Diary of Alfred E. Potter October, 1934

01.  Monday: Work until 10.45 tonight, and had a call before I got home.  Joe Baier answered it, Ella Meyer wanted a hypo syringe in a hurry.  Her father Mr. C. R. Meyer is very low.
02.  Tuesday:
03.  Wednesday: Dropped in to the store late tonite.  Joe Hemmer and John Koelbl are there too.  They just came from Pollack Joe’s.  Hemmer is talking much politics, John gets very serious with Mrs. Art Mueller.  Joe Baier, myself, Art and Mrs. enjoy a nice midnight dinner, but John and Joe passed out.  Well we took Hemmer home and put into bed.  John Koelbl had to do it himself alone.  World Series Baseball begins at Detroit today.  Dizzy Dean pitches the St. Louis Cardinals to an 8-3 victory.  Three men robbed the State Bank of Gresham of 4000 dollars, early this morning.  Took 2 hours to do the job.
04.  Thursday: Detroit Tigers win second game of World Series in the 12th inning.  Score 3 to 2.  Goose Goslin makes the winning hit. C. R. Meyer 84 died this afternoon at 1.15 at his home 102 Jefferson Ave..  He was a pioneer building contractor in Oshkosh.  Born in Germany March 24 – 1850.  He was the father of Edward H, Harry D, George J, Miss Ella Meyer, Mrs. H. B. Jackman, Mrs. Anna Clumpner, and Mrs. Elwyn F. Nelson Jr.  Mr. and Mrs. Albert Retelle 390 Hi Street had a close call yesterday, from asphyxiation.  Gas from pilot lights and a loose petcock on a gaslight were the cause.  Robert Lasley 1212 Minn. St. hurt Sunday afternoon in motorcycle accident passed away this morning at 5.17 at Mercy Hospital.  Born October 10 – 1912
05.  Friday: Joe Hemmer called up tonite.  He tells me he did not know what happened Wednesday night.  He said it was just one of those accidents.  St. Louis Cardinals win another game from the Detroit Tigers 4-1.  Paul (Daffy) Dean brother of Dizzy pitches.
06.  Saturday: Another pleasant day.  Did some shopping in the afternoon.  Wallace Kirsch had quite an accident near Cartwrights Apple stand on Route 41.  Was hit by another car, his car overturned, but he was unhurt.  I took him home with the contents of his truck.  Took Donald and Mary Ann for ride this afternoon.  Mary Ann wanted to visit Grand Ma Baier and she did.  Grand Ma got quite a kick out of that.  Governor Schmedeman of Wisconsin and his left leg amputated 6 inches above the knee today, to save his life from gangrene poisoning.  He is 70 but is holding up well.
07.  Sunday: Attended 6 Oclock Mass then to work.  Took Ed Fretchel out to the cottage.  This is a beautiful day.  Am beginning to feel the change of season.
08.   Monday: Another very nice day.  Folks are cleaning house.  St. Louis Cardinals win the sixth game of the World Series baseball 4-3.
09.  Tuesday: Agnes Drexler Kujawa presents Harry with a little baby girl, about 6.30 this evening.  Mary Putzer daughter of Wenz Putzer 7th Street is married to John Ebersberger at St. Vincent’s at 9:00 this morning.
10.  Wednesday: Took a ride to Milwaukee this afternoon with Mr. Mueller.  Took Anna and Joel Heip to Winneconne along to the Supper for the benefit of Father Victor Kandy’s Parish.  Played Keno and won nothing.  Joe, Byron Gunz and Gust Jeske did some campaigning.  Ended up at Nigl’s Tavern.  Donald goes back to school today.
11.  Thursday: Mrs. Jeske, Anna Heip and Thres attended St. John’s Card Party.  I bought a few beers for them at Doman’s after the party.  Mrs. Emma Wagner wife of Gustave Wagner 619 – 14th St. passed away last night at 8.50.  Born July 18 – 1874 at Friedheim, Posen-Germany.
12.  Friday: Father James Hagan delivers a Columbus Landing Day address over station WHBY.  Forty Hours Devotion begins at St. Vincent's today.  Bob Gunz starts putting radiators on our front porch today.
13.  Saturday: Took a drive this afternoon, landed at Otto Haase’s in Poygan, picked a peck of hickory nuts and had supper there.
14.  Sunday: Took the children to the cemetery today.  Its a very nice day.
15.  Monday: Another beautiful day, 74° in the shade.  Donald (son) is surely getting his appetite back; he ate nearly two large dumplings and 2 helpings of meat for dinner.  Had monthly meeting of M P D Co. tonite.

17.  Wednesday: The weather is changing.  Started a coal fire today.  Ed Fretchel is over to trim the trees at the house.  Our Fall 1¢ Sale begins today.  Attended card party at St. Peter’s Hall tonite for the benefit of the Colombian Squires.  Walter Woller passed away this morning.  Born June 3-1890 Brother-in-law to Harold Klemz.
18.  Thursday: The weather is colder and a coal fire feels comfortable.  Took in a movie tonite for a change.
19.  Friday:
20.  Saturday: Joe Kubasta is operated on at Mercy Hospital for appendicitis.  He is a pretty sick boy.
21.  Sunday: Attended six o’clock mass this morning.  Ed Fretchel wanted to go to the cottage but it rained.  St. Vincent’s Bazaar begins today.  Barbara Koelbl passed away this morning at her home 318 – 10th St..  Born April 4 – 1874 in Austria.  Survived by her daughter Mrs. Joseph Dichtl.  Her husband Karl passed away July 9th this year.

23.  Tuesday:
24.  Wednesday: Herb Schults bones for Milwaukee, that Al Reichenbach passed away this morning at his home in Wauwatosa.  Al used to travel the Fox River Valley for Eli Lilly J Company.  Attended St. Vincent’s Bazaar tonite.  Won a few prizes.  The attendance is not as large as last Sunday.
25.  Thursday: Attended the supper at Rev.  Stange’s church.  There are many politicians there.
26.  Friday:
27.  Saturday: Took Leona Drexler, her mother and Mary to see Agnes Kujawa’s baby.  Dropped in to see Fred Marquart at Berlin.
28.  Sunday: Attended six oclock Mass then to work for short time and took Ed Fretchel and his family out to the cottage.  Its a cold day.  The temperature is down to 22° this morning.  Took the children out to the cottage in the afternoon, its nice and warm in the cottage.  Attended St. Vincent’s Bazaar in the evening.  It’s the windup and we are lucky playing Keeno.  Won a Doll and Doll Crib, a Hassock and a pillow.  Louis Seiberlich wins 2 five Dollar Bills.
29.  Monday: Harry G Gould former president of Gould Mfg. Company passed away yesterday morning, at his home of a heart attack.
30.   Tuesday: Dick Doman has a birthday.  He is 51.  Attended the Kiwanis Halloween Party at the Grange Hall in Zion.
31.  Wednesday: Attended Halloween party and dance at the Clover Leaf Hall.  It's a good time, altho the Hall is somewhat crowded at times.  Art Mueller and his wife, Fred and Loretta and Margaret Voelz and Art Mueller are there from our crew.  Got home at 2:30 A.M.
