Diary of Alfred E. Potter January, 1934

01.  Monday: Starting the new year right by staying home.  This makes my second day in but I don’t notice much difference in my cold.  Bill and Emma Siewert dropped in this afternoon.  Bill looks tired, I think he must have celebrated last night.
02.  Tuesday:
03.  Wednesday: 381 marriages in Oshkosh in 1932 - 469 in 1933.  Business is getting better.
04.  Thursday: Well I have a nice job this morning, getting excused from jury duty, and Judge McDonald didn’t like it either, but he finally excused me.
05.  Friday: Nice day, my cold is getting better, and getting a shot of vaccine every day, had my third one today, but my arm hurts.  Kate Kriz is over for a visit.
06.  Saturday: Frank Schneider “Clerk of Courts” lost his mother this morning at 1 15.  She was born at 83 Waugoo Street August 6 – 1854, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Heilig.  Got shot number 4 from Dr. Kleinschmidt today.  I don’t feel so good yet.  Mrs. Pauline Sebauer, mother of Emma Sebauer Nigl passed away this afternoon at 4.30.  Born on Oct. 14 – 1851 in Germany.
07.  Sunday: No sunshine today.  Attended 10.30 Service this morning.  Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Mueller are over for a visit this afternoon
08.  Monday:
09.  Tuesday: Up to Milwaukee to the Druggist Service Meeting at the Athletic Club.  Well it was a very successful meeting lasted until 11.45 P.M.  I even got my robbers.  Left Milwaukee at 12 home at 1.25 A.M.  I heard the Baiers, Matt and Lena and Anna were here tonite for a visit.
10.  Wednesday: Dr. E. Forrest Bickel passed away this morning at 5:32 at Mercy Hospital.  Born Feb. 9, 1878 in the Susquehanna Valley, Pa.  Came to Oshkosh in 1914 purchased the practice of the late Dr. Adolph Roos, and also his home at 65 Otter St.  Bill Steude (furrier) lost his wife Florence this morning at 2 o'clock.  She as born Nov. 1, 1899.  She was a twin sister to Mrs. Roman Baranowski.  Married to Bill May 20, 1930.  She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gottfried Widmer.  Henry Hughes presides as judge for the first time this morning.  Attended Annual Audit of Books at St. Vincent's.
11.  Thursday: They are selling out Fred and Minnie Rothe’s furniture and belongings.  When it seems rather sad that they both had to pass away within a year.  Earl Fuhs is laid up today.  Was over to see him this noon.  His throat is so badly swollen it nearly closed, but for the timely call of Dr. Hugo.
12.  Friday: My cold is getting better, I’d hit six shots of catarrhal vaccine.  Joel Heip and Mrs. go to Madison today.  Took Thres of the first time since she broke her arm.  We visited at Joe Heips I had to get the lowdown on some of the new state legislation.  Took Mary along also.  They still have their Christmas Tree up.
13.  Saturday: Not a very pleasant day, at times it rains, at times it snows.
14.  Sunday: 10.30 Mass this morning, dinner and then to work for the afternoon.  In the evening took Thres to Keno party while I worked at the store until 9.30 then to the Keno party with Heip at St. Vincent's.  I won a blanket, and pen & pencil set; Thres won a ham.
15.  Monday: The sun is coming out today, we must be to for some nice weather.  Got into quite a party at Len Michels tonight, he is celebrating his 59th birthday.  Mayor Oaks is there, and also Frank Labudde Frank Schneider, Hugo Rees, John Clune, Harry Pokrandt, Otto Stegbauer, Ed Wolf, Joe Poklasny, Orville Hando, Emil Lemke, Alfred Berger, Gratian Schneider, John Stockinger, Tony Serwas, Otto Ilk, Joe Hemmer, Joe Baier, myself and a few others. The Schnitzelbank went over big. Fred Karst and Matt Michels were also there. Bernard Petersen is laid up. Rose Drexler is called to work today at the Court House.
16.  Tuesday: Still working on inventory.  Joe Baier and Joe Hemmer are over tonite after work for a bowl game of sheephead.
17.  Wednesday: Took Lena Baier – Thres and Mary out to Rose Mauritz for a visit.  Its a pleasant day.  Any Heip is there also.  That means the four sisters have a little visit.

21.  Sunday: Took Thres to church first time in new year.  She hasn’t then since Dec. 9th.  Worked during the afternoon and part of the evening, then attended the Keno Party at Sacred Heart and won nothing.  Joe Heip won 4 pounds of lard and Rose one a dollar bill.  Saw “Dinner at Eight” at the Oshkosh with a Star Cast John & Lionel Barrymore – Billy Burke, Mary Dressler, – Wallace Beery –
22.  Monday:
23.  Tuesday: Took in Chicken Supper at Saint Marys, took Annie Heip along.  Thres won a smoking stand and at Keeno, Annie won nothing.
24.  Wednesday: Frank Norkofski gets the son-in-law.  Lucille is married this morning.  Clark Hastings is here on his farewell trip for Abbott today.  He is transferred to Minneapolis.  Mike and Herman are back on the air today WBBM.  Visited Anna Drexler for a little while this afternoon.  Took some pictures of the bride and groom at Norkofski’s.  Visited Bill and Emma Siewert tonite.
25.  Thursday: To Milwaukee today another meeting of the Directors of the Druggist Service Bureau.
26.  Friday: Took luggage to the boy scout shack for the boys, in troop 18.
27.  Saturday: Earl Fuhs is back on the job this morning.  Bill Mauritz has a birthday.  He is 30 years of age.
28.  Sunday: Lena Baier has a birthday I think she is 57.  It is getting to be very cold this afternoon and a sharp wind blowing from the Northwest.  Visited Anna Drexler and the Girls and also Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Paulick Sr.  Mrs. Paulick is quite a storyteller.
29.  Monday: 15° below zero this morning with a high wind.
30.  Tuesday: Took a trip to Milwaukee with Sam Taub.  Had lunch at Mader’s German Restaurant.  Visited Milwaukee Drug Co, met Jack Schneider, George Moehle The Strong’s.  Visited Charles Felker at the Plus a Hotel.  Had a short visit at Henry Ruenzel’s store on Vliet Street.

31.  Wednesday: Visited Ed Fretchel and the family tonight.  Met Mr. and Mrs. Henry Beck.  President Roosevelt today revalued the gold dollar to 59.06 per cent of its former weight.  The new gold dollar will contain 155.21 grams of gold nine – tenths fine.
