgs while the ladies do shopping then to Yahr Lange.  Walter Lange waits me also Paul Heiden.  Started for Romy and Lovie’s place picked up Anna Drexler and Baby Gail, and then for Berlin.  It poured most of the way.  Its almost 100 miles from Milwaukee to Berlin.  The Kujawas are surprised at their company.  After lunch drove home and more rain.  And I’m very tired.
31.  Tuesday: Another busy day, to work at West Store.  To Kiwanis luncheon Ray Baxandall and myself chair a small table.  After lunch and picked up Rose and Teddy Gittings from Chicago at C & N. W. depot.  Its three years since they were in Oshkosh.  Thres takes them along to the cottage.  In the evening I attend a meeting Kiwanis Committee for underprivileged children at the Milton Berry Foundation.  Our committee Bert Harris –Sam Luchsinger – Ed Durler – Dr. Nordhoof and myself.  Gene Vogel could not attend.  Took Aunt Lena along to the cottage tonite arrived at 11.20 P.M.  If up until 2 AM.
