Diary of Alfred E. Potter August, 1943

01.  Sunday: [T] We have company at the cottage Joe - Emma - Joe - Faye Baier, William - Rose - Joann - Billy - Barbara Mauritz, Ray - Ann - Raymond - Jimmy Ostertag, also Aunt Lena Baier spent the day with us. Joe, Bill, Ray, and myself did some fishing toward evening, caught 18 good sized perch and 16 smaller ones. My first experience fishing with grubs; they sure make good bait.
02.  Monday: Had a peculiar spell of weakness come over me tonite.  Had to lay down for short time and felt better.
03.  Tuesday: [N] Mary Ann visits with the Mauritz and Ostertag children.  I’m not feeling so well today.  My right leg is out of control also my right hand is numb.
04.  Wednesday: To Dr. Ray Wagner for a physical examination.  Well he doesn’t find anything radically wrong, says my consuls are bad, says I may have what is called “Deetle’s Crisis” and may pass over within a week.

06.  Friday: To St. Vincents 7 Oclock Mass.  A beautiful service for first Friday.                Com.  Donald – Mary Ann
07.  Saturday: Took Ed and Thres Fretchel – of Annie Weisheipl – Thres –Mary Ann to the Strand.  “Du Barry was a Lady” features Red Skelton – Lucille Ball – Gene Kelly –Virginia O’Brien and Tommy Dorsey orchestra.  A technicolor picture, full of comedy, Squadron Leader X with Eric Portman, Ann Dvorak, a spy picture is also good.
08.  Sunday: Thres and I are married 32 years today. To 730 Mass at St. Johns, then to work until 115 P.M.  Yack spells of weakness today.  Ed – Thres Fretchel and Anna Weisheipl send a presence.  This evening Lena Baier – Thres Fretchel –Anna Weisheipl are over for a game of cards.  It was nice to have Thres’ 3 sisters – Lena – Annie – Mary with her.  The folks stayed until 130 A.M.                Com.  Thanksgiving Wedding Anniversary
09.  Monday: Father John Nuernberg dropped in at the store this morning.  He is looking the picture of health, weighs 230 pounds, but states he still is bothered with a tumor on his bladder.  Donald back from the cottage this afternoon.  He took three of his friends.
10.  Tuesday: Thres and Mary Ann move back to the cottage.  Mary Ann takes Carol Steinert along for a day.  “Kiwanis” picnic at Menominee Park.  Our family was not there.  I donated prizes, as a member of the program committee.
11.  Wednesday: Rudolph Kriz City Controller is at Mercy Hospital for observation.  He has a toxic goiter, which is grown on to his windpipe.
12.  Thursday: Bob Brand has a birthday, he is 58, hole and hearty. Corky (George) Weisheipl blows into town tonite. He came to Chicago with a troop train.
13.  Friday: Saw Angie Kriz today, she tells me her dad is fair.  Paul Jungen is home on furlough from Fort Reno.  He drops in to see me tonight at the store.  Marion Weisheipl has a birthday.
14.  Saturday: We get the sad news this morning that Rudolph Kriz passed away last night and very suddenly at Mercy Hospital.  He was born Jan 23 – 1881 in Hungary.  Came to Oshkosh in 1890 – of began working to Paine’s at 12.  Worked there for 40 years.  Elected city comptroller in 1933 by a margin of 46 votes.  Was controller ever since, now serving his sixth term.  Married Kate Klemmer in 1907 – she passed in 1935.  Out to Bill Mauritz to look at the boat.  The ribs are in.  Had a letter from Lony in Milwaukee.  Visited with Father Bastian this afternoon after confession.  He is much grieved over the passing of Rud Kriz.            Three M.O. 15.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass at St. Vincents, then to work.  Took Thres Fretchel – Lena Baier, Thres – Mary Ann to Fiss & Bills to view the remains of Rud Kriz.  Took Ed and Thres Fretchel along to the cottage this evening.  Margaret Mueller Troy is getting out of bed.            Com. Rud Kriz
16.  Monday: Attended Rosary for Rudolph Kriz tonite.  Donald takes Bobby Llewellyn along to the cottage as his guest.  Paid a few bills today and made a few donations.  Ed Fretchel trims trees at the cottage.  This is a fine day for such work, rather cool.  George Weisheipl has a birthday.  I think he’s 34.                   M.O. to Rev. 17.  Tuesday: [T] Last rites for Rudolph Kriz at St. Vincents.  Pallbearers Greg Sitter –Ed Binder –John Ludwig – Joe Plier – John Kubasta and myself.  Solemn Requiem – Father Bastian, assisted by Fr. McKeough and Trebidowski.  In the sanctuary Fathers Leo Ott – Leo Courtney –Anthony Baier – Lambert Scanlon –Henry Scholter – _____ Pimiskern.  Attended Kiwanis luncheon Frank Keefe “Congressman 6th District” is our guest speaker.  Frank is a charter member of the Oshkosh Kiwanis.  Dave Bent is in town.  His birthday also, “Mary” made him a blueberry pie.  I had some two
18.  Wednesday: Took Lena Baier along to the cottage.  Had Donald and Bobbie Llewellyn help me clean up the Shore this afternoon.  Bill and Emm Siewert come out this afternoon.  Harry – Agnes – Mary – Johnny Kujawa from Berlin come over tonite.  Bill and Emm – Lena stay overnite.  A five handed game of sheephead yielded only grief to Bill Siewert.
19.  Thursday: Wrote a letter to Carl Fretchel tonite.  I hope he gets it.  Also to Leona and the folks in Milwaukee.
20.  Friday: [T] Thres – Lena – Mary Ann move back to town.
21.  Saturday: Harold Spanbauer passed away last night at 700 at Mercy Hospital.  Had some kind of intestinal ailment.  Born June 15 – 1907.  Worked with Minnie Kuehl Studis for four years.  Parents Mr. and Mrs. John Spanbauer.  Visited the Weisheipls with Thres and Ed Fretchel this evening.  Took Joe Weisheipl to work at 11.40 P.M.
22.  Sunday: Joe Weisheipl Jr. is 36 years of age today.  Took Aunt Mary a long to view the remains of Harold Spanbauer.  Took Joe and Annie Weisheipl and Ed and Thres Fretchel for a Theatre party at the Strand.  “This is the Army” is the picture in technicolor featuring Ronald Reagan and Joan Leslie.  Music and Lyrics by Irving Berlin.  Kate Smith Sings “God Bless America.” Also showed Yip – Yip –Yaphank from 1918.  After the show to Pete King’s for refreshments, it took Joe Heip to work at 11.15 P.M.                    M.O.  Harold Spanbauer
23.  Monday: [2M] Laurence Churchill begins working at the Axle.  Dr. Bob Mathwig drops in at the store to say good bye.  He goes to Carlyle Pennsylvania four 6 weeks training, then to Camp Forrest Tenn.  Had a conference with Ed and Rose Weisheipl at their home today.  Naomi Mueller is on her vacation this week.  Rose Weisheipl has supper with Art Mueller.  Art took Margaret out for her first auto ride yesterday, since she has been laid up.
24.  Tuesday: [T] Thres is out to Henry Siewert cottage today with Business Mens Auxiliary.  Mary Ann visits with Joan Mauritz for the day, and decides to stay for the night.
25.  Wednesday: Mary Ann gets a half – permanent at South Side Beauty Shoppe.  Thres back to the cottage this afternoon, takes Joe and Annie Weisheipl along.  This is the first time Joe could spend any length of time at the cottage, this year.

28.  Saturday: Attended prayer for Theresa Bruechmiller at Poklasny Funeral Home.  Took Lena Baier and Thres to the Strand.  Feature picture “Hers to hold” Deanna Durbin –Joe Cotton – Charles Winninger “He hired to Boss” features Stewart Erwin –Evelyn Venable                  M.O. 29.  Sunday: [T] To 730 Mass at St. Johns. Viewed the remains of Howard Wickert at Konrad Funeral Home. Harvey Wickert, his dad sure takes his passing to heart. Back to the cottage this afternoon. Joe Emma Baier and children, Lena, Ray Ostertag - Ann - and children, Bill Mauritz and children. Had to jump in the lake with my clothes on after supper. Faye Baier started drifting out in to the lake, after one of the children had loosed the boat rope and let go. She was pretty well scared when I pulled the boat in. Harry - Agnes - Johnny - Mary came from Berlin about 8 P.M.
30.  Monday: Harry Ferry is in town, took him out to see Art Muellers victory garden.
31.  Tuesday: Winnebago County Fair opens today, and it rained plenty this morning. To Kiwanis luncheon took Don Bludau and Hugh Duffy (Scholl) along.  Dr. A.C. Gifford and Dave Collins also at our table.  No program.  Joe Kitz almost had one for us. Theresa Bruechmiller laid to rest this morning.  Thres takes Alvina Putzer – Anna Weisheipl – Lena Baier.
