Diary of Alfred E. Potter May, 1936

01.  
02.  Saturday: Ann Mauritz died suddenly this morning on the way to Mercy Hospital.  She had not been well for few days but nothing serious seem to be wrong with her.  Joe Baier visit her yesterday and she seemed to be getting better.  She to the sponge bath early this morning, about 8 Oclock she became very ill a physician called.  When he came she had rallied, he advised taking her to the hospital, on the way she passed away.  Born March 5 – 1906.  Sure a shock to all of us.
03.  Sunday: This is a big day for Donald.  He received his first holy Communion this morning.  The weather is cool.  Took Donald and Teddy Steckbauer to have their pictures taken this afternoon.  Attended afternoon service.  Back to work at 5 P.M.  Harry Kujawa dropped in for a few minutes.  After work the birthday at Joe Heip is celebrated at the store, then we celebrate some more at his house.  We also played some sheephead.
04.  Monday: Attended prayer meet for Anne Mauritz tonite.
05.  Tuesday: Attended the legion “Jollies” tonite and it’s plenty warm too.  This is the first night and the boys need a little more stage practice.  Frank Haidlinger is reelected president of the board of Public Works.
06.  Wednesday: The ladies almost won 300 dollars at the Oshkosh Theatre tonight.  Well it’s just too bad.  Took them to Harold Bouchelle’s for a little chicken lunch after the movie.  Met Lowell Procknow there.  He said the Jollies went over better tonight, but Josephine Frintz is ill and a substitute had to take her place.
07.  Thursday: Ed Wolf took quite a fall down a long flight of stairs at Morgan’s where he has worked a good many years.  The extent of his injuries is not known, they may be quite serious.  He is unconscious.
08.  Friday: Took a drive to Milwaukee today with Thres and Anna Heip.  Looked up Margaret Radomski located her at 1570 South 24th St..  Message at Drug Service for me with news that Rose being very ill at Chicago.  Had a light lunch at Harry Wolf’s then down town.  Had a suit measured at Moritz and Winter.  Then to Howdin Products Company.  Met the ladies at Gimbels back to Harry’s place for some cheese and beer, then home.  Back to work at 7 P.M.
09.  Saturday: Edward Wolf 927 South Park Ave.  Former Aldermen died this morning at Mercy Hospital.  This is indeed a shock.  Thres and I had quite a number of friendly visits with him.  He was born in Austria Sept 17 – 1888.
10.  Sunday: Margaret and Carl are here from Milwaukee also Harry and Agnes Kujawa from Berlin.  This is mothers day, our Mama receives a plant and also presents from the kiddies.  Took Ed Fretchel out to the cottage for some odd jobs.  He took Leonard and Robert along.
11.  Monday: Art Hill’s furnace backfired this afternoon.  They had a smudge at the house, but no damage.
12.  Tuesday: Paul Waltner is in town.  He introduces his wife.  He is now working at one of the Eckert Drug Stores in your Erie Pennsylvania.  He worked for us 10 years ago.  Mary Sitter 45 died last night at John Sitters home.  She had been ill for several years.  She was a schoolmate of mine.  Born March 21 – 1891.  Ed Wolfe laid to rest at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
13.  Wednesday: Little Dean Tulledge, the neighbors little boy picks 21 of our tulips for himself and his little sister Joan.  Had a last look at Mary Sitter tonite.
14.  Thursday: Had a pleasant visit at Richard Domans tonite.  Played sheephead for diversion.  Got home at 1.15 A.M.  Dr. William Wagner is a new director of the Oshkosh Building and Loan Association.  He succeeded the late Ed F. Wolf.  Mary Sitter laid to rest this morning.
15.  Friday: Took Thres and Anna Heip to the cottage after dinner.  They did a lot of cleaning up.  Harvey Plashko did some more to the cottage after 10 P.M.  The ladies and I played cards until 1 A.M.  A lunch and then home at 2 A.M.  Its a cold night and a fire feels very pleasant.
16.  Saturday: Bob Gittings and Rose, baby Teddy and Mr. and Mrs. Gittings drive up from Chicago this morning.  They visit at our house this evening and stay until 1.30 A.M.  Even Grandma Anna Drexler and Leona came along.  Leona and her mother feel very good.  Well Im getting used to these late nights, this is #3 for us, Thursday – Friday – Saturday.  The White Bass Festival ends tonite with the crowning of the White Bass Queen “Mary Erdlitz.”
17.  Sunday: Took Ed Fretchel and Karl out to the cottage.  They put in the dock and also caught a few fish.  I worked all day.  After work at night took a drive out to the cottage with Joe and Anna Heip.  We called the night at 1 A.M.  Holy Name Meeting tonite at St. Vincent’s.  Judge Henry Hughes is the speaker.  Joe Hemmer also speaks, about Joe Baier, in fact so much that Joe left the meeting.  Bob and Mr. Gittings left for home this afternoon.
18.  Monday: Monthly meeting of our clerks and stockholders.  We begin our Summer Schedule at the South Side Store.  Joe Baier is the one to get the first afternoon off.

20.  Wednesday: Had to have a furnace fire today.  I almost had an afternoon off, but the weather is so cold I prefer to work.  Rose and Mrs. Gittings are over for a visit tonite.

22.  Friday: Mrs. Gittings and Rose are our noonday guests.  Mrs. Gittings returns to Chicago this evening about 6 Oclock.

28.  Thursday: Mr. Charles Dietzo takes onto himself a third wife at St. Vincent’s Church.  Ed Fretchels dad is best man.  This is Father Aloys Bastians birthday.  He is 62.  Has been our pastor of good many years.  Edward Steckbauer Jr. has a birthday.  We attended St. Vincent’s Second Annual Father’s and Mother’s Day Program tonite.  Had a good time.

30.  Saturday: Spent the day at our cottage.  This is my second full day off this year.  I don’t feel very good.  I think I should be working.  Joe Heip and Ann come out so do Harry Kujawa and Bob Gittings.  The fishing is good.  Everybody catches fish except Harry.
