Diary of Alfred E. Potter May, 1941

01.  Thursday: [RCXDK] Mary is ushered in with a beautiful day.  Temperature is again around the 80° mark.  Joe Weisheipl has a birthday, he is 57 years of age.  Any Weisheipl wins 6 dollars at the Eagles Bingo.
02. Friday: [RCXDK] Another lovely day.  Met with Earl Fuller this morning to arrange details for our annual meeting, Red Cross, which is to be May 13th.  First Friday, to Church at 7 A.M.  Attended Eagles Annual election of officers tonight.  Charles Gohsman, President William Chase –Vice Pres.  Walter Lenz – Chaplain, Marty Gummer Secretary, Le Roy Gilbert treasurer, Aerie Physicians Dr. J.F. 04.  Sunday: Father Peter Duerr has a birthday.  He is 30.  Martin Pesch who has been delivering for Henderson Hoyts for 20 years quit his job today.  Joe Jungen stock clerk at Kresge’s is leaving their today, to take a job with Montgomery Ward – Appleton.  Marion Weisheipl goes to Chicago for a few days to meet a girl friend and dancer.  Marion’s vacation begins she is to have two weeks with pay.
05.  Monday: Another hot day, temperature is 86° in the shade. Frank Drexler (1210 9th) begins working at South Side Wood and Coal Company office. Ed Sitzberger from New Mexico was in today to say hello, he has been gone 14 years. His mother is also here with him. Robert Lutz “Pres. Lutz Stone Company” passed away at 2 Oclock this morning at his home. Born March 27 - 1867. W.C. (Clyde) Springgate head of the Oshkosh Business College passed away at 11.55 A.M. today. Born Oct. 23 - 1878 at White Hall, Ill. He was secretary of the Oshkosh Kiwanis 8 years and twice president.
06.  Tuesday: [RJXDK] Another lovely warm day.  Little Katherine Mueller had a narrow escape from drowning in a lagoon at the Grandpa Mueller cottage on Farney’s estate.  Art Mueller, her dad, jumped in and rescued her.  The boys at the South Side Store begin their summer schedule, Joe Baier took his afternoon and evening out yesterday Art Mueller today.
07.  Wednesday: Robt Lutz is laid to rest.  Solemn Requiem at St. Johns.  Temperatures changed today, they are considerably lower.  Tonite about 50°.
08.  Thursday: [RNXDK] Albert Beck (grocer) has a heart attack during the night.  Mary Brandt (nee Blau) passed away last night 9.20.  Born in Bavaria Feb 8 – 1877.  Sister two Michael and John Blau.  Joachim Kurtz 915 Knapp died last night at Mercy Hospital.  Born 65 years ago in Germany.  Took a drive to Berlin to see Harry Kujawa at the bank.  Thres is along for the ride.  Rose Weisheipl has a cap put on one of her front teeth.  Had to build a fire tonight, temperature is 48°.  Thres plays Bingo at the Eagles wins nothing.  Jennie Miller wins $4.
09.  Friday: [RNXDK] Our Naomi Mueller has a date and who do you suppose with, Kenneth Kunde.
10.  Saturday: [RNXDK] Mary Brandt is laid to rest in Omro Junction Cemetery.  Mother gets Azalias from Dad for Mothers Day.
11.  Sunday: To Communion with Holy Name Society St. Vincents.  They attend in a body about 125 men.  A lovely day before Mothers Day.  I work 9 hours, called it a date at 10.30 P.M.
12.  Monday: [RCXDK] Ed Spees field director for American Red Cross is in town.  Ma Potter has her sheephead club over tonite.  Mrs. Baranowski –Mrs. Cater and Mrs. Al Barsch.

14.  Wednesday: Father Bastian gets back from his trip South this afternoon at 5 Oclock.
15.  Thursday: [RHXDK] A heavy rain and electrical storm about 4 oclock this morning.  Visited Grandma a Baier, she is doing fine.  Annual Red Cross meeting held in the lounge room of the Court House.  Ed Spees is here.  Earl Fuller is elected chairman to take my office.  I declined renomination, but am elected to executive board.

17.  Saturday: [RNXDK] Tom Gallagher leaves our employ tonite.  He is going to be office boy at Morgan Company for 15 dollars a week.  He received 18 from us.
18.  Sunday: To six Oclock Mass, Father Bastian is with us again.  Worked until 1 PM, then to K.C. Initiation at St. Mary’s.  Over 80 candidates take the 2nd and 3d Degree among them Jim Kinsler –Henry Kirk –John Plein -        Binder.  The Milwaukee Degree Team put on the third degree.  After work in the evening attended the movie “Perpetual Sacrifice” at the American Legion Club house.  Burt Salisbury was also there with a lot of his tricks.  Ended up at Fritz Weisheipls home at 115 A.M.
19.  Monday: [RHXDK] K. C. Convention (State) opens this morning. Thres takes in the ladies luncheon at Steins, plays cards with Mrs. Murphy Neenah - Mrs. Bothe, Fond du Lac. Took in K. C. Banquet in the evening at St. Marys. Bill Schaefer is toastmaster.
20.  Tuesday: [RHXDK] Knights Columbus Convention ends today.  Thres – Mary Ann and myself take a ride to the cottage after supper.  I have to try out our scythe after having Karl Kempinger sharpen it.  View the remains of Vernon Clark at Marquart Funeral Home after we got back from cottage.
21.  Wednesday: [RHXDK] Received and signed new Ins. Trust for Thres – Donald and Mary Ann with the New York Life Insurance Company, also contingent beneficiaries with C K’s – Foresters –New England Mutual and Metropolitan.  Attended Red Crosse Executive Committee Meeting.  First meeting with Earl Fuller, the new Chairman.  Halley Davies is chosen to be our executive Secretary.  Thres attends Red Cross Knitting Club this afternoon, at 630 she is at St. Vincents meeting at Father Bastians and after that at Sacred Heart Bazaar.  I took Donald to the cottage after supper, and we cut some heavy grass.

23.  Friday: [RAXDK] Anna and Leona Drexler go to Milwaukee this afternoon.  Leona is to be bridesmaid at a wedding there.
24.  Saturday: [RNXDK] Bought a new lawn mower today, a “Yard Man” 1500.  Has a five blades and does a good job.  Thres cleans and irons curtains and hangs them at the cottage, thats going some in one day.  Ada Kaerwer to a seven E.  Irving is granted a divorce this morning by Judge Henry Hughes, from Howard Kaerwer.  They were married June 29 – 1918 and have two children.  Mrs. Flora Samer granted a divorce from George C Samer.  Married Aug 10 – 1938 and separated March 1941.  The German warship Bismarck
25.  Sunday: To 730 Mass, then to work until 1 P.M. Took Donald to St. Lawrence College Mt. Calvary this afternoon. Father Lawrence celebrates his silver jubilee. Met Rev. Alexis Gore, the Rector of the College. There were many visitors. May Devotion at the Shrine of the Blessed Virgin, was very impressive. The Capuchin Fathers have a privileged Altar in their Chapel, which means a plenary indulgence every time a Mass is offered. Donald is very much impressed. Back to work at 4:45. Worked until 11 P.M. - 9 hours today. Thres plays Bingo at Sacred Heart Bazaar, she was also there this aft.
26.  Monday: [RAXDK] St. Vincents Congregation is trying the envelope system to raise funds. We receive ours today. Leona Drexler is back home and stays with us over night. I have her share Mary Ann's bed.
27.  Tuesday: [RNXDK] Lena Baier has a new furnace installed. It is a "Benefactor" price 159 dollars.
28.  Wednesday: Looks like a hot day coming up.  Temperature is up to 90° this afternoon.  Spent the afternoon at the cottage with Donald and Robert Fretchel.  They went swimming while I did some cleaning up.  In the evening we have a heavy electrical storm and much rain.  Our lights at home are out for about an hour.  Father Bastian has a birthday.  I think he is 67.  Leo Jungen becomes of age today.  He is now 21.  Little Lee Killilea of Omro is 10 years of age today.  She is quite a violinist, her Mother Margaret presents her with a new violin bow.
29.  Thursday: [RHXDK] Rather cold this morning.  Viewed the remains of Milton Pohlplatz this morning.  His parents and Roland feel much grieved, especially his dad.  Milton had been with him in business a good many years.  Matt Ball is in town.  We had a nice visit.  Father Bastian dropped in at the store this morning.  First time I had occasion to visit with him since his back from his vacation.  He is looking fine.  Visited Grandma Baier she is fair.
30.  Friday: [RNXDK] A very wet Memorial Day, no parade, rain most of the night.  I stayed in bed till 10.20 A.M.  Worked about 5 hours getting out orders.  Rose and Ed, Weisheipl are on duty today.  Rose has dinner and supper at Art Mueller’s.  The Muellers had good luck yesterday fishing, caught 8 nice pike.  We have company tonite Joe and Annie Heip, Thres Fretchel are over for a good game of sheephead.  Played 14 games, I did not win a game.  Ed Fretchel could not come, he was trimming trees this afternoon, and his foot began to swell.
31.  Saturday: Ed Fretchel is not on the job today.
