Diary of Alfred E. Potter January, 1943

01.  Friday: We all get up late today.  Thres and I attend 11.45 Mass at St. Johns.  Mrs. FW (Minnie) Mueller got an attack last night about 9 Oclock when was it first thought to be gallbladder trouble, but turned out to be appendicitis.
02.  Saturday: Busy getting the books of M.P.D. Co. in order.  Worked until 11.20 P.M.  Donald and Mary Ann attend All Star – Sheboygan game.  All Stars win.
03.  Sunday: Attend 730 Mass at St. Johns, then to work until 115 PM.  After dinner took Donald, Melvin Karst, Stadtmueller and Drexler to St. Nazianz back to school, also took Ten Stadtmueller along for company.  It was snowing when I left.  The roads were very icy, especially on the east side of Lake Winnebago.  Arrived there about 415.  On the way back run into a bad blizzard vision was very poor, arrived home safely at 630 and happy to be back.  Worked until 930, 6 ½ hours today.
04.  Monday: [2M N] Much snow fell overnight, in the fact 5 inches since Friday evening.  Today is a beautiful clear day the temperature is going down.  Thres plays cards of a Sim Menzels this afternoon Ladies Auxiliary So. Side Business Mens Club.  Mrs. Mueller is taken to Mercy Hospital this afternoon.  Annual Meeting of the Mueller Potter at our South Side Store.  Same officers as before.
05.  Tuesday: [N] Official temperature to 9° below this morning altho some thermometers register 14 below.  The 78th Congress convenes at Washington today.  Kiwanis Club today, we have meeting of our entertainment committee, Glenn Fadner – Gene Voge –Geo. Harrington
06.  Wednesday: To Chamber of Commerce Directors meeting at the Athearn this noon.  We made our Christmas visit at Ed Fretchels tonite.  Annie Weisheipl is with us.  Get home at 2 A.M. Thursday.  After tests and X Rays doctors find Mrs. Muellers gall bladder is not functioning.
07.  Thursday: [N] Karl Kiekhafer almost gives me a check for 2500 dollars on an endowment policy.
08.  [N]
09.  Saturday: Took Thres and Mary Ann to the Oshkosh.  “The Forest Rangers” in Technicolor with Fred Mac Murray – Paulette Goddard and Susan Hayward – Eugene Pallette and “Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch.”
10.  Sunday: Holy Name of the city receive Communion in a body at St. Vincents at 730 Mass.               Com.  Peace for the World
11.  Monday: Joe Weisheipl Sr. has a night out and Ed and Thres Fretchel, Ma Potter and myself make our holiday visit there.  We get home at 230 A.M. Tuesday.  I tuned in the radio and it is surprizing the number of stations on at this time of the morning.  One station was announcing and explaining pages from “You Cant do business with Hitler and Europe in Revolt another station “Frank the Diamond Man” was selling diamond rings.

13.  Wednesday: Matt and Geo. Mertz are in about barricading our drive back of the store.  Dr. Wm Wagner gives me a thorough medical exam.  Well Im still in pretty good shape.  Dropped in the Peacock with Karl Kichafer and met Joe Weisheipl Jr. and that was a surprize.  Temperature is at 6° below this morning.
14.  Thursday: [N] A pleasant surprise in the form of a letter from Ven Sister Virginia St. Johns Hospital, Tulsa Oklahoma.
15.  Friday: [N] Thres –Mary Ann – Anna Weisheipl visit at Joe and Emma Baiers tonite.  I come there after work, we play sheephead and stay until 1 A.M. Saturday.  Had my coupe so I took Annie Heip home before Thres and Mary Ann.  It was snowing and blowing out.  Carlson J. Kusche passed away this morning at 10.15.  He was a brother to Albert Kusche and Helen Broche.  Born Aug 15 – 1873.
16.  Saturday: The Oshkosh “All Stars” to eat the Sheboygan Red Skins tonite 49-46.  I would like to have seen this thriller.
17.  Sunday: Carl Fretchel phones his folks at 2 Oclock this morning from San Diego California that he is leaving the door and unknown destination.  2730 Mass at St. Johns.  Eddie McCullough, Lilly representative, is a proud papa today.  It’s a boy 8 pounds 5 ounces
18.  Monday: [N] This is a day of much snow and does in blizzard out.  Thres entertains some ladies of the South Side Business Mens Auxiliary.  Some of those present, Mrs. Harvey Zentner – Mrs. Kurt Zentner, Emma Siewert, Mame Siewert, Mrs. Walter Dodd, Mrs. Reed Haveman, Mrs. Const Lehnigk, Mrs. Mary Fenzl – Mrs. _____ Kalbus, Mrs. Ed Wurtz – Mrs. Herbert Nolte, Mrs. Oscar Schneider Mrs. Ed Binder, Mrs. Herman Jansen, Mrs. Ed Baranowski who subd. for Mrs. Sam Menzel
19.  Tuesday: [N] Well I walk to work this morning, it is only 13° below zero, and the walks are drifted over badly, and it gets colder during the day.  Mayor George Oaks is a 51 years old today.  Henry Botz, one of our fourteenth street neighbors now living at 324 – 11th St. passed away (today) yesterday Jan 18th at Mercy hospital after a short illness ending in meningitis.  Born in Cashton Wis. Dec 23 – 1890.  Survived by (Theresa Reichard) wife of and sons Gilbert – Donald and Stanley who is in New Guinea.
20.  Wednesday: [4M] It is 24° below zero this morning but warms up gradually during the day.  Anna and Leona Drexler are back from Milwaukee.  They came in yesterday afternoon.  They were gone about 3 weeks.
21.  Thursday: [7M N] Kate Smith is back on the radio today, and she is very happy.  A letter from Donald today.  He tells us the store is out of candy and so is his locker.  Homer Pipkorn, Pres of Pipkorn Fuel Company passed away at 12.15 noon today at Mercy Hospital.  He suffered from anemia on entering hospital and complications sent in.  Born in Granville July 9 – 1884.  Married to Lillian Heideman of Milwaukee Jan 25 – 1911.
22.  Friday: [2M N] I feel rather distressed today.  The weather has moderated considerably it is close to 40° this afternoon.  Joe Baier and myself took inventory in the basement today, and it is a pretty cold job, but it must be done.  Cook and Brown put in 2 ton of coal today.  We have used 5 tons to date.
23.  Saturday: My stomach is still on the bum, altho I feel somewhat better.  Punky Nigl is married one year ago today.  He celebrates at Club 41 tonite, with his chum Eddie Weisheipl.  Discovered error in our P O Insurance Book today.  Rose Weisheipl transversed figures from 4467 to 2267 on January 13th.  Error had not been noticed until I ran across it today, 142 packages were insured with duplicate numbers.
24.  Sunday: To St. Johns at 730 Mass.  Viewed the remains of Homer Pipkorn at Spikes and MacDonald.  Met Raymond Mottl there, who is home on a furlough from Mitchell Field New York.  Funeral services for Homer this afternoon from Masonic Temple.  Eddie Weisheipl is 25 years of age today.  He looks a little tough this morning, he and some of his friends start celebrating at midnight.
25.  Monday:[4M N] 4° below zero this morning.
26.  Tuesday: Received the sad news this morning that Father Alexis Gore, Director of St. Lawrence College for the last 10 years passed away at St. Agnes Hospital Fond du Lac Sunday January 24th.  Born at Yonkers N.Y.  Nov. 13 – 1894 ended Capuchin order April 22 – 1919 ordained a priest April 22 – 1919 R.I.P.  To Kiwanis luncheon, Glen Fadner, Charles Roeder, Sam Luchsinger at our table.  Temperature is 13° below this morning.  John Quade is very much put out about the gate back of our store.  A letter from Donald today.
27.  Wednesday: [2M] Father Victor Kandy is in today for short visit.  Karl Kiekhafer and Reiss from Milwaukee are here to deliver to me two life insurance policies 10000 and 3000.
28.  Thursday: [N T] Aunt Lena (Caroline) Baier is 66 years old today.  Thres –Mary –Annie, her sisters and daughters and grand children are there to help her celebrate.  I visited her in the evening, she tells me, she made 106 (gropfens) and she doubts if there are six left.  Delivered 27 Harmonikas to Grade 2 St. Marys School.  No harmonikas available at present.  Sister M. DE Pazzi is very much pleased gives me an identification folder with Sacred Heart Badge.
29.  Friday: [4M N] More snow today.  After some soft weather we need a little clean snow. Steude’s fur house has a fire tonite, with several thousand dollars of damage, caused mostly by heavy smoke.
30.  Saturday: Well I get a surprize this morning.  Hardly had my coat off when Rose Weisheipl asks me for raise, and then she cried.  I do not know what the crying was intended for but she’ll have her raise next Saturday as she had it coming the first pay day in February.  Thres and I attend Strand Theatre tonite.  “Keeper of the Flame” starring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, and “Eyes of the Underworld” starring Richard Dix, Lon Chaney Jr., Wendy Barrie and Billy Lee.
31.  Sunday: To St. Johns 730 Mass.  Annual report for 1942 given out.  Worked 8 ½ hours today.  We have much snow during the day, clearing toward evening.
