Diary of Alfred E. Potter August, 1935

01.  Thursday: Sisters Saints Vincent’s spend their Annual Picnic Day at our cottage.  It is a nice day, not too hot.
02.   Friday:
03.  Saturday: St. Peter's Church has a new cross which is to be lighted for the first time tonite. It is purported to be the first of its kind in the U.S.A. It is constructed of stainless steel and lighted from within by lumiline, the latest development of lighting engineers.
04.  Sunday: A beautiful day.  Attended six oclock mass.  K C’s have their annual picnic at Silver Lake near Wautoma.  Saint Vincent’s Annual Picnic at South Park.  Attended the picnic in the afternoon and then back to the cottage.
05.  Monday: Back to town for wash day.  Back to the cottage in the evening.

08.  Thursday: The western part of Wisconsin suffers floods caused by recent storms and heavy rains.  Gay Mills, Soldiers Grove and Steuben streets are filled with water.  In Ohio also heavy floods cause 3 Million Dollar Damage.

11.  Sunday: The Baier Family own our cottage today.  The children are having a cottage party in honor of their parents 35th wedding anniversary which is to occur Tuesday.  Present were Matt, Lena, Joe Baier, Ann Rose, Wm Mauritz R Ostertag Grandma Baier, Little Joan and Billy Mauritz, Joe Hemmer, Marge Nuernberg Joe and Anna Weisheipl, Thres and myself.  It is a rather hot day.
12.  Monday: We do not come to town for wash day.  Took Marion and Joan Drexler to the cottage.
13.  Tuesday: Took Marion and Robert Fretchel to the cottage.  Had Ed and Thres Fretchel with us over night.  Did some bullhead fishing in the moonlight and had good luck.  It was great fun.  Hit the hay at 2.30 A.M.  Mrs. Fretchel almost in the moonlight dance in her undies at 2 A.M.
14.  Wednesday: Spent a pleasant afternoon and evening with the kids.  Gave them a long boat ride in the afternoon, over to Plummer’s Point.
15.  Thursday: Holy Day of Obligation. Attended 7 oclock Mass. Then to work. Took a drive to Milwaukee in the afternoon with the family. Took them to Washington Park. The children get quite a kick out of the monkeys. The mosquitoes are bad. Mary Ann was pretty well bitten up.
16.  Friday: Bad news over the radio this morning.  Will Rogers Actor –Comedian and Wiley Post round the world flyer are both killed when their plane will only about 50 feet to the ground.  Their plane crashed 15 miles south of Point Barrow, Alaska.  Father John Nuernberg dropped in for short visit today.  Joe and Anna Weisheipl spend the night with us at the cottage.  Cork Weisheipl is 26 today.
17.  Saturday:
18.  Sunday: Attended 6 Oclock Mass as usual.  Then to work.  Took a drive to the cottage in the afternoon.  Will and Emma Siewert spent the day with us.
19.  Monday: Father Leo Schiffler drops in for a visit.  I haven’t seen him in years.  He is at Saint Veronica is South Milwaukee.  He is on his way to visit Rev.  Victor Kandy and John Nuernberg.  Drove the family back up to the cottage tonite.
20.  Tuesday: Had visitors at the cottage tonite.  Harry and Agnes Kujawa and Baby from Berlin and Leona Drexler.  Mrs. Anna Drexler is feeling somewhat better.
21.  Wednesday: Ladies 500 Club at the cottage today. Bill Siewert and myself get the refreshments. Visit People's Brewery and Ray Robbins. Men also come for the evening. The following were present: Wm and Emma Siewert, Ed and Margaret Kremer, Louis and Kathryn Kraemer, Ed and Jesse Klawun, Paul and Mrs. Franzke, John and Marie Schmidt, Bill and Carrie Glidden.
22.  Thursday: Joe Weisheipl Jr. has a birthday.  He is 28.
23.  Friday: Scholls Man “Duffy” is in town.  Meeting of our stockholders tonite.  After the meeting fish at Aloys Nigl’s.  Got home at 1.30 A.M. to bed at 2.45.  What a night owl. 
24.  Saturday: Hate to get up this morning.

29.  Thursday: Off to Chicago this morning with Norman Brown – Wm Welch and Mr. Ziehm of Berlin.  Registered at the Palmer House.  It is a nice trip.  In the evening witness the game between the “Chicago Bears” and the “College All Stars” The Bears win the 5-0.  It rained as usual, but not too much to spoil the game.  Had dinner at the Palmer House at 12 Midnight with a fine floor show and music by Ralph Ginsberg orchestra.  Got to bed at 4.30 Chicago time.
30.  Friday: Down to McKesson Fuller to do some holiday buying.  Had lunch at the usual places, the Chicago Northwestern Depot.  To McClurgs in the afternoon.  Then out to “Gittings” at 2059 W 95th Street.  Dinner at Phil Schmidt’s on the Indiana Road and what a meal.  Great big Perch of Froglegs and a lot of extras.  Another trip to Gittings and then home word bound.  Got in Saturday 2 A.M.
31.  Saturday: Back on the job.
