May 8

1945: "This is V.E.(Victory Europe) Day. Attended Mass at St. Vincent's 8 o'clock. Business in general is at a standstill. All taverns are closed for the entire day and evening. Our stores are closed during the afternoon. People are urged to make this a day of prayer and thanksgiving. Aunt Lena is with us today. Whistles blew and church bells pealed at 8 this morning to officially usher in V.E. Day. St. Vincent's rang for 30 minutes. Curfew and Brown out are called off." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1947: "Karl Kiekhafer is trying to cook up some more insurance for me. Took Thres out to look at the Lyman home. Art and Margaret Mueller spend the day in Milwaukee. Art sees Dr. Foerster and also Dr. Lee. Dr. Lee practiced in Oshkosh some years back. The "Telephone Strike" ended this morning. It was on for 31 days.Temperature is 30° this morning." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1953: "Joe works on our lawn today; he uses Krilium and Lawn Seed and uses Art Mueller's rotary hand tiller to do a good job. Electricians in the city go on strike today and we are wondering just how we will be affected with our job on Main Street." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
