Diary of Alfred E. Potter June, 1933

01.  Thursday: Herman Derksen father of Oscar and Ernst Derksen passed away this morning.  Born at Kleve Holland February 15 - 1844.  He was President of the Derksen Cigar Company and believed to be the oldest active businessman in Oshkosh.
02.  Friday:
03.  Saturday: Took a drive to Ripon this evening.  Stopped at Dietrich’s store.  He is at a new location.  Has been there for 5 weeks and is quite busy.
04.  Sunday: Sang 7.30 Mass with mixed choir this morning.  Took Ed out to the cottage.  In the afternoon took Mrs. out and then over to Heips to see Marion, she made her solemn communion this morning at Sacred Heart.  After supper took the Heips out to the country and we had a terrible storm after the intense heat during the day.  It hailed and rained plenty.
05.  Monday: Another hot day, but also a little rain.  It is 88° in the shade.  In Chicago it is 93°.  Mr. Murphy is here from Milwaukee, to get numbers for the Wisconsin Pharmaceutical Association.  In the evening attended the children’s entertainment at Saint Vincent’s.  It was interesting.  The Graduating Girls gave a playlet called “The Rainbow Kimonas” Loretta Kempinger, Constance Heinzl and Catherine Ackerman took leading parts.
06.  Tuesday: All again with Mr. Jen. Murphy no luck this morning.  Left for Milwaukee at 11.30 this morning for Directors Meeting of the Druggist Service Bureau.  It’s a hot drive about 90° in the shade.
07.  Wednesday: we are in the midst of a heat wave.  It is 100° in Chicago 95° in Milwaukee and 94°in Oshkosh.  A piece of pavement on County Trunk E near Eureka blew up today because of the heat.  R. L. Clark an Oshkosh Attorney passed away this morning at Mercy Hospital.  Born January 31-1872 at Saint Joseph Missouri.
08.  Thursday: Had quite a crew at the cottage today Ed Fretchel Sr. and Jr.  Matt, Edward, Marion, Rose, George, Joe Sr. and Jr. Weisheipl Billy Bridge and Mrs. Fretchel and it’s still plenty hot.  Had a puncture in one of the back tires of my car.  The first in about two years.  D. A. V. (Disabled Veterans) open their convention here today.
09.  Friday: Ann Baier’s Birthday today, she is 26.  Had quite a severe storm yesterday afternoon.  It was mostly wind and did much damage in the vicinity of Marshfield.  One woman Mrs. H Blumquist 73 died from injuries in a Marshfield hospital.  She was hurled against a foundation wall of a barn on her farm.
10.  Saturday: It is still very hot 94° in the shade.
11.  Sunday: 7.30 Mass as usual took Ed out to the cottage.  Worked the rest of the day.  First Communion Day at Saint Vincent’s.  Confirmation at Saint Peter’s.  Had quite a squall this morning and the temperature changes to cool.  Took Mrs. Fretchel along to the cottage in the evening.
12.  Monday: Ann Baier takes their vacation this week.  Temperature is down to 54° today.
13.  Tuesday Joe Hemauer has a birthday today; he is 28. Took St. Vincent's graduates out to the cottage. There are 16 of them and Sisters Ambrosia and Valeria. The graduates are Catherine Ackerman, Donald Botz, Helen and Vincent Galassia, Constance Heinzl, Gregory Ilk, Joseph Jungen, Loretta Lang, Eugene Karst, John Kellermann, Leonard Mathe, Helene Nigl, Jane Noe, Florence Ostertag, Florence Reichenberger, and Agnes Schroeder. Temperature is not bad during the day, but turns to 42° during the night.
14.  Wednesday: the Huge Dirigible “Macon” passed over Oshkosh last night at 1130 but most of us missed seeing it.

18.  Sunday:  Took Ed to the cottage this morning. 7:30 service lasted nearly two hours this morning. Corpus Christi Procession followed the Mass. In the evening Mrs. Joe Weisheipl, Anna and Margaret Drexler are at the cottage. Margaret looks and acts very lonesome. Joe Heip leaves for Chicago. The corner stone for the new Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church on Nebraska and Ninth Streets is laid today. Rev. Schuster is the pastor.
19.  Monday: More heat.  Mrs. took her small sheephead club to the cottage.  In the evening the husbands also were there. Mr. Mrs. Ed Baranowski, Mr. Mrs. Al Barsch and Mr. Mrs. Joe Cater. Took Sisters Bonita, Hermanhilda two Berlin this morning.  Dropped in to visit Harry Kujawa at the State Bank, met Mr. Wawrszyniak and Mr. Peck.  Bought some of the famous Berlin sausage, while there.  The Sisters at St. Stanislaus in Berlin have a beautiful Rock Garden, Altar and Grottos.
20.  Tuesday: 94° and Arthur monitor this noon, however the highest point reached is 97°.  This is plenty hot.  Drove out to the cottage after work and stayed overnite.  Woke up at 1.30 A.M. to find a lot of bugs and insects in the kitchen.

22.  Thursday: Alfred E Smith receives a “Doctor of Laws” Degree at Harvard today.

25.  Sunday: 7:30 Mass as usual. Then to work. Took a drive to the cottage with Ed and Thres Fretchel in the afternoon. Ed and I fished, caught 45 perch, some fairly good sized ones
26.  Monday:
27.  Tuesday: Off for the Drug Convention at Green Lake this morning.  First Meeting opened at 10.30 A.M. I gave my report at 11 A.M.  There were not many members present for the first meeting.  Was also appointed on a nominating committee by Oscar Rennebohm.  Won 2 prizes “3 Bonzol 3 Zonites Ointment.” And it was very hot but everyone made the best of it.  Traveling Men’s show in the evening.  Joe and Anna Heip came over for the evening.  It was 100° in the shade in Oshkosh.
28.  Wednesday: Attended Charles Francs funeral this morning.  It was conducted by Father Haen, probably his first.
29.  Thursday: Almost took another trip to Green Lake this afternoon but it rained and I'm not feeling so extra. Helped Jim Hemmer with our boy scout card party in the evening at Koplitz Hall. We had a good attendance and cleared 20 dollars. I played 500 with Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. Edwin and Mrs. Emil Ristow. Francis Genal and Angie Boettcher are married at St. Vincent's this morning.
30.  Friday: A sad event occurred this morning. Mother [Mrs. Katherine Holzbauer] had a bad spell and passed away at 7:05 A.M. She had an easy death however and did not suffer. She passed away in her chair. Was 72 having been born in Jandelsbrun Bavaria Aug. 11, 1860
