Diary of Alfred E. Potter October, 1935

01.  Tuesday:
02.  Wednesday: Mr. Mueller and John Demgen leave for Chicago to see the World’s Series Ball Games.
03.  Thursday:
04.  Friday: A nice day but cold.  Temperatures 30 this morning.  Detroit Tigers defeat The Chicago Cubs 6 to 5 in an eleven inning game at Chicago.
05.  Saturday: Took Grandma Meisinger to the hospital to see her daughter Anna Drexler.  Anna was indeed glad to see her.  Took Joe and Anna Heip and the family to Otto Haas at Poygan.  We do some hickory nutting and have supper there.  Donald learns about milking cows.  Detroit Tigers again win from the Cubs 2 to 1.  I win a dollar on the game.
06.  Sunday: Attended six oclock Mass.  Then took Ed Fretchel to the cottage.  He is transplanting raspberry bushes.
07.  Monday: Began to take “Enterol” treatment this morning.  Am trying to prevent the numerous colds I get every fall and winter.  Santa Claus comes to our house early this year.  He brought a new “General Electric Refrigerator” and Agnew “Oxford Universal” Gas Stove this afternoon.
08.  Tuesday:
09.  Wednesday: Mr. Mueller is back from a weeks vacation.
10.  Thursday: Rose Weisheipl has a birthday.  She is 24.  Took Margaret Drexler to see her mother.
11.  Friday: Forty Hour Devotion begins at Saint Vincent’s.  Rev. John Nuernberg has tonite’s Sermon.
12.  Saturday: Columbus Day today.  It is being observed as a holiday.  Father John Nuernberg dropped in to see me this morning.  To church in the afternoon and evening.  Margaret Drexler goes to Milwaukee to visit her sweetie Karl Radomsky.  Karl’s Sister is here on a visit from Canada.  Had a chicken lunch with Joe and Anna Heip at Al Rush’s.
13.  Sunday: To early mass this morning.  A severe thunderstorm passed well we were in church.  Mary Ann to although she nearly were shot and had to hold for years.  Donald told us he was nearly “stroked” by the storm.  Visited Anna Drexler at the hospital in the afternoon.  Met a Mrs. Hoeft there.  Her mother had a gallstone operation.  Mrs. Hoeft is acquainted with the Bill Jess Family.  The temperature rises to 70° today.  Joe and Anna Weisheipl are here for a few games of sheephead, after the close of Forty Hour Devotion at Saint Vincent’s.
14.  Monday: Took the girls over to Mercy Hospital to see their mother.  This is the last time as she is to go home tomorrow, after a 5 weeks stay at the hospital.  Rose Weisheipl begins work at our South Side Store this morning.  Margaret Drexler took an unexpected long nap this noon.  She woke up at 2.30 in the afternoon.
15.  Tuesday: Anna Drexler is removed to her home 745-12th Street after a five weeks stay at Mercy Hospital.  She is much improved and we hope she will continue on the road to health.  Anna’s Sister –Marg Reetz is here from California on a visit.
16.  Wednesday: Took a drive to Milwaukee with Thres and Anna Heip.  Stopped at Mutual Drug and Drug Service.  Saw “Blackstone” Magician at The Riverside Theatre.  Best Magician I ever saw.  Even raised a young lady and had her suspended in midair for about 10 minutes.  Our Fall One Cent Sale Begins today.
17.  Thursday: Landed in Harold Bouchelle’s “National Tavern” tonite, had a fine chicken dinner.  Ended at Martin Koeck’s.
18.  Friday: Carl Bechler is in town.  He gives us some pointers about our toilet goods departments.
19.  Saturday: Helped out at the North Store today.  Had Margaret Voelz and Rose Weisheipl come over also.  Last day of 1¢ Sale brought in 502 dollars at the store.  Had a chicken lunch with the Heips at “The National Tavern.”
20.  Sunday: Early Mass as usual.  A very nice day.  Took Ed Fretchel to the cottage for a little work transplanting shrubbery, and trees.  Saint Vincent’s Bazaar begins today.  Visited Anna Drexler this afternoon.  Joe Baier takes an airplane ride with John Koelbl.  Steve Whitman is the aviator to take them up.  “Sid Smith” Creator of the Gumps “Andy –Minn – Chester –Uncle Bim and others was killed today in a head on collision between two autos near Harvard Illinois.  He was 50 years old, survived by his widow, a Son – 4 Sisters – 2 Brothers.
21.  Monday: Mrs. Elizabeth Kaatz died last night at 9.40 at 616 – 14th Street.  Born in Germany April 7 – 1861.  She was the mother of John –Joe – and Frank and Josephine Kaatz.
22.  Tuesday: Attended prayer meeting for Mrs. Elizabeth Kaatz at the Fiss Bills Funeral Home.
23.  Wednesday: Johnny Revolta former West Side Oshkosh lad wins the National Professional Golfers Tournament.  He wins from Tommy Armour, at Oklahoma City."  (Blogger's Note: It was the PGA tournament.)
24.  Thursday: Sister-in-law “Mary Drexler” has a birthday.  She is 62 years of age.  Attended "Chicken Dinner" at Rev. Stange's Emmanuel Lutheran Church.  In the evening Card Party at St. Peter's Hall.  This hall has been completely redecorated.  The bowling alley has also been taken out of the basement.
25.  Friday: F. W. Mueller takes Joe Baier along to Milwaukee, to the Rexall Meeting.  Fire destroys the Willard Cartwright farm across from the Country Club.  All the buildings are raised –home – barn – and tool shed.  This is the second time in about 5 weeks that the Cartwrights meet with bad luck.  In September and hail storm destroyed their Apple Crop.  Their farm was formerly owned by the Buckstaffs.
26.  Saturday: Visited Jacob Pollock Sr. and Mrs..  Also Anna Drexler.  Ann is doing quite well.  Donald and Mary Ann visit at Fretchels.
