Diary of Alfred E. Potter December, 1936

01.  Tuesday: Took Art and Margaret Mueller along to see Ray Grace is Line at the Athearn.  Wound up at Harold Bouchelle’s got home 1.45 A.M.
02.  Wednesday: Anna Weisheipl has a birthday.  I think she is 53.  We attended “White Hunter” at the Oshkosh Theatre.  Warner Banter and June Lang starring.  Wound up at Rusch’s Heidelberg.  Home at 1.30 A.M.
03.  Thursday: Staid in bed this morning.  Didn’t feel so good.  Sheephead Club at Joe Baier’s tonite.  Hemmer gets the dollar.  Home at 2 A.M.  Lena had a good laugh during our game.  Bill Mauritz pulled a good one.  She says its the first hearty laugh she had since Matt passed away.  9° above tonite when I got home.  Santa Claus and his parade are in town today.

05.  Saturday: We are having a real snowstorm this afternoon and evening.  Temperature is going down.
06.  Sunday: Thres plays Keno at St. Vincent’s.  Wins a table cover and 5 pounds sugar.  Temperature is 25° above this morning and 15° below tonite.  What a change.  Attended 6 oclock Mass then to work.
07.  Monday: Ladies of St. Vincent’s Annual Christmas party tonite.  I looked at our thermometer at 2 oclock this morning it registered 17° below.  After work tonite we visited Joe and Mary Kollross with Norbert and Esther Mueller.

09.  Wednesday: Did some visiting tonite.  Stopped to see Mrs. Joe Reichel.  She is very low.  Took Father Bastian over to pray for.  Visited Anna Drexler for short time, then over to see Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Paulik.  They’re both down in bed.  Had quite a visit with Mrs.  She told of 4 doctors, Drs. Roos, Bickel, Gudden,            who had taken care of her.
10.  Thursday: King Edward VIII of England advocates as Gittings so he can married the woman of his choice Mrs. Wallis Warfield Spencer Simpson twice divorced American.  His brother George VI will succeed him as King of the British Empire.

20.  Sunday: Six oclock Mass this morning.  This turns out to be a very busy day at the store.  We have a record for parcel post.  Worked all day until 11.15 P.M.  Dropped in a few minutes at Anna Drexlers and the Paulicks.  The children go to the Forester Christmas Party.

22.  Tuesday: Father Jos. Ahearn is operated on this morning.  Had to get 3 more ton “Stoker Nut Coal” at Cook & Brown’s
23.  Wednesday: Rose and Bob Gittings are here from Chicago.
24.  Thursday: Christmas shopping is very brisk and the weather is like spring.  Temperature is 46° above.  We do not attend midnight mass.  People attending midnight service are greeted with a heavy rain.
25.  Friday: Attended 7.30 Hi Mass.  This is surely a warm Christmas Day.  Temperature is 54° above zero.  I worked part of the day and from 6 to 8.30 in the evening.  Bob and Rose are over in the afternoon also Harry Agnes and family, Leona and Ernie Clark.  Mrs. Lena Baier – Ray Ostertag Ann and the baby are also over.  About 10 P.M. we go to see the Heips with Rose and Bob.  Cork Weisheipl is in town.  Played Sheephead and Poker.  Carl Radomsky and Margaret, in around 11.30.  The party lasts until 2.30 A.M.  I get to bed at 3.
26.  Saturday: Carl and Margaret dropped in on their way back to Milwaukee, left some presents for all of us.  Cork goes back to Chicago.  It’s raining and misting all day temperature is near the 50° mark.  Took a night off tonite for a change.
27.  Sunday: Six oclock mass this morning, another misty morning.  This is the fourth day of wet weather.  I feel punk like the grippe, but I work all day and forget it as much as possible.  Weather changes this afternoon and tonite temperature is at 28 with moonlight and a few clouds.
28.  Monday: Weather is again moderating.  Helped the boys deliver today, covered 60 miles this afternoon and evening just around town.
29.  Tuesday: Albert Holzbauer 150 Walter St. is a Mercy Hospital.  Visited him at room 127 and find he has a neighbor Tony Sippl in his ward also.  Tony was operated for rupture.  Visited Father Joseph Ahearn for a while.  He was surprised to see me.  He was a operated a week ago today, gall bladder and appendix removed.  Ann Drexler – Rose –Bob and Lena and Ernie are over tonite with a keg of beer.  Party broke up at 1 A.M.
30.  Wednesday: Lots of rain today temperature is a 51°.  Even a little sunshine this afternoon.  I feel punk, stomach is bad.
