Diary of Alfred E. Potter March, 1935

01.   Friday: Anna Baier is starting the month with a cold.

06.  Wednesday: Lent begins today.  Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes of the U.S.  Supreme Court passed away this morning from bronchial pneumonia.  He was almost 94 years of age, his birthday only three days away.
07.  Thursday: This is Mary Anne’s Birthday and she celebrates too.  Gave away chocolate suckers at the kindergarten, and had a party after school.  Joan Herndon –Betty Hill –Joan Tulledge –Alice Wolf –Joyce Golz –Mark Steckbauer –Bobby Tulledge –Donald and Ann Baier.  The children staid until 6 P.M. and had a real time.  I had to go to Milwaukee at noon, had Art Gabbert Jr. for sidekick on the way down.  The weather is bad.  Had the Drug Service Meeting at the Astor Hotel.  It lasted until 10 P.M.  Visited the Spa for a few drinks and took the midnight train home.  Came up with Ed Schmalz from Appleton.
08.  Friday: Roy J. Grady 40, passed away at Mercy Hospital tonite at 8 o’clock.  He was taken there Monday with a ruptured appendix.  An emergency operation failed to save him.  He was born in Albany N.Y. May 10 -1894
09.  Saturday: When to confession for a change.  Tried Father Haehn.  He is exceptionally good in the confessional.  Had a haircut from Herman Jansen.  Business is not so good in the barbershops these days.
10.  Sunday: Holy Name Easter Duty today.  Had a very fine turnout.  Worked most of the day visited with the Heips a short time during the afternoon.  Took Norman Brown over to the Konrad funeral home to see for the last time our friend Raymond Grady.  Mrs. Katherine Mueller 1131 Bismarck passed away tonite at 7.30.  She was the mother of Otto Mueller, Guard at Waupun Prison
11.  Monday: Three armed men held up the W. T. Grant Store this morning about 8:20 just about the time the store was opened for business. They got away with about 1300 dollars. Father Coughlin makes a stirring reply to General Hugh Johnson, former N.R.A. Administrator, over the radio.  Ray Grady services this afternoon at the Konrad funeral home. He is laid to rest at New London in Floral Hill Cemetery.
12.  Tuesday: Frank Rosch is elected to the Chief of Police of Menasha provided he passes a physical examination.
13.  Wednesday: Ann Baier still has her cold and is not much better.
14.  Thursday: Harvey Plashko, our delivery man, has a birthday.  He is 24 today.  Frank Rosch fail to pass the physical examination needed to qualify him as chief of police of Menasha.  The Report of the Physician came in to the commission just as Frank was about to assume charge of his duties.
15.  Friday: Attended meeting of the Red Crosse Executive Body.  Election of members took place.  I was re-elected for another year.  Election of officers is to take place next Friday.
16.  Saturday: Today turns out to be a day of rain and sleet.
17.  Sunday: Saint Patrick’s Day.  Attended 6 Oclock Mass, then down to work, visited at Anna Drexler’s during the afternoon.  Harry and Agnes Kujawa and the baby are over from Berlin.  The weather is not so good this morning but it clears during the afternoon.  Worked until 8.30 in the evening.
18.  Monday: Took a ride to Fond du Lac tonite with Harold Mueller on business to see Mr. Abram advertising man for “Friendly 49” Ed Worm is there also.  On my arrival home where the sad news that Kate Kriz had passed away about 7.30 in the evening.  She was over to our house last week Monday afternoon, and played cards with Thres Tuesday.  She was born in Oshkosh Aug. 15 – 1880.  Married to Rud Kriz June 16 – 1908.  She was a sister to Matt –Jake – Ann –Margaret – Mame – Loretta and Gertrude Klemmer, and also Henry Klemmer.

21.  Thursday: Attended the funeral of Kate Kriz this morning. Had members of the 'Fortnight Jollies' a sheephead club of which she was a member in my car.
22.  Friday: Margaret Drexler has a birthday.  She is 27.  Uncle John Drexler also has one, he is 60.
23.  Saturday: Joe Hemmer is out celebrating today.  He has quite a time at Dick Doman’s.
24.  Sunday: This is my all day Sunday.  Attended six Oclock mass and work the rest of the day.  Visited John Drexler just long enough to wish him a happy birthday and lick up some of his home brew.
25.  Monday:
26.  Tuesday: Had lunch with Mr. Mueller at the Kiwanis Club.  Mr. Richardson the Masury Man is also a guest.
27.  Wednesday: Leopold Schmutzer 64 who formerly operated a store at 7th & Knapp Sts. passed away yesterday afternoon at Mattoon at his farm home.  Born in Bavaria 1870.
28.  Thursday: Al Hardt “Lilly Representative” is in town.  Had lunch with him, Syl Bludau and Ed Lange at the Athearn.  Ed Worm, his wife, also Mr. and Mrs. Ed Lange and Al Hardt are over in the evening.  Took them over to the Silver Grill at the Hay Hotel.
29.  Friday:
30.   Saturday: Frank Beck dropped in to see me today.  He was here for the Leopold Schmutzer funeral.
