Diary of Alfred E. Potter June, 1945

01.  Friday: Did not sleep much last night, Thunderstorms and Fire truck sirens kept me awake.  The storms last most of the day and also this evening.  Much rain falls at least 4 inches and many basements are flooded.  To St. Vincents at 7 Oclock.                   Com.  Donald – Mary Ann
02.  Saturday: It is still raining today.  Took Thres and Mary Ann to view the remains of Lawrence Gunz.  This afternoon I attended his funeral service.  Rev. Anderson officiated.  Pallbearers Ed and Urban Marheine –Dick Lutz – Bob – Byron and Paul Gunz.  Tonite Took Thres and Mary Ann to Oshkosh.  Betty Grable and Dick Haymes star in “Billy Rose’s Diamond Horseshoe” in technicolor.  “Circumstantial Evidence stars Michael O’Shea and Lloyd Nolan.
03.  Sunday: to St. Vincents 730.  It is a High Mass celebrated by Father Leo Ott, with Corpus Christi Procession after the Mass.  Also Christian Mothers Communion Sunday.  This evening Thres takes in Sacred Heart Childrens Play.  Thres drives taking along Mary Ann – Thres Fretschl – Aunt Lena – and picked up Annie Weisheipl.            Com.
04.  Monday: [T] Ed Fretschl is here to trim our shrubbery.  This is a job he intended to do last fall.  To Kiwanis Directors luncheon this noon.  Thres takes in Christian Mothers Meeting at St. Vincents tonite. 
05.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon, Earl Clemens gives a talk on the beauties of the Fox –Wisconsin hiway, which is being recommended to be built.  Our table Ed Schrank – Carl Knobla –Ed Olson – myself.  We are crowded into the French room at the Athearn today.  Thres is on committee for Ladies Cath. Order Foresters tonite at St. Vincents.  She also wins a prize of baking chocolate.
06.  Wednesday: I relieve Norbert Mueller at the West Store mornings from today on.  Worked at South store this P.M. and to Chamber of Commerce Directors meeting at 6 P.M. lasted until 9 P.M. then back to work at South.
07.  Thursday: Jane Mueller and Leona Luft are on duty with me this morning at West.  This evening took Thres – Marianne – Dolores Kinateder to Strand “Maryland” in technicolor stars John Payne –Charles Ruggles – Walter Brennan –Fay Bainter – Brenda Joyce.  “Seventh Heaven” features Jimmy Stewart – Simon Simone – Jean Hersholt.  Donald plays with Hi School Orchestra tonight for Students Graduation.  Tony Pable is released from Sunnyview today and is allowed to go to his home and be with his family.
08.  Friday: Cleo Vogt White is on with me this morning at West.  During the 3 mornings I have been there I have not had one call from a doctor.

13.  Wednesday: Took a drive to the cottage this afternoon at 230 with Aunt Lena Baier, Mary Ann and Thres.  I cut down the hay in the back of the cottage and hauled it away.  Am very tired after this job.  After a few games of sheephead we drive home at 11.15 P.M. Aunt Lena and Mary Ann are lucky.

15.  Friday: Had a letter of acceptance from Father Gerold today.
16.  Saturday: This is Jane Mueller’s birthday, she is 24.
17.  Sunday: [T] To 730 Mass at St. Mary’s.  The local Colombian Squires and their Dads receive Holy Communion in a body.  This afternoon to the Legion Club House where the South Side Business Men have their picnic.  Bill – Emma and Mayme Siewert are with us.  After the picnic we play cards at our house until 12.30.                  Com.  Stanislaus Jarosch
18.  Monday: News comes over the radio that Lt. Gen. Simon Bolivar Buckner commander of the U.S. 10th army was killed instantly on Okinawa.  Born July 18 – 1886 near Munfordville Kentucky.  He is the 22nd general (Am) officer to be killed in the European and Japanese wars.  The Kujawas are with us again tonite, after Agnes has had another treatment.  They staid until 11.30 P.M.  Johnny is to receive his first Holy Communion next Sunday.
19.  Tuesday: Two Kiwanis Club with Dave Collin.  Ray Miller puts on a stunt program for us.  Our table Dave Collin – Lawrence Buck and myself.  Lt. Col. Herbert Smith, a guest, told us about the famed 32nd Division in the South West Pacific Campaign.  Smith said the 32nd had more combat days (active) in the current war than any other division in the U.S.A.  Thres –Marianne –Aunt Lena move out to the cottage this afternoon.  Father Leo Schiffler dropped in for short visit this afternoon.
20.  Wednesday: [T] Emma Baier (Mrs. Jos.) has a birthday.  She is 30 years of age.  The Brands are painting their cottage.  They all paint Bob – Mrs. – and Barbara.
21.  Thursday: Summer makes entry as a lovely day, and the temperature is about 80°.  Our Plymouth is getting a sprain overhauling.
22.  Friday: Work seems to be piling up, didn’t get finished with it until 11.30 P.M.
23.  Saturday: This is my busy day.  After working at South and West Stores this morning, drive to the cottage cleaned out boathouse, had to do quite a bit of digging to get the back door open, burned up rubbish, in the evening back to work at South Store.  Temperature around 88° in the shade.
24.  Sunday: [N] To 730 Mass St. John.  Have not attended there for some time, then to work.  Another hot day, temperature 87°but a heavy afternoon shower brought the temperature down.  Took Thres and Mary Ann to the (cottage) Oshkosh Theatre tonite “Having Wonderful Crime” stars Pat O’Brien – George Murphy –Carol Landis.  “Bells of Rosarita” stars Roy Rogers –George “Gabby” Hayes.
25.  Monday: Jane Mueller and Vivian Miller take their vacations this week.
26.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  Dave Collin could not attend.  I understand he is going out of business, his store building will be taken over by Kroger Stores.  Our table Frank Steckbauer –Karl Knobla – Bob Stoegbauer home on furlough is our guest, and Dr. Christensen.
27.  Wednesday: Joseph Kronzer passed away this morning at his home.  Had been ill about a year.  Born April 16 – 1876 at Mt. Calvary.  Operated nine food shops in Oshkosh.  He came to Oshkosh in 1915, worked for Henry Bartels meat market lived on 10th Street a few doors east of Oregon street near our South Side Store.  I worked most of the day.  Brought the folks to town this evening to see “The Song of Bernadette” featuring Jennifer Jones and William Eythe also “Rhythm Roundup” starring Hoosier Hotshots, The Pied Pipers.
28.  Thursday: Alois Mugerauer and Frank Mathe put our dock in at the cottage.  They also got a few good sized fish this afternoon.
29.  Friday: View the remains of Joe Kronzer at Fiss and Bills.  Met Father Felician O.F.C.A.P. from Detroit.  Archie Gifford is operated at Mercy Hospital today.                      M.O. (2) Joe Kronzer
30.  Saturday: Father Joseph (Salvatorian) is at St. Vincents to help out over Sunday. Potatoes are scarce these days. Many food shops have none at all others allow only five pounds per family.
