Diary of Alfred E. Potter January, 1936

01.  Wednesday: Arrived home at 4.30 A.M.  To bed at 5 A.M.  Attended 10.30 oclock Mass at St. Vincent’s.  Then to work for a while. Slept during the afternoon.  Back on the job at 5 P.M. for the rest of the day.

05.  Sunday: Attended 9 Oclock Mass, then to work.  Visited Mrs. Will Jess from Ripon – at Mercy Hospital.  She is doing quite well, and is due to go home tomorrow.  Learn that Emma Nigl has changed her name to Blackbird.  She is 63, he is 39.  Bill Jess is looking natural.  Mary and goes to Allis Wolf’s birthday party.  Visited at the Baier’s for few hours and had supper there.  Anton Paulick 741 – 11th and Jimmie Frank Jungwirth celebrate their Birthdays today.
06.  Monday: Annual Meeting of the stockholders of Mueller Potter Drug Company.  Officers all re-elected.  F. W. Mueller Pres. Harold Mueller Vice Pres. A.E. Potter Secy. – Treas.
07.  Tuesday: We are having much snow of these days.
08.  Wednesday: Carl Radomsky is in town.  He and Margaret Drexler are to be married February 1st.  Jackson Day is celebrated by the Democrats all over the country.  The President spoke over the Radio.
09. Thursday: Agnes Drexler Kujawa has a birthday.  She is 24.  Took Ed and Thres Fretchel for a visit at the Weisheipl’s.  Joe Sr. is not home however.  Roads are bad and much snow keeps him at Seymour overnight.

11.  Saturday: Donald (son) goes to see “Shirley Temple” in “The Littlest Rebel” at the Strand Theatre.  He staid for 4 shows and has us all worried.  We thot [sic] that he had become lost.
12.  Sunday: Attended six oclock mass this morning.  Then to work.  Took the children to church.  They have their annual procession this afternoon in honor of the Christ Child.

15.  Wednesday: Visited at Ed Fretchel’s tonite.  Anna and Joe Weisheipl are there also.  Broke up the party at 1.30 A.M.
16.  Thursday:
17.  Friday: Mary Ann is sick today.  Cannot attend school.  Earache and bad stomach.  Her Pal Mark Steckbauer has to stay home too.
18.  Saturday: Took Grandma Baier home from church this morning.  She feels the sharp winter air considerably.  King George V of England is quite ill with the bronchial cold.  His heart is quite weak.
19.  Sunday: Attended 7.30 Hi Mass this morning.  Couldn’t rouse out for six oclock.  Took the children along to make some deliveries this afternoon.  Back to work in the evening until 9 P.M.  The Heips are over for the evening
20.  Monday: Nine below zero this morning.  The King of England is very low this morning.  City Aldermen vote 19-13 to amend city zoning ordinance to permit building of new courthouse on the Clark-Kennedy sight.  Mary Ann (daughter) after having been corrected several times as to her English said to me: 'Oh Daddy don't be such a smart boy.
21.  Tuesday: King George V of England passed away at “Sandringham Palace” shortly before midnight after a 4 days illness.  Prince of Wales becomes King Edward VIII.  He is a bachelor.
22.  Wednesday: Wow its cold this morning 23° below zero.  I’m delivery boy most of the day.  Got stuck on Sawyer Ave, had to be pulled out.  In the evening skidded into a car parked in a rut, got a nice dented fender.  It’s very cold tonite.
23.  Thursday: It is 24° below zero this morning.  Baby boy born to Ann Baier.  Doctors don’t like to be called out on cold mornings like this one for confinement cases.  [Blogger’s note: Baby is Ray Ostertag Jr.]
24.  Friday: It is 25° below zero this morning.

27.  Monday: James W. Dunham died this morning 8 Oclock aged 80.  He was a neighbor of ours on 13th Street 40 years ago.  He gave me my first baseball bat.  He manufactured baseball bats for a time.  Father to Art – Al –Ren – Ruby Dunham.  Forgot to more sons, Clyde of Minneapolis – Dio of Detroit.
28.  Tuesday: King George V is laid to rest today within the walls of Windsor Castle, in the royal vault of St. George’s Chapel, the burial crypt of Great Britain Kings.
29.  Wednesday:
30.  Thursday: There are many “Birthday Balls” in honor of our President “Franklin D. Roosevelt,” to aid the Warm Springs Foundation for infantile paralysis.  Peacock Lunch Room –Cocktail Lounge open to the public today.  Karl Radomsky blows into town, to make arrangements for his wedding Saturday.  Mrs. Anna Pausig, Sister to Mrs. F.W. Mueller passed away this morning at 8.10.  She had suffered a paralytic stroke last Sunday evening.  Born Feb 25 – 1865.  Mother to Clara Mueller.  Survived by husband Gustav – six sons and three daughters.
