Diary of Alfred E. Potter December, 1941

01.  Monday: [7M RNXHK] Ed Weisheipl and Ed Paulick are in Milwaukee to do some shopping.  Had to make a hurry trip to Berlin this afternoon to borrow some money from Harry at the Merchants Farmers Bank.  Thres has the ladies auxiliary of the South Side Business Mens Club here for cards.  Bridge and Sheephead are played.
02.  Tuesday: [9M RHXHK] Donald serves Mass at Sunny – View this morning at 6 Oclock.  Today is a beautiful day.
03.  Wednesday: [RHXHK] Thres and myself take a drive to Milwaukee, altho I do not feel any too well.  Leave at 945 stopped at Mutual Drug Company at 11.35 to see John Lange, then to Fritz Gust for luncheon, met Ambrose Grace.  After lunch to Yahr Lange Drug, Lester Heinzen waited on us, then to McClurgs, then to The Church Mart, and to Wis  DE Luxe Corporation, left for home at 5 P.M. driving is good and the weather warm, home at 645 and I feel terrible, fever 102 ½.  After a short time up I went to bed to take care of my cold.
04.  Thursday: [9M] Anna Weisheipl is laid up with a bad foot.  I’d took Aunt Mary out to do her housework.  Eddie and Rose Weisheipl have dinner with us.  Elizabeth Bohlson, our pharmacist clerk at the West Side Store was married last night to Al Samuel.  This is her second marriage.
05.  Friday: [7 RNXHK] Lena Baier does the housework for Annie Heip today.  First Friday, to Church at 7 A.M.  Temperature is up to 50° this morning.         Com.  Richard Reif Jr.
06.  Saturday: [7M RHXHK] My cold is no better.
07.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at SP St. Vincents.  This is a bad day for war news.  Japanese airplanes attack U. S Warships and Air Bases at Honolulu – Hawaii – Manila – Philippine Islands and Guam while Japanese representatives are in Washington to keep peace between us.  These envoys are astounded at the news.  Japan immediately declared war against United States and Great Britain.  About 3000 casualties are reported with 1500 dead.  I took Donald to see W. L. S.  Show at South Park Recreation sponsored by Ohio Vicinity Business Man.  This evening we had company Ed and Thres Fretchel, Joe and Annie Weisheipl are over, for a game of cards, and “standings.” (Home made head cheese)
08.  Monday: [8½M RHXHK] The United States declares war against Japan: Vote 470-1.  Others declaring work today, Great Britain against Japan, Honduras – Haiti – Costa Rica – Netherlands East Endies – Netherlands government in England all against Japan.  Lena Baier gets a telegram from St. Paul that Joseph Micko Sr. passed away suddenly at 2 A.M.
09.  Tuesday: [6M RHXHK] Took Lena Baier and Aunt Mary to Weisheipls to do their washing.  Annie is feeling fine, she tells us she was up at 6 A M and had already baked a loaf of rye bread.
10.  Wednesday: [7M RHXHK] Two of England’s mightiest fighting craft, “Prince of Wales” 35 000 ton battleship and the 32 000 ton battle cruiser “Repulse” are sunk by the Japs off Malaya.  They were sunk by air attack altho the “Prince of Wales” was supposed to be air bomb proof.
11.  Thursday: [1½M RHXHK] Germany and Italy declare war against United States today.  Our Congress and Senate declare war against these nations following notice of the declaration of war against us.

14.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. John’s, then to work.  Took a rest this afternoon, account of my cold.  Had Joe and Anna Weisheipl over for supper.  Joe and I do justice to a nice portion of venison, which Harry had given us about two weeks ago.

18.  Thursday: [5M RHXNK] This is a beautiful day, temperature at 46°.  My cold seems to be loosening a bit, but is still plenty bothersome.

21.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns, then to work, Worked all day.  We were very busy, especially in the postal department.  Waited on an average of 100 people per hour at the station.  This does not include stamp sales in the store.  Worked 13 ½ hours today.  Joe Baier as an attack of stomach sickness, and can not come to work.  Dr. Wagner hints that maybe a recurrence of stomach ulcers.  Martin Koeck –Bob Heideman – Harry Pokrandt, Art Mueller and myself comprised today’s crew.  Father Courtney calls our attention to our new kneelers at St. Johns.  They are surely comfortable, also a new Chalice, memory of Sarah Allen.
22.  Monday: [7M RHXNK] Joe Baier is back on the job this afternoon.  He does not feel so well, but hates to stay home.
23.  [3M RNXAK]
24.  Wednesday: [8½M RHXNK] Ed Weisheipl and myself delivered presents to the positions as usual every year.  Business is very good today.  Ed and Rose Weisheipl get a nice Christmas present from uncle Al, and are they happy, and so is their mother.  It has been raining all day since about midnight last night, lets up at 6 P.M.
25.  Thursday: Attended midnight Mass at St. Johns.  Out at 110 AM.  Joe Baier has another attack at 3 Oclock this morning.  Dr. Wagner has to make a hurry call to relieve his pains.  I went to work a little later this morning.  Worked from 10-12 1.00-600 630-745 8 hours 15 m.  After work we made a short visit to Weisheipl’s and from there to Mrs. John Drexlers for the rest of the evening.  Father Michael is here from Kaukauna.  Spent an enjoyable evening, played poker, made a singing record on a Philco, Got home at 100 A.M.
26.  Friday: [7M] The big rush is over and we’re back to normal at the store and home.  It is been snowing since one oclock this morning.  The snow is 24 hours late for all white Christmas.  Dr. Charles Behnke and wife Dorothy are in today to say hello.  View the remains of Mrs. Amanda Hein (Martha’s Mother) at Fiss & Bills.  Visited Joe Baier this evening, he is not so bad, but we’ll have to stay in bed a few days.          M.O. 28.  Sunday: To 6 Oclock Mass at St. Johns then to work.  Had to open the store this morning.  Worked until one, then Art Mueller relieved me until 6 Olock.  During the afternoon Joe – Celia – Lucy – Matt – Amanda - Caroline Drexler were over to our house for their annual Christmas Visit.  Sergeant George Hagene Jr. is in town. Laurence and Dolores sleep at our house tonite. After work tonite we visit the Weisheipls.  Ed and Thres Fretschel are also there.  Got home at 230 A.M. Monday.
29.  Monday: [3M RMFXHOK ROFXPOK] Eddie Weisheipl’s day off and I think he can stand it.  The last four nights for bad for him.  I could stand a night out, but no rest for the wicked.  When I came home from work tonite Leona and Roman Czekalski are over.
30.  Tuesday: [8½M RNXNK] Dropped in to see Joe Baier this afternoon.  He is still waiting to hear from Dr. Ray Wagner.  X Rays is having taken 3 times.  This afternoon Rose Mauritz, Billy –Joan – Barbara her children, Anna Ostertag her children Raymond – Jimmie, Emma Baier – Faye and Joe Jr, Lena Baier and Mrs. Anna Ostertag are here to spend the afternoon.
31.  Wednesday: [7M RAXMOK RMORK] Anna and Leona Drexler go to Milwaukee with Roman.  Rose and Eddie Weisheipl and myself have a pre–new year celebration in the Mueller Potter basement.  I work until 9 P.M.  Joe and Anna Weisheipl – Ed and Thres Fretchel are over for their annual new years celebration.  The party breaks up at 2 A.M. Ed Fretchel is very careful this year.  He might get sick like last year.
