1945: "Took Ralph Sperry along to Kiwanis luncheon today. Our table Frank Labudde, Gene Vogel, Archie Gifford, John Bangert, Howard Godshall, Ralph Sperry and myself. This evening took Rose Weisheipl and Naomi Mueller to the posrt office for a conference about the new type of money orders to be issued February 1st in denominations from one cent to ten dollars. Harry Wussow showed the ladies thru the post office after the meeting. Stopped at Court Tavern on the way home and treated Rose and Naomi. Temperature is 5° below this morning." [from A. E. 1942: "Eddie Weisheipl's day off. Art, Norbert Mueller, Fred Baumgartner and myself meet at the South Side Store tonight to determine the policies of the company for the ensuing year. Meeting lasts until midnight, but I do not get to bed until 3:30 A.M. Tuesday. The first contingent of American troops, several thousand men, arrive in Northern Ireland. 1933: "This is a "Red Letter Day" for Oshkosh. The City National Bank did not open this morning and that started a run on all the other Oshkosh banks. The people just crowded into them all day and drew their savings. It was terrible. It looks however that the Security Bank, The First National, and The New American will weather the storm. Visited Anna Drexler this morning. Their dog is sick. Had a meeting with Mr. Mueller about closing the West Side Store. Rothenbach Shoe Store is the scene of a fire this noon about one o'clock. Frank R. and Jordan Demler were testing a gasolline stove when it exploded and set the back end of the store on fire. 1943: "Had basketball practice after school. The snow is over our hips in some places. At 5:30 we started a octave celebration for the octave of "St. Peter's Chair at Rome." It is a seven day octave. We say a few prayers for the Pope and sing 2 songs. And we also have Benediction with our regular rosary. Samer had the saloon on the corner, living quarters in the rear. Temperature is up to 43° tonite with colder weather predicted. Worked 58 1/2 hours this week. Boyd Jordan has a birthday. 1933: "Councilmen Jim Skole, Frank Haidlinger, John Rasmussen were in this afternoon to get an ad or ads for the 'Free Press.' Federal men made a big haul on Jackson and New York Ave. last night. Seven hundred gallons of alcohol, one new truck and trailer, another truck and an escort auto. Men held are Adolph Siebold, Oshkosh; Sam Weiner, New London and Earl Blink, New London. 1953: "A beautiful day. Met Julius Sandstedt this morning and went over the plans for our new store. He will also check the building for any repairs it may need. To Kiwanis luncheon Leo Lania, war correspondent who interviewed Hitler and later denounced by Hitler as a Nazi foe, spent 2 1/2 years in various prisons including Dachau and Buchenwald was our speaker, and a very good one. Had a visit with Gordon Hough, manager of The Penny Co. He congratulates on our new venture. Marge Haverty is over to get her schedule from Art Mueller, it proves to be unsatisfactory. [from A. E. 1934: "Dr. E. Forrest Bickel passed away this morning at 5:32 at Mercy Hospital. Born Feb. 9, 1878 in the Susquehanna Valley, Pa. Came to Oshkosh in 1914 purchased the practice of the late Dr. Adolph Roos, and also his home at 65 Otter St. Bill Steude (furrier) lost his wife Florence this morning at 2 o'clock. She as born Nov. 1, 1899. She was a twin sister to Mrs. Roman Baranowski. Married to Bill May 20, 1930. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gottfried Widmer. 1937: "I keep deliver(ing) most of the day, even made a trip to Mrs. Hayden at Doemel's Point. Roads are very slippery, it rains and freezes on the windshield. Lower temperatures tonight. Louis Gutsmiedl passed away yesterday afternoon at 1:30 at his home 1025 4th St. Born in Germany Dec. 14 1871. He was a tailor and worked for my father about 1903. Just getting ready to pick up Donald (son) to go to the meeting when we get a call that Uncle Joe passed away at 7:15. Thres and myself drive out immediately. Fahter Bunkelman is reciting prayers for the dead. We stay until 11 o'clock to help cheer Annie up. She is holding up quite well. 1942: "After two hours of sleep I attend six o'clock Mass at St. John's, then down to the store to open up for the day. The New Year is ushered in with a heavy blizzard, in fact, so bad no taxis are running. Most amusement places are closed. I took off a few hours this afternoon for a little rest. In the evening had Bob Heideman take Naomi Mueller home and go to the post office for me. Eddie and Rose Weisheipl are off today." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
