Diary of Alfred E. Potter November, 1936

01.  Sunday: To six oclock Mass this morning.  Then on the job the rest of the day.  The Heips come in at 10.30 P.M. for a game of sheephead.
02.  Monday: To seven Oclock Mass this morning.  A Day of Rain and Fog.

04.  Wednesday: This is my birthday and it is a lovely day too.  Had a little party at the cottage Joe and Anna Weisheipl Ed and Thres Fretchel.  It was very cozy with fireplace player, and the heater.  Had a card from Margaret and Carl, a letter from Rose Gittings.
05.  Thursday: Our sheephead club meets at Joe Hemmer’s tonite.  Say does he ever serve good Chili and he has a nice assortment of wines Sherry –Muscatel also some good old Braumeister.  Well I won the Dollar with 70 Points.  To bed at 2 A.M.
06.  Friday: Emma Siewert has a birthday.  She is 50.  She looks well enough to live to the 100.  Up at 515 this morning in to 530 Mass.  Visited Mrs. Jos. Reichel 522 – 15th St. this afternoon.  She is not doing very well.

08.  Sunday: That surely looks like winter this morning.  Attended 600 Mass then to work.  In the afternoon visited Anna and Leona Drexler for time.  Anna is feeling about as well as can be expected.
09.  Monday: Heard the sad news this morning that Dr. E. L. Weinzierl and Ed Konrad were drowned in Lake Butte des Morts yesterday afternoon.  Konrads body is found this morning clinging to the anchor of their overturned outboard motorboat.  Ed (Abe) Konrad born in Oshkosh July 28 – 1906.  Dr. Weinzierl born at Tower Minnesota May 1 – 1901.  Dr. Joseph G Mayo, son of Dr. Charles Mail, Famous Rochester Surgeon is killed by a Northern Pacific Passenger train 2 miles south of Cochran Wisc.  Born August 31 – 1902.  His father Charles and Uncle William head the Mayo Clinic at Rochester Minnesota.

11.  Wednesday: Karl and Margaret Radomsky are in town.  I spent the evening at Ann Drexler’s with them.  Harry and Agnes are here also.
12.  Thursday: We have a new decoration on our house, a "Chicken Pox" card.  Donald (son) is the victim.
13.  Friday: Thres has a birthday.  Should this be called a golden anniversary.  She is 50.  Thres and Ann Weisheipl here Alec Templeton Concert at the First Congregational Church.  Heine and his band are at The Eagles Ballroom tonite.  Harry and Agnes Kujawa are here from Berlin.  Forty Hours Devotion begins at Sacred Heart.  Had our weekly meeting of the advertising committee at the South Side Store.
14.  Saturday: Dr. E.L. Weinzierl’s body has not been recovered as yet.  It is now nearly all week since she was lost in Lake Butte des Morts.  Joe and Anna Heip spend the evening with us.
15.  Sunday: To 6 Oclock Mass.  Took Ed and Karl Fretchel to the cottage to take out the dock.  The lake is very rough.  I worked at the store most of the day.

19.  Thursday: Joe Hemmer – Joe Baier –Wm Mauritz are here for a game of sheephead, the first time in years.  Joe Baier wins the dollar.
20.  Friday: This is Arthur and Margaret Mueller’s wedding anniversary.  They are married 8 years.  Dropped in to see Mrs. Joe Reichel, she is sinking fast.
21.  Saturday: Mary Ann is showing signs of chicken pox.  John Schneider opens a haberdashery at 11 Hi Street today.
22.  Sunday: Took a ride to the cottage this afternoon.  Norbert Mueller happened to drive out with Esther and Dicky.  Joe and Anna Weisheipl are over for a game of sheephead.  They come in at 10.30 PM and staid until 1.30 A.M.
23.  Monday: Mary Ann is home from school, she developed chicken pox.  Had our entire crew working tonight until 130 A.M.  Christ Monday is held up at their tavern just before we lock up.  Officer Guenther informed us of the hold up.  The hold up man got over 26 dollars.
24.  Tuesday: Visited Joe Reichel and Mrs. tonite.  Mrs. Reichel is able to sit up a little, she is very weak.  Thres and Anna Heip go to St. Mary’s to win a turkey.  Well they didn’t win any, so Anna bought one.  They called me at midnight to take them home, well they had company Erna Frank, her mother Mrs. Nichols, a lady living on Ceape Street  all 200 pounders, my car nearly broke down.
25.  Wednesday: Started Mrs. Hemmer out with the Drisdol treatment today.  I’m in hopes it will do her some good.  Getting colder 10° above tonite.
26.  Thursday: Got up at 10 oclock this morning.  Had a fine “Turkey” dinner.  Uncle Joe Weisheipl has a funny accident this morning.  Moving a 5 gallon jug of wine from one part of the basement to another, he tripped and fell break in the drive and losing the contents.  His Close for pretty well wined.  The folks had a good laugh about it.  In the evening after work Joe and Ann come over to play sheephead.  Joe wins two games Anna two and I one.  I transported them from home and back.
27.  Friday: Its three above this morning, getting close to zero.

29.  Sunday: Six oclock Mass this morning.  Worked all day.  The Heips come over at 10 P.M. for a game of sheephead.
30.  Monday: Had our monthly meeting at the North Side Store, got home early 11.45 P.M.  Visited Mrs. Joe Reichel during the evening.  Her condition is about the same.  She needs an invalid cushion, sitting in a chair quite a little, can not breathe while lying down.  Donald goes back to school today.
