Diary of Alfred E. Potter November, 1933

01.  Wednesday: All Saints Day and it's another nice day.  Took Sisters Ambrosia, Maximillian, Serena, and Genrose to Berlin this afternoon.  Visited Fred and Margaret (Blogger's note: Kujawa, cousins) for a while.  Bought quite an assortment of holiday goods from Mr. Grace today.  Oshkosh City Lines Inc. a new bus concern begins business in Oshkosh today.
02.  Thursday: Today.  Had an unexpected call from Frank McCarthy and John Patterson to go to Wisconsin Rapids to visit some of the Druggist there.  Whitrock, Deny-Dale, and others.  Call two Sister Veronica on the phone but she’s in Milwaukee.  Got home at 1.40 A.M.
03.  Friday: Plenty of work today.
04.  Saturday: well I’m on for birthday today, 43 years old, but feel like 23.  Took Joe and Anna Heip out for real feed tonight.  We, each had a whole duck (wild) and was that delicious.  After the dinner we took in the Strand Theatre, Mae West and Cary Grant in “I’m No Angel.”
05.  Sunday: 730 Mass as usual, then to work, worked until 630 P M.  Then a visit to the Bazaar at St. Josaphat’s Church.  I didn’t win but Mary Drexler won twice, then to Sacred Heart Keeno Party where I had two wins.  A short visit at Joe Koecks, also one at Joe Heip’s and then for home.
06.  Monday: This being the first Monday we have our monthly meeting at the South Side Store.  Prizes are awarded Lawrence Churchill first, Irma Jewett, second, Bern Peterson, Third, Naomi Mueller Fourth, Margaret Voelz Fifth.  The meeting was a very good turnout by all of our employees.  Harvey Rhyner, a classmate of mine, passed away tonite at 8 O clock.  He was born June 3, 1891.  We had many a good time together when we were boys.
07.  Tuesday:
08.  Wednesday: To Milwaukee this afternoon with Mr. Mueller.  At the Drug Service Convention Display in the Sky Room at the Plankinton Hotel.  Met a lot of the Fellows we knew.  Grid – Iron Dinner in the evening.  It was good.  Secretary of the State Theodore Dammau was guest of honor.  Drove home after Midnight hit the ditch outside of Menominee Falls no harm done, helped a fellow out later and my car was hit by a garage man from St. Lawrence.  Found the man we helped out was Mr. G R Hendricks 1514 So. 59th Court Cicero Ill.  He is a druggist and was on the way to Green Bay to Father Land funeral.  I got home at 4 A.M.
09.  Thursday: Attended Kiwanis Jollies tonight, they went over big.  Ed Worm & Mrs. – Mr. & Mrs. Fred Schlintz were here to see it.  After the show party at the Athearn, lasted until 2 A.M.
10.  Friday: Sacred Heart “40 hour” begins today.  F.W. Mueller is not feeling so well this morning.  It is getting wintry 13° above zero.
11.  Saturday: Woke up this morning to find about 3 to 4 inches snow on the ground.
12.  Sunday: 7.30 Mass, then to work until 3 P.M.  Took in the show at the Oshkosh.
13.  Monday: Thres has a birthday, but not a very loud one. She is 47.  Rev. John Nuernberg dropped in with Ann for short visit at the store.  F.W. is back on the job, and feeling better.  He was quite exhausted from pushing cars out of the ditch last Thursday morning.
14.  Tuesday: Lots of snow this morning.  Driving to Milwaukee with Ed Marheine and Matt Mertz.  Very interesting meeting, Boy Scout Executives of Region 7 meet at the Hotel Pfister.  Heard the sad news that Fred Rothe passed away this morning.  Found lying on his back in his room.  Born April 20 – 1879.  St. Mary’s Bazaar is on.
15.  Wednesday:
16.  Thursday: Did some bowl and tonite the first in three weeks.  Won one game by 3 points, lost another by 1 point, Some competition.  Bold 100 – 147 – 115.  Took in St. Mary’s Bazaar after 9 P M.  Thres won 25 #Sugar, I won nothing.  Anna Heip won at table on my money, Mrs. Rich Andrashko a combination Lamp and Clock on my money.  Almost forgot about this morning’s temperature but cold is this season, 2° below zero.
17.  Friday: Fred Rothe is laid to rest this afternoon.  Had a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Rich Donian after the funeral.  President Roosevelt recognizes Soviet Russia as of 11.50 P.M. last night.  William Bullit will be Ambassador for the U.S.A. Maxim Lidvinoff was the Russian Envoy.  Russia has not been recognized by the U.S.A. since 1917.
18.  Saturday: The Farm Strike is ended tonight at least temporarily.  It has done much harm to Wisconsin Farmers.  It has caused them to lose their out – of – state markets which may mean a loss of at least two million dollars.  Mrs. Ida Menzel wife of Sim Menzel passed away at 1 oclock this afternoon.  Born May 29 – 1878.  Frank Miller 1206 – 9th St.  Passed away at 4.45 this morning.  He was a brother to Joe – Louis – John all deceased, and also Mrs. Will Siewert – Mrs. John Kellerman – Mrs. Charles Frank – also Clara Miller.  He was born Feb 21 – 1881.

21.  Tuesday: Attended funeral Services for Frank Miller this morning.  It was very impressive special services at the grave.  Had Ed Schmalz take us to Milwaukee, I had to stop with the package for Sister Melora.  Attended meeting of the Rexall Club of Milwaukee at Hotel Ambassador.  Glen Beyers was there also Bill Webbles.  Then another meeting of the Drug Service Bureau Directorate well that lasted from 5.30 to 10.30 and I sure did lots of sitting today.  Took the North Shore from Milwaukee at 12 midnight and left for Chicago arriving there at 2.20 in the morning.
22.  Wednesday: (Chicago) Up at 9 A.M. took a taxi out to United Drug Co. met Mr. Storm, then over to Albert Pick to see Al Selbach, after lunch over to McKesson Fuller Morrisson.  Bought a few things, had a nice visit with Leo Lanagan, met Al Billup and Norm Brown.  Had Al Leonard over to the hotel in the evening.  Had dinner at the Oriental Gardens, met Cork Weisheipl, Dan Russo, Heck Herbert Paul Wittenmeyer.  In the evening visited the Bier Stube at the “Bismarck Hotel,” sang some German songs, and drank a lot of beer.  One of the waiters told me he liked to wait on Alice Roosevelt Longworth years ago.
23.  Thursday: Over to “Marshall Fields” this morning.  Well, there displays have been better.  Took train home this afternoon, landed in Oshkosh 6.55 P.M.  Heip and Anna were over to spend the evening.
24.  Friday: Back on the job.
25.  Saturday: Joe Baier had bad luck tonite.  When driving over town after work, his car is hit on the corner of Ceape and State Streets.  He is radiator is dented in, left fender and headlights smashed, steering wheel is broken.  Joe is not hurt badly.  He did get quite a scratch on his nose.
26.  Sunday: Lots of work today.  Had rose and Margaret Drexler over to do type a writing for me.  Attended St. Vincent’s Play “Plain Sister” in the evening.  Margaret Nuernberg is the Plain Sister, Mandy Wolf has to do the dirty act and she does it well.  Glen Koplitz is the comedian and he’s good.  Joe Heip’s orchestra played.  After the show more work until 11.30 P.M.

29.  Wednesday: It is not very pleasant of today, a heavy fog hovers over us.  Took a drive with Thres this afternoon and my car looked as tho I had driven thru some bad mud roads.

30.  Thanksgiving Day turns out to be a very nice mild day. Male choir sings at 8 o'clock Mass, this is new to us.  We have much to be thankful for.  Worked a short time, took a drive to the cottage in the afternoon, then to the Oshkosh Theatre.  Ed Brendel is there in “Ole's Big Moment” then for supper and out to Sacred Heart Bazaar.  I won a chicken.
