Diary of Alfred E. Potter September, 1934

01.  Saturday: Mrs. Barbara Poklasny died this morning at 2.15 at her daughters Mrs. Mary Beck.  Born in Austria March 14 – 1854.  Survived by 5 daughters and 3 sons.  Sister Medultha of St. Paul is a daughter, sons are John, Joe and George.
02.  Sunday: Abel Morgan lost his wife Muriel this morning.  She was sick but a week.  She was employed as a nurse by Dr. Haubrick for years.
03.  Monday: Mr. Mueller is back this afternoon from an extended trip East. Mr. and Mrs. John Hackbarth were with them. He has a new fender on his car. Met with a mishap in Boston. This is Labor Day and it rains and pours most of the day. Donald unbeknownst to me hid in the back of my car and had quite a time getting out at the store during the downpour.
04.  Tuesday:
05.  Wednesday: Harry Stever passed away suddenly at 1.15 this morning at his home 704 ½ -8th St..  Born in Shawano May 5-1893.  Married September 24 – 1828 to Stephania Ziernzack.
06.  Thursday: Had our first Scout Committee meeting at Joe Hemmer’s tonite.  Frank Kempinger and John Franz were also there.
07.  Friday: George Roth, local police officer resigns this morning after pleading guilty to night time burglary.  He was caught last Monday night inside Bizz Marheine’s Service Station on South Main St..
08.  Saturday: This is Forget me not Day for the (D.A.V.) Disabled American Veterans during the World War.  Abruptly 150 people lost their lives early this morning on the 11 000 ton liner Morro Castle, when fire broke out in the passengers quarters.  The latter was on its way home from a cruise between Havanah and New York.  The accident occurred off the coast of New Jersey, near New York.
09.  Sunday: This is Joe Baier’s Birthday.  He is 30 and how we celebrated.  Had quite a party at the cottage.  Joe Hemmer is Master of Ceremonies, William Pable with Marion, Jess Sitter and Jean, Syl Sitter, John Koelbl, Matt and Mrs. Baier, Ann Baier –Raym Ostertag, William and Rose Mauritz and Family, Andrew Ruedinger, Joe and Anna Weisheipl, Miss Herbert and 2 girls whose names I do not remember.  Joe is tickled pink.  The party broke up at 1.30 A.M.
10.  Monday: The Jewish New Year began last evening, ushering in the year 5695 of the Hebrew Calendar.  Rev. Louis Edelson, Rabbi of the local B’nai Israel Congregation for 33 years passed away at the Michael Reese Hospital Chicago, this noon.  He was 56 years of age. 
11.  Tuesday: Dr. Joe J. Kronzer, City Physician underwent an emergency operation for the removal of his appendix this morning.
12.  Wednesday: Ed Fretchel has a birthday.  He is 49 years of age.  He also celebrates at the store, much to his sorrow.  His son Leonard said “Ma whats the matter with Pa” He is coming home crooked.  He almost took his wife Thres out for good time in the evening.  Took a drive to the cottage in the afternoon and cleaned up the remains from Sunday.  In the evening took Bill and Emma Siewert along to the cottage.  Had a nice game of cards and whatever goes with it.  Arrived home at 1.30 A.M.
13.  Thursday:
14.  Friday: Another nice warm day.  Did a little collecting on the Boy Scout Drive.
15.  Saturday: Hugh Johnson, National Recovery Administrator, Appointed by President Roosevelt is asked to quit by the strike committee of the United Textile Workers.
16.  Sunday: Attended 6 Oclock Mass, then took Anna Drexler and her daughters Rose, Margaret and Leona to Berlin.  Dropped Ed Fretchel at the cottage, to paint the garage floor.  The Drexlers visit Agnes.  She lives on Liberty St..  Back from Berlin and to work, took a family to Omro in the afternoon visited Stearns Drug Store, and on the way back picked up Ed Fretchel and then home for a bite to eat.  Back to work at 6 and worked until 11 P.M.
17.  Monday:
18.  Tuesday: Primary Election Day.  Took Sisters Ambrosia – Maximilla and Hermanhilda to Menasha, Back from there took Thres and Anna Drexler over to the polls to vote.  Took the children (Donald and Mary Ann) to the fair in the afternoon.  It was pleasant to be out.  People's Brewery was robbed of about $1500.
19.  Wed.: Attended prayer meet at the George Stein Residence tonite.
20.  Thurs. Geo.  Stein is laid to rest this morning.
21.  Fri.: Nome, Alaska City of Gold is in ruins from fire.  $2 000 000 damage and several dead.
22.   Sat. Ed and Thres Fretchel celebrate silver wedding. We helped celebrate, got home at 4 A.M. Sunday.  Frank Leach who established the Frank Leach Hardware Co.  Died this morning at the Masonic Home in Dousman.  Born in Oshkosh May 19 – 1851.  Was the father of Newton, Charles and Bob Leach, also Mrs. George Root, Mrs. May Pitcher and Mrs. Annabelle (Norman Granberg.
23.  Sunday: The boys at the store are very dry this morning.  I didn’t get there till noon.  Silver Wedding aftermath.  Well I was very dried too.
24.  Monday: Orville Horne passed away yesterday morning at 5 o’clock at his home 460 Washington Blvd.  Born April 19 – 1890.  He was vice president and treasurer of the Oshkosh Bedding Company.
25.  Tuesday: We are having summer weather.

29.  Saturday: Went out hickory nutting with the Heips this afternoon.  Got a terrible reception from one farmer, but a good one at Otto Haase in Poygan.  Met John Beerntsen there.  It began to rain and we quit hickory nutting in a hurry.  Donald is quite sick today, seems to have the stomach flu.
30.   Sunday: Took Ed Fretchel out to the cottage, to paint the garage floor.  Its a beautiful day.  The Fretchel’s were over to our house tonite for a visit.  Joe Heip is also here, alone of course, because Ann is out to the Keeno Party, and she could not get along without Keeno.  Robert Lanley 1212 Minn. St. is seriously hurt when the motorcycle Driven by Donald De Witt struck a telephone pole at 24th and Oregon Sts.  Mr. Lanley’s mother was Anna Sawall.
