Diary of Alfred E. Potter August, 1933

05.  Saturday: Fred Beell Marshfield Policemen were shot and killed at the office of Marshfield Brewing Company this morning.  Beell was 57 years old and at one time world’s middleweight wrestling champion.
06.  Sunday: 7.30 Mass, mixed choir is a, then to work.  Took Ed and the children up to the cottage then more work.  In the afternoon drove two Mount Mary and picked up Sisters Maximilian Erminhilda and then to Saint Michaels and was surprised by Sister Linus, then to Mother House and to Saint Peter and Saint Paul’s on Murray Avenue to pick up Sister Serena, then back home and out to the cottage to bring Ed back.  F. W.  Mueller and Mrs. leave for Escanaba this morning for Kiwanis Convention.
07.  Monday: Drove again to Mount Mary, took along Anna Heip and had a nice visit with Sister Genrose. She showed us thru the Mount Mary College, then to Drug Service Bureau. Dinner at Athletic Club and a short meeting, then to the Eagles Club for a Druggist Meeting on the National Code. Meeting lasted until 12.30 A.M. then to the Eagles Palm Garden until 2.15 A.M. then home, arrived at 4 A.M. Forgot to mention that we met Janet Gaynor the actress in a tavern in Slinger.
08.  Tuesday: Up at the usual time, but not much sleep.  Took a drive to John’s Burke this evening.  The C K’s had a program at Hilts Hall.  John Callahan is there with his “National Quartette” and they are funny.  Dancing after the program.  The Heips were with us.  Met Aloys and Kindermann and Mrs. there.

10.  Thursday: Mrs. Sarah Williamson, Oshkosh Resident celebrates her 100th Birthday today.
11.  Friday: F. W.  Mueller is back from Escanaba and Copper Harbor.
12.  Saturday:
13.  Sunday: 7:30 Mass then took Ed and his family to the cottage. Work until 12:30 P.M. then for a good snooze until 4 P.M. then to cemetery with Mary. Made quite a number of visits. Back to work until 7 P.M. then out to the cottage until midnight.
14.  Monday: Oshkosh's 80th birthday is being celebrated with a big Homecoming Celebration.
15.  Tuesday: Assumption Day.  To Mass at 7A.M. then to work for the day.
16.  Wednesday: Oscar Rasmussen passed away last night at his home 1468 Some Park Avenue at 6 Oclock.  He was sickly for 12 years.  Born January 1st 1882.  He was a former supervisor in the 13th ward.
17.  Thursday: This is a big day for the homecoming celebration. Governor Schmedeman is here. Attended reception for the Governor at the legion club house at noon and also the banquet in his honor at the Raulf Hotel in the evening. Ryan Duffy Senator, and Congressman Michael Riley were there also. Virginia Keefe, Homecoming Queen gets a hundred dollar check. The parade in the afternoon is very beautiful but a sudden storm puts the floats out of commission and routes the crowds watching. It hailed in some parts of town. It lasted about 15 or 20 minutes but did plenty of damage.
18.  Friday: Ralph Hartley, 400 Algoma Blvd. lost his father, Charles Hartley, last night.  He was 72 years of age.
19.  Saturday: Took a drive with Mr. Mueller to John Patterson’s cottage at Clark’s Point, but John was out fishing.  Had quite a chat with Mrs. Patterson.  On the way home picked up Mass Mona Dokka of Stevens Point.  She wrecked her car about 2 miles out of Oshkosh.  She knows Palmer Taylor too.  Dropped in to Shemmerhorn’s and picked up a few melons.  Charles V. Nevins, principal of the Jefferson School since 1902 passed away suddenly last night at his home 321 15th St.  He was born April 23 – 1870 in Aztalan Jefferson County.  He was my principal when I attended the 3d ward school.
20.  Sunday: 7:30 Mass with Male Choir then to work until 3 P.M. Then to Waverly Beach near Appleton where the State Picnic of Musicians is being held. They have about the largest dance hall I've seen. Back home at 8:45, then to the Strand to see Marie Dressler and Wallace Beery, Robert Young and Maureen O'Sullivan in Tug Boat Annie. After the show to John Bauer's Gemütlichkeit Tavern in Joe Nigl's old stand.
21.  Monday: Rev. Gregory J. Putzer celebrated his first Solemn High Mass yesterday at Sacred Heart Church.  He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Putzer 1218 Fifth St.  He was graduated from the Salvatorian College in Rome and has joined that religious Order.
22.  Tuesday: Moved to the cottage this afternoon.  Saint Vincent Athletic Board meets tonight at 745.

26.  Saturday: Margaret (Mrs. Art Mueller) is not feeling so well today.
27.  Sunday: 730 Mass as usual Then Took Ed Fretchel family to the cottage, then work until 6 P.M.  Had quite a visit with R. J. Grady this afternoon.  He was in a bad auto accident two weeks ago, his face is scarred quite badly.  Joe and Anna Heip are out in the evening.  Had a surprise visit from Leo Kern, Claire Hochhaus and Leo’s daughter Rosalind this evening.  They made about 500 miles today, and are tired.  They are staying with us at the cottage for the night.  I almost forgot to mention that Margaret Drexler begins at her vacation at the cottage tonite.
28.  Monday: Yesterday was Yvonne Mueller’s birthday, she is 10 years old.  The assessed valuation of Oshkosh has dropped $10501150.  Last year’s valuation was $57008150, this year’s $46507000.
29.  Tuesday: A busy day getting around. Drive to Appleton this morning to see Norman Brown and Sybella Plank get married by Father Gaudentius at St. Joseph's Church. I believe this is the first wedding that Fr. Gaudentius performed in 10 or eleven years. Took Anna Drexler and daughter Agnes to the cottage. Anna surprised us all.
30.  Wednesday: Lots of company today.  Took out Mrs. Matt Baier and Mrs. William Mauritz to the cottage this morning, Joe Baier and Ann this noon and Bill Mauritz and Joe Hemmer this evening.  It seemed good to have the old bunch together for a change.  Margaret Drexler’s vacation is cut short today.  I had to bring her back to town, as she is called back to work.  Mary Jungwirth is laid up.  Marg. Voelz has a birthday.  She is 23.

31.  Thursday: A nice warm day.  Brought in Anna Drexler from the cottage this afternoon.
