Diary of Alfred E. Potter July, 1933

01.  Saturday: William Sutton – Gustor Voelz’s husband passed away suddenly this morning near noon.  We have a new city clerk in Oshkosh today.  Mr. James C. Chase succeeds Miss Emma Hebel, resigned.  Miss Hebel was city clerk for six years and deputy city clerk for six years.
02.  Sunday: Had many visitors today.  The people surely have been kind to us these days.  The House is packed with friends this evening.  Father Nuernberg came over to offer prayers. The Knights of Columbus came in a body, Father Bastian leading in prayer.  Rufus C Brown, celebrates his 85th birthday today.  Born at Belvidere Ill. July 2 -1848.  John Whitty is suspended this morning by Chief George Revland, from the fire dept.
03.  Monday: Mother is laid to rest.  Solemn Requiem with Father Bastian, Nuernberg and Haen.  Pallbearers F.  W.  Mueller, Ed Baranowski, M.  C.  Mertz, John Drexler, Matt Baier, Joe Weisheipl.
04.  Tuesday: It is a very quiet about the house and lonesome.  We all miss mother.  Took a drive to the cottage, took Ed Fretchel and his family along, the Heips also came.  Joe and I fished awhile this afternoon.  They’re biting pretty good, Sunfish and Perch.
05.  Wednesday: Rev. Frank Schoettl dropped in to see me this morning and that is a surprise.

09.  Sunday: Took Leona & Margaret along to the cottage this morning.  Margaret only in the afternoon.  Had company in the evening Joe and Anna Heip, Fred and May Schneider.  I fished this afternoon and did not get one bite or nibble.

13.  Thursday: Another hot day.  Took a drive with Mr. and Mrs. F.  W.  Mueller to Plymouth and also to Sheboygan, stopped for dinner at Walter Bade’s Drug Store and Candle Glo Tea Room.
14.  Friday: Been up during the night, very much stomach distress.  Having some rain, and the dry spell is broken.
15.  Saturday: F. W.  Mueller leaves for Lancaster today.
16.  Sunday: Busy day. 7:30 Mass with male choir. Then to the Sisters of St. Vincent's to take Sisters Victor, Rosalind, and Engelmar to Elm Grove. Stopped at Mount Mary College, had luncheon, met Sister Giradus, Madison; Sister Mary William, Marshfield. At Elm Grove met Sister Linus and had a very pleasant visit with Sister Davidica. She is 78 and does not look it. She is still active. Had a visit with Sister Ermanfrieda. She is a nurse at Elm Grove. Sister Genrose, Ermanhilda, Maximilla, and Serena are at summer school at Mount Mary. Stopped at Claire Hochhaus 7845 Harwood Wauwatosa, but she is not at home. Milwaukee is gaily decorated for the Elks National and State Conventions.  Arrived home tired at 8:30 after an hour delay at Fond du Lac. Fan belt on my car broke and had to be replaced. Took a drive to the cottage after a late supper. Joe Heip and Ed are at the Dramatics Club and Anna and Thres Fretchel are worrying. But why? Joe and Ed are sober. Played cards until 1 A.M. Then home, picked up Mary a 1:30 A.M. at Anna Drexler's."
17.  Monday: Beautiful day. Heip and self visit John Drexler for a change. Ted Zuelke is over after work. He is ready to fold up, so he says. Margaret and Rose Drexler are here when I get home. After a treat they feel fine.
18.  Tuesday: Can’t assert my car this morning, but Harvey Plashko is handy with a crank.  Mrs. Potter has a sore throat.  F.  W.  Is back from Lancaster.
19.  Wednesday: Salesman plenty of these days.  Sister Veronica is in town.  Had a short visit with her this morning.  35 years ago today Matt Baier’s father, Joseph Baier is killed by a stone’s throw blast at Lutz Stone Quarry.  Spent the evening at the cottage without company.
20.  Thursday: Cork Weisheipl is back in town and the family moves out to the cottage.  Spend the evening of the cottage with the Heips.  Joe Sr. brought down some Walter Bros. Beer from Menasha and Anna is still learning to play sheephead.
21.  Friday: Art Mueller is laid up today. Drove to Green Bay today with Tod Behlendorf and got rid of my old Chrysler. I hated to give it up. Had it for 6 years and what a lot of history it has piled up during that time. Drove it about 63,000 miles and mostly pleasure miles at that. My new car is a Chrysler Eight, with all the new fandangles on it, automatic clutch, free wheeling, etc.
22.  Saturday:
23.  Sunday: 730 Mass as usual.  Took Fretchel Family to cottage, then back to work.  In the afternoon took Margaret and Mary along for drive.  Landed at Berlin, admired a beautiful rock garden and Grottos at St. Stanislaus Church, and stayed with a picnic, played Bingo and won ham and a can of beans.  Met Father Studer, he invited us to come again.  John A.  Franz 1712 Iowa St. passed away this morning at Mercy Hospital at 10 Oclock.  Born July 22 - 1860

30.  Sunday: 7:30 Mass as usual. It is another hot day. Florian Kojes and Clara Drexler his wife? are here from West Allis and the John Drexler children and the Otillie Drexler s, Matt and his girl Manda Wolf, Florian's sister and Spanbauer, the student move out to the cottage for the day and have quite a time. I work until 6 P.M. then also out to the cottage with the Heips. Monika Mauritz is professed in Milwaukee today. Our Scout Troop #18 leaves for Twin Lakes today, Henry Ford is 70 years of age today.

31.  Monday: Yesterday was a real summer day; the thermometer went to 98°.  A. W. Armstrong is given one year at Waupun and $1000 fine for issuing worthless checks. He gave us a bad one for 5 dollars. I took this up with his wife and find he has two small children. I did not have the heart to prosecute him.
