Diary of Alfred E. Potter May, 1934

01.  Tuesday: Joe Weisheipl Sr. is 50 years old today. We drop in to see him about 10 P.M. and his folks are having a surprise party on him. Well Joe sure was surprised and enjoyed it immensely. Well we get home at 1 A.M.
02.  Wednesday: Rev. Frank Schoettl is in to say when Hello this morning.
03.  Thursday: Joseph Kronzer Sr.  Is the new President of the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce.
04.  Friday: Took a drive this afternoon with Thres.  The weather is pleasant.  Did not return to work this evening.  I went to Mercy Hospital to visit John Schoettl and find him very low.  He is conscious and recognizes people, but his heart is hardening and he is not expected to live 24 hours.  Joe and Anna Heip are over two or place for a game of cards until 1 A.M.  Temperature 88° at 1 oclock this afternoon.  William H Woodin Secy. of the Treasury of the U.S.A.  Passed away last night of throat infection, would have been 66 May 27th.
05.  Saturday: Frank Weisheipl’s wife has a birthday.  She is 30 and we go to Omro to George Herrick’s Place for a little celebration.  We tried the “Gemütlichkeit” Tavern on the way home.  We pulled in about 1 A.M. John Schoettl passed away this morning about 10 A.M.  He was born Feb. 2 – 1860 in Neugebau Austria.
06.  Sunday: Took Ed to the cottage, then to work, then to 10.30 Mass then more work till 6 P.M.  Over to John Schoettl’s in the evening.  Met Father Schoettl, he’s looking very well, but was much surprised that his father should die so suddenly.  Took Ed and Thres Fretchel to the cottage about 9 P.M. and then sheephead was the game until 1 A.M.  We have an unusually warm day today 93° in the shade.
07.  Monday: Joe Heip leaves for Shawano this morning.  Ann Baier is back to work after a nine day layoff from an infected tooth.
08.  Tuesday: Attended the funeral services for John Schoettl this morning.  Rev. Vic Kandy – Rev. John Nuerenberg – Rev.  James Hogan – Monsignor Rice – Rev. Michael Schmitz were all present.
09.  Wednesday: We are in for more hot weather and much of wind.  It is 96° in the shade.  Took Anna Heip – Thres Fretchel and Thres to the cottage to clean.  Well, it’s so windy, but it doesn’t do much good.  Took Sister Bonita and Sr.      to Green Bay this afternoon and brought back Sister Ambrosia.
10.  Thursday: It looks very hazy out this morning.
11.  Friday: I am back as a janitor again.  The temperature is 36°only 60° difference between today and Wednesday.

13.  Sunday: A nice day.  Worked at the store until 2.30 P.M. and then out to the cottage with Joe and Anna Heip.  Cut the grass out there and it was a job.
14.  Monday: Charles Woita 508 Wisc. Ave. was hit by an auto at the north edge of the Fairgrounds at 10.15 Saturday night and died yesterday morning at 9 oclock.  Charlie was born in Germany June 25 – 1886.  He used to live on 10th Street and was a brother to Mrs. Otto Zilz, Mrs. Frank Fauck, Mrs. Harold Apel and Al Woita.
15.  Tuesday: Off with the Rexall Convention with Mr. Mueller this morning.

19.  Saturday: The Stock Yards in Chicago are on fire.  The loss no doubt will run into millions.
20.  Sunday: Attended 7:30 Mass then to work until noon. Confirmation at St. Vincent's in the afternoon. About 100 were confirmed. then back again to work for the evening. Thres and Anna went to St. Mary's Keno Party. Heip and I almost forgot to call for them. Picked them up at 10.45 P.M. and then home for a few hands of sheephead. It was some hot during the afternoon 94° at 4 o'clock, 60° at 530. What a change.
21.  Monday: Plenty of work as usual on Monday.  The Chicago Stock Yards fire caused the damage of over 8 000 000 dollars.
22.  Tuesday: Opal Neidhammer get the cooking school started at the Opera House.  F.  W.  Mueller is laid up with a cold.  Ed Worm comes up to see me and I go down to see him but we don’t find each other.  We almost met at Cap. Ruggles.  Cap went camping for a few days to Red Banks.
23.  Wednesday: This is a big day for traveling men at the store.  I can’t wait on all that called.
24.  Thursday: Mrs. Adolph Wiener is laid to rest this morning.  Had some unexpected company at about 1:00 this morning.  Bradshaw – Art Mueller – Joe Baier –Joe Hemmer – Ed Fretchel.  Well they nearly broke down my front door.  They were feeling good, and stayed until 2 Oclock, and I understand they got home at 430 A.M.
25.  Friday: Charles Raug’s mother Mrs. Frances Raug passed away at the home of the daughter Mrs. P.  J.  Sullivan at Wauwatosa, yesterday.  Born in Germany April 3 – 1854.  Married in 1873 to Herman Raug.
26.  Saturday:
27.  Sunday: Holy Name Rally at Antigo.  Next years rally will be in Oshkosh.

29.  Tuesday:
30.  Wednesday: Memorial Day.  I get up at 11.30 A.M.  After breakfast – dinner took a drive to the cemetery with Joe and Ann Heip and Mary Drexler.  From there out to the cottage the rest of the day.  Mrs. Louis Schoenick was hurt, when a car driven by her father-in-law Fred Schoenick overturned on the road from Omro to West Bloomfield.
31.  Thursday: Pope Pius is 77 years of age today.  Al Mathieu (photographer) lost his mother this morning at the 4.30 A.M.  She was born in Saint Gregaire Canada December 19 – 1864.
