Diary of Alfred E. Potter May, 1933

01.  Monday: Father Bastian is over early this morning to bring communion to mother. This is a cold rainy day. Attended American Legion Stag Party after work tonite. They had 392 paid admissions and served small beers for a dime. [Blogger's note: I believe he is referring to his adoptive mother who was Katherine Jarosch and later Katherine Holzbauer.]
02.  Tuesday: Today is the 80th anniversary of the founding of the First Wisconsin National Bank of Milwaukee in 1853. It was organized as the Farmers and Millers Bank. Another tornado in Louisiana took 54 lives yesterday.
03.  Wednesday: Beer brewed in Wisconsin after September 1st, 1933 must be brewed with a barley content not less than 75%. This is passed by the Senate. Took a drive today to see Dr. Carter. He talks somewhat encouraging. Louis Kossel passed away last night at his home 408 9th St. Born Feb 12, 1866 in Nekimi. We used to patronize him for ice, milk, and eggs when we camped on his farm near the sand pit (Cook & Brown's) some 20 years ago. He was a brother to Mrs. Alvina Hauert, our former landlady.
04.  Thursday: Nice morning but cold.  George Scattergood from Whitall Tatum is over this morning.  I gave him a fairly nice order.  George had quite an experience last night was some card slickers who got 65 dollars of his money.  But George caught them at it and they returned his money.
05.  Friday:
06.  Saturday: Ray Ostertag and George Lang fell into the Federal Net for bootleggers yesterday. They are caught loading alcohol into a truck on a farm near the Fond du Lac airport. Tony Karias, the farmer, and his son were also arrested. Over 3000 gallons of alcohol were found by the Federal Agents.
07.  Sunday: Sang Concone's Mass with mixed choir this morning. Took a drive to visit Herman Holtz and to Omro to see Bob Spaedtke. He married Theresa Drexler on 9th Street some years back. Met Mr. Maher, he wants to be postmaster at Omro. Work in the evening; over to Heips after 10:30 P.M. Homeward bound 12:30 A.M. and it's raining very hard.
08.  Monday: Ran all day today.  A big fire at Ellsworth main lays waste 210075 business houses and residences.  About 300 to 400 people are left homeless.  Mrs. Johanna Kempinger 73 passed away yesterday afternoon at the home of her daughter Mrs. Wm. Hoeppner.  She was born in Austria August 19 – 1859.  She was the mother of Mrs. Joe Seibold and Mrs. Joe Womaski.
09.  Tuesday: The bootleggers are back from Milwaukee.  Clara Gable has a birthday.  According to information John Beerntsen, Dorothy Nigl and Martha Moore are hurt in an auto accident near Manitowoc yesterday morning.  John’s car is badly damaged.  The girls are not seriously hurt but John lost some of his teeth.
10.  Wednesday: Rain all day.
11.  Thursday: Rain all day.  Took Joe Grable and Clara to Menasha this afternoon.  They are looking for jobs.  Dropped in to See Schmalz at Appleton.  Business is quiet there also.  Rev. F. L. Smith passed away last night.  Born in Ripon December 21 - 1859.  We sold him photo supplies for quite a number of years.  Mrs. Smith died January 20 – 1933.
12.  Friday: More Rain and Mist.  A Statewide Milk Strike begins at midnight tonite.  Tornadoes in Kentucky kill 33 and in Tennessee 34

14.  Sunday: Mothers Day: Sang at 7.30 Mass.  It turns out to be a nice day.  Worked all day.  Took Ed out to the cottage.  He did all lot of cleaning up.  Took Ed’s wife out there in the evening about 10.30.  The Heips come along and so did Al Samer.
15.  Monday: Cara Nome demonstration begins at our Main Street Store today.  It is in charge of Mae Doran.  Mr. F. W. Mueller goes to Waukesha this afternoon to take mud baths and rest for a week or so.
16.  Tuesday: Had to go to Milwaukee this noon.  Drove down with Ed Schmalz from Appleton.  Meeting of the D. S. Bureau at 2 PM.  Met a good many Milwaukee druggists and also others.  When I arrived home I found I had some callers Fathers Leo Sharp and Andrew Quella.  Father sharp is still in Chicago.
17.  Wednesday: Mrs. Neidhammer is here again to conduct her cooking school at the Opera House. We also are on her program this time.
18.  Thursday: Drove to Madison today to meet with Oscar Rennebohm, Ralph Clark, and Eddie Hylan in regard to membership campaign for Wisconsin Pharm. Association. Oscar has quite a warehouse out on West Washington Street.

21.  Sunday: Aloys Metzen’s Birthday today, he is 20 years of age.  730 Mass as usual, and then took Ed out to the cottage.  I worked cutting dandelions for 2 hours and got a healthy sunburn.  Worked in the afternoon at the store and had good business.
22.  Monday: Knights of Columbus convention opens this morning. Raulf Hotel is the headquarters. Hi Mass at St. Peter's church at 9 o'clock.
23.  Tuesday: The Supreme Court at Madison rules that the Aldermanic Form of government wins in Oshkosh. Mayor Oaks called a meeting for 2 o'clock this afternoon.
24.  Wednesday: F W. Mueller back from the Moor baths.
25.  Thursday: Matt Baier’s birthday, he is 57.  Joseph Rankel 88 father of John Rankel passed away this afternoon.  Born in Bavaria August 13 – 1844. Was Mary Mauritz’s Grandfather.
26.  Friday: Harold Mueller's birthday; he is 37 and the boys help him celebrate. Took some of the pupils and Sister Ambrosia to Green Bay this afternoon. Loretta Kempinger, Connie Heinzl, Agnew Schroeder and Catherine Ackerman are the graduates in my car.
27.  Saturday: World Fair “A Century of Progress” opens at Chicago today.  Matt Duen and Kate celebrate their silver wedding anniversary today.  Poppy Day in Oshkosh today.  The United States is going on to the Gold Standard by statute according to President Roosevelt.
28.  Sunday: 730 Mass as usual, took Ed Fretchel to the cottage, and joined him in the afternoon.  Took along Anna and Joel Heip and Mrs. Fretchel.  Cleaned windows, put on the screens and played some terrible sheephead at night.
29.  Monday: Some rain and more of it tonight.  Had a little meeting with Ray Novotny, Assemblyman, and Joe Weisheipl.  Took Joe in to see Father Bastian.  Carl Fretchel leads this afternoon for Fort Sheridan.
30.  Tuesday: Memorial Day.  Somewhat cloudy this morning.  Took John and Mrs. Drexler and Betty to West Allis to see their sister Clara.  She stays at a very nice apartment at 7415 West Greenfield Ave.  Met her forelady Miss Walsh and her beau Florian Kojes.  Had a pleasant stay and took the folks around Milwaukee.
 Wednesday: Learn this morning that Ed Fretchel wanted to go to the cottage yesterday, and very badly too.  Well he’ll have to go some other time.
