Diary of Alfred E. Potter October, 1943

01.  Friday: Breakfast at Lander’s.  Then over to “Doleith Company,” had an interesting interview with Mr. Jos. Patten.  He is the owner of Doleith.  Then over to J. Hag Company on Madison Street.  Stopped at Illinois Brier Pipe Co. without success.  Then over to the hotel to check out and we are on our way back to good old Wisconsin.  Stopped at Carl and Margarets on our way.  The baby is fine and growing.  Stopped at Slinger for a bite to eat.  I got within 3 quarters (25¢ Ea.) of a 21 dollar jackpot, and then for home.
02.  Saturday: Back on the job this morning and my desk is piled high with work.  I hear Friday morning was a bad one for Ann Weisheipl.  “Tiny Hill’s” band was in town Thursday night at Eweco, and a friend of Ed’s by the name of Anderson helps him celebrate.
03.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns, worked from 820 to 1220. Took a trip to St. Nazianz to see Donald.  We took along Mr. and Mrs. Fred Karst and Aunt Mary.  The boys are fine.  We find Herman Drexler, Mrs. Wenz Putzer, Annie Sippl, and the Stadtmuellers are also there.  Met Father Gregory – Father Bernard and Bro. Brendon.  Back home at 7 P.M. after a fine supper back to work until 930 P.M.
04.  Monday: Laurence Churchill is back at the North Store.  Marion Fretchel leaves today for California.  Father Aloys Bastian is at Mercy Hospital, where he is being treated for a bad cold.  Butter is now up to 16 ration points per pound.
05.  Tuesday: [T] Our lovely weather is keeping up.
06.  Wednesday: Took advantage of the nice weather.  Took Ed Fretchel along to the cottage, drained the water tank and took out the dock.  I made a wild goose chase to town for the cottage keys.
07.  Thursday: Dr. Ray Wagner leaves for Carlyle Barracks Pennsylvania.  After six weeks he is to be assigned to Fitzsimmons hospital Denver Colorado.

09.  Saturday: Harry McEvoy is laid to rest.  Services at St. Johns.
10.  Sunday: Drove to Milwaukee this morning after attending 730 Mass at St. Vincents with Holy Name Society.  Thres and Mary Ann are with me, arrived about noon.  Carl, Margaret, Ann were happy to see.  About 130 we drove to St. Anthony’s church where little “Gael Ann” is baptized.  Mrs. Roman Antkoski and myself are godmother and godfather.  Had dinner at Heineman’s, after dinner bade the folks goodbye and drove to “Riverside theatre.  “Larceny with Music” features Allan Jones and Kitty Carlisle and Brittons crazy band was there.  Back home at midnight.  Joe Baier and Emma Nigl are married four years today.  Rose Weisheipl has a birthday, she is 32.                  Com.  Harry McEvoy
11.  Monday: Don’t feel so well today.  Seems to be a complication of ailments.  New York Yankees win the World Baseball Series from the St. Louis Cardinals.  New York won 4 games – St. Louis 1 game.
12.  Tuesday: Had Ed Fretchel over to take off screens.  Walter Patri is appointed district Attorney by Judge Henry Hughes.  He takes the place of John Moore was will leave a Thursday for service with the U.S.A.  Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hagene observe their golden wedding anniversary today.  Henry was born Feb. 9 – 1870, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hagene.  Mrs. Hagene was Ida Zick born Mar. 28 – 1869.  Taught school at Grace Lutheran.  Their children Karl – Edgar Hagene and Mrs. Lauren Sheets.
13.  Wednesday: Wash windows on the outside of the house and then put on the winter storms and its just in time.  It looks like our nice weather is coming to an end.  We had about 3 weeks a very mild days.  After the job I had to lay down for the rest of the day.  I’m still feeling much under the weather.  Had a letter from Donald today.  Italy declares war on Germany.  She was formerly Germany’s ally.
14.  Thursday: Took Mary Ann for her first treatment by Mrs. O’Day at the Visiting Nurses Association building.
15.  Friday: Started our furnace fire for the winter, this evening.  It is turning suddenly colder.
16.  Saturday: Mary Ann gets another treatment this morning.  Took Mary Ann and Thres to the Oshkosh Theatre.  “So Proudly we hail” with Claudette Colbert – Paulette Goddard – Victoria Lake and Sonny Tufts.  When “Henry Aldrich Swings it” with Jimmy Lyddon is picture number two and a good one.
17.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns.  To work at 815 until 115.  A beautiful day but quite cold.  This afternoon took a ride to Sacred Heart Cemetery with Thres and Aunt Mary.
18.  Monday: [T] Hattie Petzold Mueller, Naomi’s mother has a birthday.  Born Oct. 18 – 1880.
19.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  A very interesting technicolor picture by Bell Aircraft Corporation showing the manufacture of airplanes was on the program.  Our table Gene Vogel –Archie Gifford –Ray Barandoll – Frank Sullivan.  Carl Pfeiffer begins working at South Store.
20.  Wednesday: A busy day with directors of the chamber of commerce.  Out for additional memberships.  Well I didn’t go so hot, altho I added one membership at “Pipkorns.” Had a swell dinner at the Athearn tonite and met with the four new directors Morris Bell –Dan Harmon –Francis Lamb – Warren Coe. Jerry L’Estrange is elected president for the ensuing year –Ray Kivell, Vice Pres.  Thres plays cards at South Side Business Mens Auxiliary.  Ben Bernie, the old maestro, passed away this morning in Calif.  Born in Bayonne N.J.  52 years ago in a family of 12.

23.  Saturday: Well, I find myself with lots of ambition tonite, so I clean up the basement at our house and it needed it badly.
24.  Sunday: This is Aunt Mary’s birth date, and what a birthday, she is 70.  Took her and Aunt Lena to Mt Calvary to the St. Lawrence College students chicken dinner and Bazaar.  A fine dinner and a well attended Bazaar.  I won a bottle of wine.  Met Father Gerald Walker, Rector also Father Lawrence, Father Raphael.  Showed the folks around the students chapel and the church.  In the evening Annie Heip – Lena – Thres Fretchel are all at our house to celebrate, and they sure did.  Annie Heip was really well organized, and the folks sure had a good time, And Mary said it was her best birthday.  Party broke up at 2 A.M. and I have to chauffeur the ladies home.
25.  Monday: Grandpa Fretchel also had a birthday yesterday.  He is  ___. I stopped today to congratulate him.  Randal Yancy (Barbara) is 34 today and Uncle Sam has him.  He passed as exam Saturday, and so did Elmer Salzieder our delivery service man.  Met Father Bastian and told him my dream where he preaches a long sermon, instead of the parishioners falling asleep, he himself falls asleep while preaching.

30.  Saturday: Took Mary Ann and Thres to the Strand.  Bob Hope and Betty Hutton star in “Lets Face It” Warren Williams as the “Lone Wolf” stars in “Passport to Suez.”

31.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns, then to work.  Thres takes Ed and Robert Fretchel to the cottage to put on the storms.  Robert hunts but is not lucky.  Mikey (the dog) has quite a day.  Mary Ann has a Halloween Party tonite.  Dolores Kinateder –Rosemary Koelbl –Virginia Binder –Ruth Andrashk, June Karl Lorraine Wolf and Nancy Neustifter are present.  I visited Anton Pable at Sunnyview this afternoon.                        Com.  Stanislaus Jarosch

Diary of Alfred E. Potter September, 1943

01.  Wednesday: We attend the County Fair, Oshkosh Day turns out to be a lovely day.  Took Aunt Lena Baier with us.  The races are very good and the acts are excellent.  Had supper at the 10th St. M. E. tent.  Met Harry – Agnes – Johnny – Mary Kujawa after supper, also Rose –Marion Weisheipl.  I got myself a job holding Johnny and Mary on the fence, to give them a good view of the evening acts.  Stopped at Pete King’s for lunch, on the way home.  Beat Thres two games of cribbage and by the way, Thres seems to have lost all her luck in cribbage.  She has won only two of the last 15 games.

03.  Friday: To 7 Oclock Mass at St. (Johns) Vincents.  Mary Ann and Katherine Mueller are indisposed today, probably too much fresh fruit, for too much mixture.                       Com.  Donald – Mary Ann
04.  Saturday: Took Ed Fretchel to the cottage this afternoon.  Did some fishing, lost a good anchor, caught seven good size perch and sunfish and plenty small ones.
05.  Sunday: To St. Johns 730 with Mary Ann. Thres has been trying to buy butter, tried 3 places, no luck, one grocer informs her there is no butter available in the city. Took Thres Fretchel and Annie Heip along to the cottage. It's a lovely day. While the ladies played cards, I varnished our boat. Well from 845, the ladies engaged me at cards and it lasted until 2.45 A.M. and then a lunch. I get to rest at 345 A.M.
06.  Monday: Wake up about 530 with a severe storm breaking. Much lightning and thunder. Thres Fretchel and Annie are very much scared. I got up at 10.15 to find the ladies at breakfast. The Kearns Utah military band is on for a half hour concert over the radio. The broadcast comes in very good. Cork “George” Weisheipl plays with this band. I cut grass and do some cleaning up. Gregory Ilk and his mother Mary come out about 2 Oclock with Ed Fretchel. We then had our dinner. More cards while I take a nap until 515. I get into the game until 815 then we pack up and go home. Ed Fretchel stays at the cottage.
07.  Tuesday: The weather is much cooler today.  Tony Pable is taken to Sunnyview Sanatorium today.  He has been ailing for some time.
08.  Wednesday: Out in Europe things are happening.  Italy has surrendered to the Aloys.  Armistice is the active as of today 10 A.M. and the surrender is unconditional.  Out to the cottage this afternoon, to bring some eats to add Fretchel.  He is thoroughly disgusted and instead of eats, he wants to go home, and home I take him.  Took Mary Ann to Time theatre tonite.  “Louisiana Purchase” with Bob Hope –Vera Zarina –Victor Moore.  “Cairo” with Robert Young and Jeanette MacDonald.  I saw both of these before, they were worth seeing again

12.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns and then wrote orders until 1 P.M.  Took Donald back to St. Nazianz this afternoon.  Quite a number of students are back.  Father Dennis (Dean) tells us that 170 students are registered.  They have had to make a study hall and dormitory out of the museum.  Normal capacity at the seminary is 150.  On the way back stopped at Millers in Chilton for a plate of eats.  Also stopped at Dana Worm’s Fond du Lac, home at 9 P.M.  Then over to Fretchel’s to help Ed celebrate his birthday.  He is a 58.  Joe and Annie Heip are there.  Home at 130 A.M.  Won 75 cents.
13.  Monday: The Kujawas from Berlin bring back Romy and Lonie, they will be leaving sometime tonight for home at Milwaukee.  Harry Lyman has a birthday.  I think he is 74, but he surely does not look it.  He would easily pass for 60.

18.  Saturday: “Tommy” the pet of our house for many years is becoming very feeble.  He is so weak we must help them up stairways and into the bath tub to take his drink of water.  His weight has gone from 15 pounds to barely 3 pounds.  Thres –Mary Ann and self attend the Oshkosh “Dixie” in Technicolor features Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour.  “Alaska Highway” features Richard Arlen –Jean Parker.
19.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns then to work until 115 P.M.  Had company this evening Ed and Thres Fretchel and Joe and Annie Weisheipl.  Played 5 hand sheephead as usual.  Took Joe to work at 11.45 P.M. the rest of the folks stayed until 1 A.M.

21.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis Luncheon with Dave Collin.  Our table Max Korn – Abe Kagan –Dave Collin –Frank Fraker.  Movies of the African campaign after lunch.  Meeting of Finance Committee Chamber of Commerce at 3 P.M.  Present: Ray Kivell – Erwin Spoo – Gerald L. Estrange – Jim Cudlip and myself.
22.  Wednesday: “Tommy” has his last meager breakfast and drink in the bath tub this morning, he purred away almost to the last.  His gentleness and understanding will never be forgotten by us.  He was loved by our neighbors, and would even go into their homes and enjoyed a friendly visit and a bit of lunch over to him.

26.  Sunday: To 730 Mass “St. Johns” then to work from 830 to 115 P.M.  Carl Radomsky drops in on his way to Milwaukee from Berlin for his hunting with Harry.  He has some car trouble on the way.  Herb Mugerauer is home on furlough.  He and Joe and Matt Drexler dropped in for short visit this afternoon.  Took Annie Weisheipl – Thres – Mary Ann two Oshkosh tonite.  “Hit the Ice” features Bud Abbott –Lou Costello –Ginny Simons – Johnny Long orchestra.  It was our roar from beginning to end.  “Someone to Remember” is a lovely picture story.

28.  Tuesday: [T] Left for Chicago with Thres at 11.25 A.M. on business, arrived in Chicago at 330 took until 400 oclock to find the Palmer House.  We find a nice double room with two bathrooms reserved for us, on the 23d floor.  Had dinner at Palmer House Café 358 then Blackstone Theatre “Goodnight Ladies” with Skeets Gallagher and Stewart Irwin 780 Landers for a few beers .60 then to our room 1 Ginger Ale to our room only 111, very reasonable “ouch.”
29.  Wednesday: Breakfast at Lander’s, then to Merchandise Mart to see the War Labor Board “Stabilization Unit for Wages.  Thres did some shopping.  After Lunch drove out to United Drug Company, bought quite a number of critical items from Henry Apida.  Thres visited with Al Bouchelle and Fred Wimber.  Drove back to the Palmer had supper then to the Oriental Theatre “Honeymoon Lodge ” is on.  Shep Fields and Orchestra put on quite a show.  After the show a sandwich and beer at the “Wonder Bar” completes the day.
30.  Thursday: Had quite a wait for my car from the garage, but make the United Wholesalers meeting by a few minutes. Messrs. Griffing – Sammons – and Richards are here from Boston.  Had lunch at the Central Manufacturing District Club.  Thres did some shopping mall on I was gone, in fact she almost got lost.  I got back late in the afternoon.  In the evening we attended Woods Theater featuring Robert Donat as “Young Mr. Pitt.” Almost forgot to mention that we had a wonderful dinner at “Pelligrins.” Phil Lyman is 37 today.

Diary of Alfred E. Potter August, 1943

01.  Sunday: [T] We have company at the cottage Joe - Emma - Joe - Faye Baier, William - Rose - Joann - Billy - Barbara Mauritz, Ray - Ann - Raymond - Jimmy Ostertag, also Aunt Lena Baier spent the day with us. Joe, Bill, Ray, and myself did some fishing toward evening, caught 18 good sized perch and 16 smaller ones. My first experience fishing with grubs; they sure make good bait.
02.  Monday: Had a peculiar spell of weakness come over me tonite.  Had to lay down for short time and felt better.
03.  Tuesday: [N] Mary Ann visits with the Mauritz and Ostertag children.  I’m not feeling so well today.  My right leg is out of control also my right hand is numb.
04.  Wednesday: To Dr. Ray Wagner for a physical examination.  Well he doesn’t find anything radically wrong, says my consuls are bad, says I may have what is called “Deetle’s Crisis” and may pass over within a week.

06.  Friday: To St. Vincents 7 Oclock Mass.  A beautiful service for first Friday.                Com.  Donald – Mary Ann
07.  Saturday: Took Ed and Thres Fretchel – of Annie Weisheipl – Thres –Mary Ann to the Strand.  “Du Barry was a Lady” features Red Skelton – Lucille Ball – Gene Kelly –Virginia O’Brien and Tommy Dorsey orchestra.  A technicolor picture, full of comedy, Squadron Leader X with Eric Portman, Ann Dvorak, a spy picture is also good.
08.  Sunday: Thres and I are married 32 years today. To 730 Mass at St. Johns, then to work until 115 P.M.  Yack spells of weakness today.  Ed – Thres Fretchel and Anna Weisheipl send a presence.  This evening Lena Baier – Thres Fretchel –Anna Weisheipl are over for a game of cards.  It was nice to have Thres’ 3 sisters – Lena – Annie – Mary with her.  The folks stayed until 130 A.M.                Com.  Thanksgiving Wedding Anniversary
09.  Monday: Father John Nuernberg dropped in at the store this morning.  He is looking the picture of health, weighs 230 pounds, but states he still is bothered with a tumor on his bladder.  Donald back from the cottage this afternoon.  He took three of his friends.
10.  Tuesday: Thres and Mary Ann move back to the cottage.  Mary Ann takes Carol Steinert along for a day.  “Kiwanis” picnic at Menominee Park.  Our family was not there.  I donated prizes, as a member of the program committee.
11.  Wednesday: Rudolph Kriz City Controller is at Mercy Hospital for observation.  He has a toxic goiter, which is grown on to his windpipe.
12.  Thursday: Bob Brand has a birthday, he is 58, hole and hearty. Corky (George) Weisheipl blows into town tonite. He came to Chicago with a troop train.
13.  Friday: Saw Angie Kriz today, she tells me her dad is fair.  Paul Jungen is home on furlough from Fort Reno.  He drops in to see me tonight at the store.  Marion Weisheipl has a birthday.
14.  Saturday: We get the sad news this morning that Rudolph Kriz passed away last night and very suddenly at Mercy Hospital.  He was born Jan 23 – 1881 in Hungary.  Came to Oshkosh in 1890 – of began working to Paine’s at 12.  Worked there for 40 years.  Elected city comptroller in 1933 by a margin of 46 votes.  Was controller ever since, now serving his sixth term.  Married Kate Klemmer in 1907 – she passed in 1935.  Out to Bill Mauritz to look at the boat.  The ribs are in.  Had a letter from Lony in Milwaukee.  Visited with Father Bastian this afternoon after confession.  He is much grieved over the passing of Rud Kriz.            Three M.O. 15.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass at St. Vincents, then to work.  Took Thres Fretchel – Lena Baier, Thres – Mary Ann to Fiss & Bills to view the remains of Rud Kriz.  Took Ed and Thres Fretchel along to the cottage this evening.  Margaret Mueller Troy is getting out of bed.            Com. Rud Kriz
16.  Monday: Attended Rosary for Rudolph Kriz tonite.  Donald takes Bobby Llewellyn along to the cottage as his guest.  Paid a few bills today and made a few donations.  Ed Fretchel trims trees at the cottage.  This is a fine day for such work, rather cool.  George Weisheipl has a birthday.  I think he’s 34.                   M.O. to Rev. 17.  Tuesday: [T] Last rites for Rudolph Kriz at St. Vincents.  Pallbearers Greg Sitter –Ed Binder –John Ludwig – Joe Plier – John Kubasta and myself.  Solemn Requiem – Father Bastian, assisted by Fr. McKeough and Trebidowski.  In the sanctuary Fathers Leo Ott – Leo Courtney –Anthony Baier – Lambert Scanlon –Henry Scholter – _____ Pimiskern.  Attended Kiwanis luncheon Frank Keefe “Congressman 6th District” is our guest speaker.  Frank is a charter member of the Oshkosh Kiwanis.  Dave Bent is in town.  His birthday also, “Mary” made him a blueberry pie.  I had some two
18.  Wednesday: Took Lena Baier along to the cottage.  Had Donald and Bobbie Llewellyn help me clean up the Shore this afternoon.  Bill and Emm Siewert come out this afternoon.  Harry – Agnes – Mary – Johnny Kujawa from Berlin come over tonite.  Bill and Emm – Lena stay overnite.  A five handed game of sheephead yielded only grief to Bill Siewert.
19.  Thursday: Wrote a letter to Carl Fretchel tonite.  I hope he gets it.  Also to Leona and the folks in Milwaukee.
20.  Friday: [T] Thres – Lena – Mary Ann move back to town.
21.  Saturday: Harold Spanbauer passed away last night at 700 at Mercy Hospital.  Had some kind of intestinal ailment.  Born June 15 – 1907.  Worked with Minnie Kuehl Studis for four years.  Parents Mr. and Mrs. John Spanbauer.  Visited the Weisheipls with Thres and Ed Fretchel this evening.  Took Joe Weisheipl to work at 11.40 P.M.
22.  Sunday: Joe Weisheipl Jr. is 36 years of age today.  Took Aunt Mary a long to view the remains of Harold Spanbauer.  Took Joe and Annie Weisheipl and Ed and Thres Fretchel for a Theatre party at the Strand.  “This is the Army” is the picture in technicolor featuring Ronald Reagan and Joan Leslie.  Music and Lyrics by Irving Berlin.  Kate Smith Sings “God Bless America.” Also showed Yip – Yip –Yaphank from 1918.  After the show to Pete King’s for refreshments, it took Joe Heip to work at 11.15 P.M.                    M.O.  Harold Spanbauer
23.  Monday: [2M] Laurence Churchill begins working at the Axle.  Dr. Bob Mathwig drops in at the store to say good bye.  He goes to Carlyle Pennsylvania four 6 weeks training, then to Camp Forrest Tenn.  Had a conference with Ed and Rose Weisheipl at their home today.  Naomi Mueller is on her vacation this week.  Rose Weisheipl has supper with Art Mueller.  Art took Margaret out for her first auto ride yesterday, since she has been laid up.
24.  Tuesday: [T] Thres is out to Henry Siewert cottage today with Business Mens Auxiliary.  Mary Ann visits with Joan Mauritz for the day, and decides to stay for the night.
25.  Wednesday: Mary Ann gets a half – permanent at South Side Beauty Shoppe.  Thres back to the cottage this afternoon, takes Joe and Annie Weisheipl along.  This is the first time Joe could spend any length of time at the cottage, this year.

29.  Sunday: [T] To 730 Mass at St. Johns. Viewed the remains of Howard Wickert at Konrad Funeral Home. Harvey Wickert, his dad sure takes his passing to heart. Back to the cottage this afternoon. Joe Emma Baier and children, Lena, Ray Ostertag - Ann - and children, Bill Mauritz and children. Had to jump in the lake with my clothes on after supper. Faye Baier started drifting out in to the lake, after one of the children had loosed the boat rope and let go. She was pretty well scared when I pulled the boat in. Harry - Agnes - Johnny - Mary came from Berlin about 8 P.M.
30.  Monday: Harry Ferry is in town, took him out to see Art Muellers victory garden.
31.  Tuesday: Winnebago County Fair opens today, and it rained plenty this morning. To Kiwanis luncheon took Don Bludau and Hugh Duffy (Scholl) along.  Dr. A.C. Gifford and Dave Collins also at our table.  No program.  Joe Kitz almost had one for us. Theresa Bruechmiller laid to rest this morning.  Thres takes Alvina Putzer – Anna Weisheipl – Lena Baier.

01.  Thursday: My duties as clerk of postal station No. I officially begin today.

03.  Saturday: No rest for the wicked, I had to work until after 10 oclock tonite to complete my work.  Ordinarily I do not work Saturday afternoon and evening during summer. To seven oclock Mass at St. Vincents.  Edward Weisheipl and Marge (Haverty) Weisheipl go to Great Lakes to visit Joe Jr.                   Com.  Catherine Holzbauer
04.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. John, then to work until 1 P.M.  Took Ed – Thres – Robert – Grandpa Fretchel, and Weisheipl to the cottage.  Mary Ann has Carol Steinert as house guest.  “Mickey” Marion Fretchels dog went along too.  It turns out to be a lovely day.  The women as usual play sheephead until 130 A.M.  Harry – Agnes – Mary and Jennie Kujawa drive over from Berlin 40 evening.  When Harry is not busy at the Bank, he works in the pea cannery.               Com. 05.  Monday: Not much activity today.  I get up late this morning.  Ed and Bob Brand went out fishing but caught nothing.  Ed and I tried toward evening, also nothing doing.  Robert Fretchel hitch hiked to town tonite.  Annie Heip also had to go to town because those small children from 24 to 32 years of age would not wake up in time to go to work in the morning.  I couldn’t very well make a special trip so she had to stay over night.  Played sheephead until midnight.  The quarter beer is gone too.
06.  Tuesday: Back on the job this morning.  Everything turned out OK at the Weisheipls, Rose made breakfast for Matt and everybody got to work on time.  Joe Sr. said she could stay a month, they would get along OK.  This afternoon Alois Mugerauer – Esther and children Judy – Marlene and Nancy come out to stay with us over Wednesday.  Thres attended South Side Business Mens Auxiliary Ladies picnic at Morgans.
07.  Wednesday: Spent an afternoon of rest today and so did the Mugerauers, it turned out a lovely day not too hot.  The folks tried fishing this morning, no luck.  Naomi Mueller takes a day off, goes fishing in Lake Winnebago
08.  Thursday: Naomi is much sunburned today. This is about all she caught yesterday, no fish. Donald worked his first full day at the store, put in 11 ½ hours and he sure was tired tonite. Took Matt Weisheipl to the cottage tonite.
09.  Friday: Received a letter from Carl Fretchel today from New Caledonia.  It was mailed June 16th and sent via Air Mail.  I think regular mail travels faster than that.  He received the harmonikas I gave to Ed to send him.
10.  Saturday: Matt Weisheipl and myself do a little fishing and then we go bathing at the sand dock.  This is my first swim in the lake this year.  Back to town tonite.  Matt’s vacation is about over.
11.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns then to work.  To the cottage this afternoon.

13.  Tuesday: Its a terribly hot day and I did not go to Kiwanis luncheon.
14.  Wednesday: Took Aunt Lena Baier – Ed and Thres Fretchel along to the cottage this noon.  Its a lovely day not too hot but the lake was rough.  Ed and I tried to fish, the anchors would not hold the boat.  The ladies got me for sheephead tonight and we play until 130 A.M. to bed at 2 A.M.  Thres Fretchel and Lena are bed partners and they surely had fun.
15.  Thursday: Jennie Miller –Mary Schneider Rose Miller – Anna Frank – Thres Kellerman –Clara Andrashko – Kate Duex – Emma Heppler – Anna Sippl – Ann Drexler (Mrs. John) – Annie Weisheipl and dog “Freckles” are out to the cottage for their annual outing.  Thres Fretchel comes out the evening.  When I come home tonite I find a few leftovers Thres Kellerman –Clara Andrashko – Thres Fretchel.  Their chauffeur did not come so they staid overnite.  Donald is up to 230 this morning, Father Ott has mass at 330.  After breakfast he takes Donald – Clarence Drexler and Melvin Karst to Sturgeon Bay.
16.  Friday: Donald came back last night about 10 oclock.  It was a swell day for an outing that the fish did not bite.  I brought Thres Fretchel back to town this morning.  Thres Kellerman and Clara Andrashko were taken home by Caroline Kellerman this afternoon about 4 o’clock.  Had quite a heavy rain this afternoon.  Thres moves back to town with Aunt Lena and Mary Ann.  Little Tommy Jr. is better today.  He was somewhat indisposed yesterday
17.  Saturday: Carrie Bauer has a surprise party on her dad tonight.  Joe and Annie Heip, Thres and myself are there with Joe Grabl and Clara – Louis and Mary Mauritz –Eddie Bauer and family.
18.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns then to work.  This afternoon took Thres and Mary Ann to the Strand.  “The Human Comedy” Featuring Mickey Roomy – Frank Morgan –Fay Banter and a Comedy “Yanks Ahoy” with William Tracy and Joe Sawyer.  This evening took Ed and Thres Fretchel along with our family to visit Mr. and Mrs. Mueller out at “Fahrnwald” Al Fuhs and Mrs. and Harold – Eva Mueller and kiddies are there.
19.  Monday: Had Harry Ferry over for the noon day meal.  Thres with much surprised and somewhat embarrassed.  Took Harry along to People’s Brewery and who should be coming along – Thres and Emma Siewert also after some beer.  Emma and Bill Siewert are with us at the cottage.  Played cards until 2 A.M.
20.  Tuesday: [T] The Ladies Auxiliary South Side Business Mens Club spend the day at the cottage.  John Bauer -743 -12th is 74 years of age today.  Donald Jungen also has a birthday today.  He is 17.
21.  Wednesday: Joe Weisheipl Jr. and Ed Fretchel Jr. and William Lange arrived home for furlough from Great Lakes.
22.  Thursday: The 740th Battalion U.S. Army Task Force is in the city with war equipment and about 800 men. They have mass at Menominee Park, a display on Main Street between Otter and Washington, parade at 6 P.M. and final program at Fair Grounds at 715 P.M. We all move to town for the doings with Emma and Bill having been our guests for the last few days.
23.  Friday: Frank Kimball –Joe Weisheipl Jr. and Donald spent part of the day at the cottage fishing – playing cribbage etc.

25.  Sunday: To St. John’s at 6 Oclock with Thres. after breakfast to work until 1 P.M.  Took Aunt Mary –Mary Ann and Thres to Riverside Cemetery this afternoon.  Matt the Nuernbergs with Joe and Margaret Hemmer out there.  Then to the South Park.  Ohio Street Merchants Picnic is on today.  Met plenty of folks we know.  Took Bill Mauritz and family home.  In the evening a ride to Menominee Park and then home.  News comes over the radio that “Mussolini” has resigned by request as Premiere of Italy.               Com.  “Happy hour of death.”
26.  Monday: Thres moves back to the cottage.  It is quite hot these days and not very pleasant in town.  Betty Hill is Mary Ann’s house guest.  Martial law is proclaimed thru out Italy.  King Vittoria Emanuele appoints Marshall Pietro Badoglio as premier to take Mussolini’s place.
27.  Tuesday: Arthur Hill Jr., Dick Hill, and Donald ride their bicycles from town to the cottage.
28.  Wednesday: Did some fishing with the boys this afternoon.  We got 10 good sized perch.  Art and Loretta Hill visit with us this evening.  They take Art junior back to town.  He must be on the job in the morning.
29.  Thursday: Dr. Norman Kleinschmit checks my teeth this morning.  No fillings this time.  Naomi Mueller enjoys Eddie Weisheipl’s lap this afternoon in my office, until I get there and spoil the fun.
