Diary of Alfred E. Potter April, 1934

01.  Sunday: Easter Sunday.  Attended 10 30 Mass at Saint Vincent’s.  Some Work.  Took Mary –Thres and the Heips to see Will Rogers in “David Harum” also Marie Dresser – Mary O’ Brien and                    .  In the evening Will and Emma Siewert were over.  Well we just had lots of fun – 6 handed sheephead, and most of the folks paid me.  Didn’t look much like Easter Sunday, it rained also.
02.  Monday: An early phone call this morning from the Sisters of Sacred Heart means a trip to Manitowoc.  Took Sisters Kathleen – Ludilla – and Henrietta and Sister Joletta’s Nurse.  Sister Joletta is quite improved from pleuropneumonia.  And what a trip it was.  Detours on Route 31 are in terrible condition, and the roads are covered with water in some places a foot or more deep.  Visited Sisters Clara and DeSales at Manitowoc.  Also Otto Berndt and Walter Gerbinski.  Home at 7.15 P.M.  Thres to the Dance at Roseleaf Club Hall, Plenty of fun and Beer.  Got home at 2.15 A.M. pretty tired, and its still raining.
03.  Tuesday: Well I’m not working so fast today.  Lee Conroy is over to get our insurance adjusted.  And still it rains and pours and storms and thunders.  Were guests at the Kiwanis Party at the Greenville Grange Hall this evening.  They had a swell the beat and a nice program.  Prof. Breese led the singing and Prof. Ashur Hobson spoke on the Agricultural Adjustment Program.

08.  Sunday: Work today until 6 P.M.  Attended 10.30 Mass, met Bill Mauritz and took him home.  In the evening took Sisters Ambrosia – Romana – Maximila and Valeria to St. Mary’s at Menasha.  Visited Mr. Stilp at the Stilp and Hedberg store.  Norman Brown is back on this territory.  He was in this afternoon with Sybella (Plank) Brown.  They make two good lovebirds.
09.  Monday: The temperature goes over this 70° mark today.  It sure feels good to have warm weather.  Took a drive to Green Bay today with Mrs. Bock on the job in the evening.  Had our monthly meeting at the store which lasted till midnight.  A few beers at Frank’s then over to the Walkathon to pick up Thres and Anna Heip.  Staid till 2 A.M.
10.  Tuesday: Brrr!  What a change, its cold this morning.  And our fire is out.  Yesterday I thought spring was here to stay, but I’ve changed my mind.  Margaret Drexler is over with some of her troubles.  Attended the Movie “Wonder Bar” at the Strand.  Al Jolson, Kay Frances, Delores Del Rio, Ricardo Cortez, Dick Powell and Hal Le Roy are the stars.  And we saw Al go to heaven on a Missouri Mule.  And also the folks on the Fiji Islands and New Guinea.  Well a lot of them are still Cannibals.  And after the show I had to start of a wire, get to bed at 2.30 A.M.
11.  Wednesday:
12.  Thursday: Well I am sorta tired this morning but don’t feel bad at all.  I must work and there’s no time for loafing.  In the evening took in South Side Business Man’s Card Party.  Played with Bill and Emma Siewert and it was some game of sheephead.  We played 32 hands bill and Emma 25 – Thres and myself 26, a very unusual score.
13.  Friday:
14.  Saturday: Heinie Embs gets too familiar at Frank Norkofski’s Tavern.  He draws one year probation and the six month’s jail sentence over his head in he doesn’t make good.  65 dollars were missing and a few bottles of liquor.  He takes Harry Walsh out for good time.
15.  Sunday: 7 30 Mass this morning then took Ed Fretchel out to the cottage for his first day of work out there.  Then on the job at the store until 2 30 P M.  Took a little nap and then out to the cottage to get an Ed up.  Louis Heintz had been out to look over his old cottage of.  I think he gets lonesome at times.  Then back to the store until 8.30 P.M.  Visited John Drexler but Pan is out and John is bowling at Green Bay.  Then over to Saint Vincent’s Keno Party.  I won a pound of coffee and a pound of lard and that’s all for today
16.  Monday: Nice morning.
17.  Tuesday:
18.  Wednesday: Dr. Burton Clark Sr.  Died this morning at 3.50 at Mercy Hospital.  Born October 8 – 1869 in the town of Aurora in Waushara County.  He was a prominent Surgeon well known throughout Wisconsin.  Dr. Clark and the late Dr. C.  W.  Oviatt years ago conducted “Maple Grove Sanitarium” on Jackson Street outside the city limits.  D. C. Adams passed away late last night at Mercy Hospital.  Born July 15 – 1909.  Her dad Albert Adam died 12 years ago.  Our one cent sale begins this morning.
19.  Thursday: Our Dickie Bird gets a pal today.  Our neighbor Mr. Tulledge brings over their female and now we’ll see what will happen.
20.  Friday: The ladies are busy cleaning house, even if the weather is somewhat cold, and tonite we have snow. Attended the operetta Pickles by the St. Peter's High School students. Edward Weisheipl and Constance Heinzl take part and so does Joe Henkel. Joe Weisheipl Jr. furnishes the music.
21.  Saturday: Well, the snowed did last over night.  Prayer Books and Rosaries are selling these days.  Our One Cent Sale ends tonite, it is not a success.
22.  Sunday: First Holy Communion at St. Vincent's this morning. It is not very pleasant weather. I work in the morning and in the evening. Slept most of the afternoon. After work played Keno at Sacred Heart, and won a tea kettle, 4# of lard, and 5# of sugar.
23.  Monday:
24.  Tuesday: when Took a drive to Milwaukee tonight with Syl Bludau and Bill Welch.  Stopped at Wauwatosa at Bludau’s home.  He has a beautiful place.  Donald and Sylvia were home too.  Attended Drug Meeting at the Elk’s Club in Milwaukee.  After the meeting stopped at the Blatz Hotel where Bill Welch of is made president of the Oshkosh Overall Company?  That was a fun.  Syl took us to Sailor Ann’s place on Florida St.  Left for home at 2. A.M. I was good for halfway.  Syl drove to Fond du Lac and Bill of Oshkosh.  Arrived home at 4.30 A.M. and the day is dawning.
25.  Wednesday: Didn’t go to work this morning, and Larry Gerdes is waiting for me.  Worked this afternoon and rested some or this evening.  Thres, Mary and Anna Heip go to the Walkathon.  I went there after 11 P.M. and staid until 1 A.M.  Five couples are left.
26.  Thursday: Mr. and Mrs. F.  W.  Mueller go north for a few days, no doubt to the Thien cottage.  Syl Bludau is here again and he hasn't forgotten Tuesday night.
27.  Friday: Art Mueller is pa again.  It is almost a boy at least Art expected one.  The weather is turning warm.
28.  Saturday: This is one breezy day, the weather is moderating.  Ann Baier is laid up with an infected tooth.
29.  Sunday: Went to 6 Oclock Mass this morning. This is rather early for me. Took Ed Fretchel out to the cottage, then back to work. Took Thres and Ed's wife out in the afternoon, and then back to work for the evening.
30.  Monday: It looks as if the warm weather is going to stay.  I worked until 8.30 and then we took in the “Walkathon” and stayed until 130 AM and was my bones sore from sitting so long!
