Diary of Alfred E. Potter October, 1943

01.  Friday: Breakfast at Lander’s.  Then over to “Doleith Company,” had an interesting interview with Mr. Jos. Patten.  He is the owner of Doleith.  Then over to J. Hag Company on Madison Street.  Stopped at Illinois Brier Pipe Co. without success.  Then over to the hotel to check out and we are on our way back to good old Wisconsin.  Stopped at Carl and Margarets on our way.  The baby is fine and growing.  Stopped at Slinger for a bite to eat.  I got within 3 quarters (25¢ Ea.) of a 21 dollar jackpot, and then for home.
02.  Saturday: Back on the job this morning and my desk is piled high with work.  I hear Friday morning was a bad one for Ann Weisheipl.  “Tiny Hill’s” band was in town Thursday night at Eweco, and a friend of Ed’s by the name of Anderson helps him celebrate.
03.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns, worked from 820 to 1220. Took a trip to St. Nazianz to see Donald.  We took along Mr. and Mrs. Fred Karst and Aunt Mary.  The boys are fine.  We find Herman Drexler, Mrs. Wenz Putzer, Annie Sippl, and the Stadtmuellers are also there.  Met Father Gregory – Father Bernard and Bro. Brendon.  Back home at 7 P.M. after a fine supper back to work until 930 P.M.
04.  Monday: Laurence Churchill is back at the North Store.  Marion Fretchel leaves today for California.  Father Aloys Bastian is at Mercy Hospital, where he is being treated for a bad cold.  Butter is now up to 16 ration points per pound.
05.  Tuesday: [T] Our lovely weather is keeping up.
06.  Wednesday: Took advantage of the nice weather.  Took Ed Fretchel along to the cottage, drained the water tank and took out the dock.  I made a wild goose chase to town for the cottage keys.
07.  Thursday: Dr. Ray Wagner leaves for Carlyle Barracks Pennsylvania.  After six weeks he is to be assigned to Fitzsimmons hospital Denver Colorado.

09.  Saturday: Harry McEvoy is laid to rest.  Services at St. Johns.
10.  Sunday: Drove to Milwaukee this morning after attending 730 Mass at St. Vincents with Holy Name Society.  Thres and Mary Ann are with me, arrived about noon.  Carl, Margaret, Ann were happy to see.  About 130 we drove to St. Anthony’s church where little “Gael Ann” is baptized.  Mrs. Roman Antkoski and myself are godmother and godfather.  Had dinner at Heineman’s, after dinner bade the folks goodbye and drove to “Riverside theatre.  “Larceny with Music” features Allan Jones and Kitty Carlisle and Brittons crazy band was there.  Back home at midnight.  Joe Baier and Emma Nigl are married four years today.  Rose Weisheipl has a birthday, she is 32.                  Com.  Harry McEvoy
11.  Monday: Don’t feel so well today.  Seems to be a complication of ailments.  New York Yankees win the World Baseball Series from the St. Louis Cardinals.  New York won 4 games – St. Louis 1 game.
12.  Tuesday: Had Ed Fretchel over to take off screens.  Walter Patri is appointed district Attorney by Judge Henry Hughes.  He takes the place of John Moore was will leave a Thursday for service with the U.S.A.  Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hagene observe their golden wedding anniversary today.  Henry was born Feb. 9 – 1870, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hagene.  Mrs. Hagene was Ida Zick born Mar. 28 – 1869.  Taught school at Grace Lutheran.  Their children Karl – Edgar Hagene and Mrs. Lauren Sheets.
13.  Wednesday: Wash windows on the outside of the house and then put on the winter storms and its just in time.  It looks like our nice weather is coming to an end.  We had about 3 weeks a very mild days.  After the job I had to lay down for the rest of the day.  I’m still feeling much under the weather.  Had a letter from Donald today.  Italy declares war on Germany.  She was formerly Germany’s ally.
14.  Thursday: Took Mary Ann for her first treatment by Mrs. O’Day at the Visiting Nurses Association building.
15.  Friday: Started our furnace fire for the winter, this evening.  It is turning suddenly colder.
16.  Saturday: Mary Ann gets another treatment this morning.  Took Mary Ann and Thres to the Oshkosh Theatre.  “So Proudly we hail” with Claudette Colbert – Paulette Goddard – Victoria Lake and Sonny Tufts.  When “Henry Aldrich Swings it” with Jimmy Lyddon is picture number two and a good one.
17.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns.  To work at 815 until 115.  A beautiful day but quite cold.  This afternoon took a ride to Sacred Heart Cemetery with Thres and Aunt Mary.
18.  Monday: [T] Hattie Petzold Mueller, Naomi’s mother has a birthday.  Born Oct. 18 – 1880.
19.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  A very interesting technicolor picture by Bell Aircraft Corporation showing the manufacture of airplanes was on the program.  Our table Gene Vogel –Archie Gifford –Ray Barandoll – Frank Sullivan.  Carl Pfeiffer begins working at South Store.
20.  Wednesday: A busy day with directors of the chamber of commerce.  Out for additional memberships.  Well I didn’t go so hot, altho I added one membership at “Pipkorns.” Had a swell dinner at the Athearn tonite and met with the four new directors Morris Bell –Dan Harmon –Francis Lamb – Warren Coe. Jerry L’Estrange is elected president for the ensuing year –Ray Kivell, Vice Pres.  Thres plays cards at South Side Business Mens Auxiliary.  Ben Bernie, the old maestro, passed away this morning in Calif.  Born in Bayonne N.J.  52 years ago in a family of 12.

23.  Saturday: Well, I find myself with lots of ambition tonite, so I clean up the basement at our house and it needed it badly.
24.  Sunday: This is Aunt Mary’s birth date, and what a birthday, she is 70.  Took her and Aunt Lena to Mt Calvary to the St. Lawrence College students chicken dinner and Bazaar.  A fine dinner and a well attended Bazaar.  I won a bottle of wine.  Met Father Gerald Walker, Rector also Father Lawrence, Father Raphael.  Showed the folks around the students chapel and the church.  In the evening Annie Heip – Lena – Thres Fretchel are all at our house to celebrate, and they sure did.  Annie Heip was really well organized, and the folks sure had a good time, And Mary said it was her best birthday.  Party broke up at 2 A.M. and I have to chauffeur the ladies home.
25.  Monday: Grandpa Fretchel also had a birthday yesterday.  He is  ___. I stopped today to congratulate him.  Randal Yancy (Barbara) is 34 today and Uncle Sam has him.  He passed as exam Saturday, and so did Elmer Salzieder our delivery service man.  Met Father Bastian and told him my dream where he preaches a long sermon, instead of the parishioners falling asleep, he himself falls asleep while preaching.

30.  Saturday: Took Mary Ann and Thres to the Strand.  Bob Hope and Betty Hutton star in “Lets Face It” Warren Williams as the “Lone Wolf” stars in “Passport to Suez.”

31.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns, then to work.  Thres takes Ed and Robert Fretchel to the cottage to put on the storms.  Robert hunts but is not lucky.  Mikey (the dog) has quite a day.  Mary Ann has a Halloween Party tonite.  Dolores Kinateder –Rosemary Koelbl –Virginia Binder –Ruth Andrashk, June Karl Lorraine Wolf and Nancy Neustifter are present.  I visited Anton Pable at Sunnyview this afternoon.                        Com.  Stanislaus Jarosch
