Diary of Alfred E. Potter June, 1934

01.  Friday: Took Ed Fretchel and Thres down to see their daughter Sr. Linus at St. Michaels Milwaukee.  I visited at M. D. Co. and Drug Service Bureau.  Met Kenny Childs and Ralph Kraft.  It is very hot day about 105° in the shade.
02.  Saturday: Governor James Rolph of California passed away this afternoon at the Santa Clara county ranch.  He was born Aug. 23 – 1869 in San Francisco’s Mission District.  He was the 28th Governor of California and Mayor of San Francisco 19 years.
03.  Sunday: Attended 730 Mass then took Ed out to the cottage. Sang with the mixed choir at the 10.30 outdoor Mass sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. The Fox River Valley is celebrating the Tercentenary of the coming of the white man to Wisconsin. It was an impressive occasion, the Fourth Degree Knights in official regalia also the Boy Scouts were there in uniform.
04.  Monday: Joe Weisheipl’s Father is quite ill.  He is semiconscious most of the time.  We visited him tonite, but he does not recognize us.
05.  Tuesday: Another blistering hot day.  Attended the meeting of the committee to revise the constitution and by-laws of the Wisconsin Pharmaceutical Association.  Otto Berndt, John Demgen, Ed Schweger, Ed Worm, Ralph Clark and myself constituted the committee.  We met at the Conway Hotel Appleton, visited Fred Schlintz.  Sister Veronica is in town and I am her chauffeur.  She accompanied one of her Sisters to the hospital.  Dr. Norman Kleinschmidt gives my teeth the once over.
06.  Wednesday: The hot spell is broken and we find the temperature of 58° this morning.
07.  Thursday: And other cool day, but its rather welcome.  The ladies of “Sheep Head Club” “Fortnight Jollies” have their outing at our cottage.  In the evening the husbands also came and we all had a good time.  Mrs. Procknow won most of the prizes.  Joe Cater and Dick Doman are getting to be bean bag specialists and also Paul Procknow.

09.  Saturday:
10.  Sunday: Sang at 730 Hi Mass with mixed choir. Then work until 2 P.M. Took Louis and Mary Mauritz and Margaret Drexler to Milwaukee. Sister Melora is still teaching at Holy Cross. The congregation is quite large between 600 and 700 families. The Paladine Fathers are the pastors. They also have a few novices for their order at this place. They intend to build soon and have more students. Met Sister Rosewin, the Superior at the school. Had a visit with Karl Radomsky, Margaret's beau. Sponged a sandwich at the Knickerbocker Hotel.
11.  Monday: Took Sisters Sacred Heart to Manitowoc.  Had a visit with Otto Berndt.  It is a fairly nice day, altho we run into a shower of rain occasionally.  Took Sister Julitta back to Oshkosh, then for a short time at the store.  Then to the St. Vincent’s Childrens Play and then to our monthly drug meeting of the Mueller Potter.
12.  Tuesday: Plenty of work today.  Attended executive scout meeting this afternoon.
13.  Wednesday: Joe Hemmer has a birthday.  He is 29.  Mrs. Potter is not so well today.  She has an aggravated case of dysentery.
14.  Thursday: Thres is still feeling badly.  Took Ed Fretchel and Mrs. to the cottage tonite.  We tried the boat motor and OH how it smoked and kicked.  It finally stopped and we couldn’t start it again.
15.  Friday: Took Joe and Anna Heip to the Cottage.  Joe’s Dad is somewhat better.

17.  Sunday: Sang 730 Mass, took Ed out to the cottage, then back to work.  Took Mrs. Fretchel (Thres) along in the afternoon.  Had company too Harry and Agnes Kujawa, Mrs. Ted Drexler and Margaret and Leona.  Harry fixed the boat motor.  Had a wonderful rain in the evening.  It lasted well nigh unto midnight and did a lot of good.
18.  Monday: St. Vincent's graduates spend the day at our cottage. They are chaperoned by Fathers Bastian & Haen, & Sister Ambrosia. Attended the meeting of the Executive Board of the Wisconsin Pharmaceutical Association at Fond du Lac this evening. Dropped in to see Cap Ruggles after the meeting. John Demgen was my pardner.
19.  Tuesday: Drug Convention opens in Fond du Lac. It is a real business convention with lots of fun at night. Mrs. Ed Worm is celebrating her birthday and how! It's a Wow! Arrived home at 3.30 A.M.  Being chairman of the committee revising the constitution and bylaws I had to present this for first reading. Had lunch at the Kiwanis Club with Ed Worm and John Demgen.
20.  Wednesday: Appointed Chairman of the nominating committee, I had to present my report this morning.  And what a job that was.  Nobody wants to be President, but two would like to be Secretary.  I had lunch with Ralph Hayes, Al Hart, Syl Bludau, Ed Worm.  Another big night, President’s Ball etc.  Arrived home at 4 A.M.
21.  Thursday: Staid home during the day and attended the Banquet in the evening.  Listen to Mr. Breeze – Humorist he’s clever.  Many prizes are given.  Met John and Mrs. Huber, Denny Schiffeveden, and Many others. The Verifine Ice Cream party was a wow.  Mrs. Ed Lange run away from the bunch maybe the party got too rough. Syl Dretzken is our new President, I think Ed Schweger is Vice Pres. and Jennings Murphy is Secretary.  Arrived home at 4:00 AM.  Picked up a Miss Sorensen at Fond du Lac.  She lives above 7th and Oregon St.s, and was glad to ride with us.  And the Convention is over.
22.  Friday: Back on the job.  Takes a little time to get started.  Harry and Mame Erbes are married 25 years today.
23.  Saturday: Had a mission to perform today which I did not like very well. Had to inform Ed Plashko and Bernard Peterson of an indefinite leave July 1st. It really hurt me to do it, but it just couldn't be helped. Dick Dorman had an accident last night. Bumped his head on a glass door in the dark and cut his nose quite badly. Dr. Ebert had to sew it for him.
24.  Sunday: Sang at 730 Hi Mass.  Then out to the cottage to find one of my Martin Houses down.  Back to work till 3 P.M. we had lots of company at the cottage.  The Siewerts entertained at a farewell party for their nephew E. Siewert Bathke.  They all had a fine time and its a nice day too.
25.  Monday: The Boy Scout Executive Committee entertains the Boy Scout Masters and Assistants at a banquet at the Athearn. Joe Hemmer is cheerleader and what a leader.  Clyde Spring-gate spoke as usual. After the banquet Joe and I drop in to see Len Michels and then it rained and then it poured and then I couldn't get my car started and then we had to take a taxi home. What an ending for a perfect day.
26.  Tuesday: Took 3 Sisters to Elm Grove this morning.  My car did stop after an all night’s rest on So. Park Ave. near the St. Vincent’s Church.  Picked up a drug order at Milwaukee, met Kenny Childs and sponged a few beers.  The streetcars in Milwaukee our wealth screened and why, because there’s a strike on.  Joe Heip and Mrs. are over for some cards and they both lost a little.  They left at 1.30 A.M.  The double birthday at Fretchel’s today, Leonard is 14 – of Robert is 7.
27.  Wednesday: Took Ed Fretchel’s Family and Joe Hemmer to the cottage for the day.  In the evening took Heip and Ann to Waukau and Omro.  At Waukau stopped at Patty’s Place and at Omro at Geo. Herrick’s.  Had a chicken Lunch at George’s and how Sisterinlaw Mary enjoyed that.  From there back to the cottage for some sheephead.
28.  Thursday: This is going to be a hot day.
29.  Friday: Another hot day.  Bill and Emma Siewert celebrate their Silver Wedding Anniversary.  Well, we went over with the Heips and had a good time.  Played cards outside and it was fun.  Mrs. Ray Siewert is quite a singer etc.  Almost forgot that Mrs. and self took a drive this afternoon.
30.  Saturday: Two Oshkosh people were drowned last night.  Alvin Koch 398 Dove St., dove into shallow water at the old Prautch Quarry and his head was split on a rock ledge.  He was born Jan. 11 – 1910 and was 24 years old.  John Stackle 397 Elmwood Avenue 49 years old was drowned near Leonard’s Point this morning between 3 and 330.
