March 12

1942: "The Oshkosh "All Stars" won the "World's National Basketball Championship" at Chicago last night by defeating the Detroit team score 43-41. Tonite they receive a rousing welcome as they come home about 7 o'clock. A big parade from the depot to their headquarters. The mayor and other notables spoke over the radio. Sim Menzel broke his right arm today in a peculiar accident. He was getting out of bed, his one foot became entangled in the bed sheet and he fell out of bed and broke the arm above the elbow." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1943: "Ed Winklebauer who was on the ill-fated 'Chicago' when she was sunk by the Japs, was in the store today. He lost all his belongings, was in the water for 1 ½ hours. The water was warm but very uncomfortable on account of the oil on its surface. About 56 men and 6 officers were lost out of 1100 men. Melvin Jansen is also in today. He is stationed at Medford, Oregon." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1956: "From today and during this entire week, we have Services at St. Vincent's in the basement of the church. The communion rail is being lowered to floor level." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
