Diary of Alfred E. Potter September, 1936

01.  Tuesday: I’m all for Chicago this morning.  The weather is nice when we leave, but in Chicago it is raining.  We enjoyed a boat ride on the “Theo” just the same.  Mr. Ely and Leo Lanigan are our hosts.  The big football game between the Detroit Lyons in the College All Stars is postponed until tomorrow.  I tried to locate Cork Weisheipl but no luck.
02.  Wednesday: Up early this morning over to McKesson Fuller to do some holiday buying.  Lunch at the Northwestern Depot, a big dinner at the Palmer Hotel Empire Room.  Located Cork Weisheipl at 2124 North Hobson Phone Diversity 105 78.  Well he was glad to see some one from home.  Took him along to the feed and the football game.  It’s a beautiful night, moonlight and warm weather.  About 75 000 people to see the game.  It ends in a tie 7-7.  Homeward bound after the game got home at 2.30 A.M.
03.  Thursday: Sisters of St. Vincent’s have their annual outing at our cottage yesterday.  We move our family back out to the country today.

06.  Sunday: This is my Sunday on.  On the job until 9.30 P.M.  Ed and Thres Fretchel stop at the store after 9 Oclock so does Joe Heip and Anna.  Well we end up here at home, played 5 handed sheephead, the party lasts until 3 A.M.
07.  Monday: Well I’m not much good for work today.  About an hour this noon and from 6 to 10.30 P.M.
08.  Tuesday: Dropped in to see Matt Baier.  He is a little better.
09.  Wednesday: Joe Baier has a birthday.  He is 32.  Mary Ann and myself dropped in to see me and gave him a present.  Matt is still showing improvement.

15.  Tuesday: Primary Election today and it rains all day.  They say it is Democratic weather.  Margaret and Carl Radamsky are here.  They take Anna (Margarets mother) to Mercy Hospital.  Aloys Metzen had an accident with their car today.  Slipped on a wet pavement, slid into another car and caved in his radiator.
16.  Wednesday: Had a very pleasant visit with Matt Baier this evening.  He seems to be somewhat better.  We even joked together.  Seems nice to see him a little brighter.
17.  Thursday: We have Painter’s Meeting at the Hotel Raulf.  Benjamin Moore Company put it on.  We have 95 Painters there.  Anna Drexler is operated for rupture (Post Operative).  Saw her this evening, she is still somewhat under the influence of Ether.  Matt Baier has a heart attack tonite.  He is not so well tonite.
18.  Friday: Joe Baier tells me his dad is in pretty bad shape.
19.  Saturday: Took a trip to Maple Crest Sanatorium at Whitelaw to visit Sister Claire Marie.  She does not look well.  Has been here almost 2 months.  Joe and Anna Weisheipl are with us.  Dropped in to visit Father Pufahl at Whitelaw.  Had a very pleasant chat with him and Clara Madler, his cook.  The Children visit with Joe Drexlers daughters.  Margaret is with us for dinner.  We had a chicken lunch at the “Airport Inn.”
20.  Sunday: Attended 730 Mass, took Rose and Anna Baier home.  Their dad is quite low today, although he recognized us this morning.  Then down to work.  In the afternoon we had a last look at Geo Haverty, then to the Hospital to visit Anna Drexler, then out to Riverside Cemetery, then over to Matt Baiers and back to work at 5 P.M.  Thres and Anna played Keno at St. Vincent’s.  Bishop Rhode confirms at class of 110 persons at Sacred Heart.  Joe Heip Sr. is at Appleton on business.
21.  Monday: Down to Matt's (Baier, Theresa's cousin?) this morning, he is losing ground.  I phoned for Father Bastian at 2.30 this afternoon.  He came immediately and offered prayers for him.  Matt passed away very peacefully at about 5.15 P.M.

23.  Wednesday: Mrs. Micko arise from St. Paul.  She is a cousin to Matt, Grandma Baier is her aunt.  Cork Weisheipl is also here from Chicago.
24.  Thursday: Matt Baier is laid to rest this morning.
25.  Friday: Governor Alfred Landon, Republican nominee for President of the U.S.A. is in Oshkosh tonite and tomorrow morning.
26.  Saturday: Took Lena Baier and Mrs. Micko to Mercy Hospital to see Anna Drexler.
27.  Sunday: To 730 Mass this morning then to work.  Visited Anna Drexler at the hospital this afternoon.  Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schultz dropped in for a visit.  Harry and Agnes Kujawa are here from Berlin.
28.  Monday: Visited for short time at Baiers this evening.
29.  Tuesday: Mrs. Micko leaves for home in St. Paul.
