Diary of Alfred E. Potter October, 1942

01.  Thursday: [6M] Fuel Oil and Meat Rationing all over the United States begins today.  Coupon Books will be out Oct. 15th.  A Nationwide speed limit of 35 miles an hour on highways is also in effect today to conserve auto tires and tubes. President Roosevelt is back at the White House after an 8754 mile coast to coast inspection trip. He left Washington Sept. 27th and returned shortly after noon today. His itinery was kept a secret. Two happy papas in town today, Ray Novotny, post master a boy, the third child and Dr. Joe Kronzer, a boy, 5 boys and 2 girls for him.
02.  Friday: [10M] First Friday, to Saint Vincents Church at 7 A.M.  Harvey Wussow informs me that Rose Weisheipl issued an order for 2000 2¢ stamps on Sept 29th for $2000 and got away with it, until the error was discovered, when the postal department was short 20 dollars. Ed Fretchel tells me he is not feeling so well, he gets severe pains across the chest.       Com. Donald
03.  Saturday: [6M T] We’ve had a lovely week so far, all nice days, temperatures you she up to about 70°.  But Bill Glidden did not come to paint, he must be busy elsewhere.  Tonite however we have an abundance of rain.  Took a trip with F.W. Mueller this afternoon we stopped at _____ Pharmacy at Omro, from there to Barnetts Pharmacy Neenah, had a nice visit with Mr. Leffingwell, also met Don Bludau and his mother.  Hadn’t seen Mrs. Bludau for some time.  She looks well.  At home tonite – it is a very rainy and windy nite.
04.  Sunday: [2M] To 730 Mass at St. Johns, then to work.  We left at one oclock with Mrs. Frank Drexler and Betty Jane, Dolores and Aloys Kinateder for St. Nazianz.  Mrs. Drexler visited her grandson Aloys Jr. and we had a pleasant visit with Donald.  He likes school very much and is anxious to make his first retreat which begins Wednesday.  John – Matt and Carrie Bauer are there also, for a visit.  Stopped to see Ed Worm on the way back, picked up 4 Doz.  Gillette Razors.  Spent the evening working.                                  Com Kath Holzbauer
05.  Monday: [4M N] Frank J. Esslinger lost his wife Mary, yesterday morning at 745.  She has been ill with a heart ailment for years.  Born May 17 – 1893.  A son Daniel – a daughter Gloria survive her also her parents Mr. Mrs. Wenzel Baldu and 5 Brothers Pete – John – Frank –Edward and Joe.  The St. Louis Cardinals win the “World Baseball Championships” from the New York Yankees today.  They won 4 out of 5 games.  Ed and Rose Weisheipl won all the pools at the store.
06.  Tuesday: [6M N] Fred Baumgartner is 38 today.  Mary Esslinger is laid to rest. To Kiwanis luncheon, Carl Schmidt – Bart Heiss – Charles Roeder – Gene Vogel Gil Labudde, reporter and myself at table.  Community Chest is the topic, with representatives from various relief agencies present
07.  Wednesday: Another lovely day.  I leave a fruit salad this afternoon.  We drove to Winneconne and partook of Father Victor Kandy is fine chicken supper at the Winneconne City Hall.  We took Ed and Thres Fretchel along.  After the supper drove back to Oshkosh, attended Time Theatre.  “My Gal Sal” in Technicolor featuring Rita Hayworth – Victor Mature – John Sutton –Carol Landis.  “A Gentleman at Heart” with Cesar Romero – Carole Landis – Milton Berle.  After the show to Fritz Weisheipl for a beer and lunch.  A perfect day.

10.  Saturday: [2M] Our nice weather is keeping up.  I cleaned up the cellar this afternoon and took a trip to the cottage, brought in the boat motor (outboard) and our fishing rods and tackle.  Thres takes Annie Heip – Thres Fretchel – Mary Ilk – Caroline Drexler to the Armory for Bingo.  Mary Ilk wins ___ dollars.  Thres gets home at 12.45 A.M. Sunday.  Rose Weisheipl is 31 years old today, she’s getting there.  Joe Baier is married 3 years today.  Clifford Reichenberger is laid to rest.  Services at Saint Mary’s Church.  Joe Weisheipl is one of the pallbearers.
11.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns then to work.  Ed Fretchel does some work at the cottage.  In the evening we attend the “Oshkosh” with Joe and Annie Heip.  Cary Cooper and Theresa Wright star in “The Pride of the Yankees.” It is a picture of the life of Lou Gehrig veteran Yankee First Baseman who passed away some time ago.  Babe Ruth is also in the picture.

13.  Tuesday: [6M T   JOE-W. JOXO] Another contingent of draftees leaves today for Fort Sheridan.  Melvin Jansen is among them, also John Hable.  Joe Weisheipl Sr. in to see me at the store this morning.  He’s been looking for a job for a long time.  He’s thru selling liquor.  Kiwanis Luncheon.  Jess Scott speaks on your job and mine in wartime.  Our table Ed Durler –Ed Ledvina – Geo Harrington – Dave Collin and myself.
14.  Wednesday: Left for Milwaukee at 8 Oclock.  Took Joe and Annie Weisheipl along.  This 35 mph driving gets me down.  Took 2 ½ hours to get there.  Stopped at Mutual Drug to see John Lange, had a nice dinner at Fritz Gust’s, then to A.C. McClurgs to see Mr. Grace.  He tells me he was 61 years of age last week, then to Yahr Lange, Wisconsin Pharmacal Company, Bruce Publishing Co., Howdin Distilled Products.  Attended Riverside Theatre, a nice floor show with Jimmie Joys Orchestra “The Merrimacs” of radio fame, “Nelson Sisters” acrobats also 2 Movies “Sin Town” star Constance Bennett” and “Olaf last laughs” star El Brendel, luncheon at “Big Stein” home at 12.45 A.M.

16.  Friday: [10M] Karl Jungen is 21 today.
17.  Saturday: [4M] Cleaned the garage this afternoon.
18.  Sunday: [4M] This is Mission Sunday all over the Catholic World. To 730 Mass at St. Johns, then to work.  Worked 8 hours today.  St. Vincents Bazaar opens today, with the full house.

20.  Tuesday: [N 6M T] Art Mueller takes a day off.  Karl Hansen is here from Wautoma.  They go pheasant hunting.  A beautiful day, temperatures between 65 and 70°.  To Kiwanis Luncheon Ed Ledvina- Dr. Archie Gifford – Eric Baller and myself.

22.  Thursday: [6M N] The weather turns suddenly cold today, after about a month a pleasant days.  Bill Glidden begins work on our kitchen.
23.  Friday: [8M T] Started the furnace today, and it feels mighty comfortable, to have heat all thru the house.
24.  Saturday: [8M] Aunt Mary is 69 years old today.  We treat her to a movie tonite at the Time.  “Riders of the Purple Sage” starring George Montgomery and Mary Howard, also a comic “Shut my Big Mouth” starring Joel E Brown, Adele Mara and Victor Jory.  Grandpa Fretchel is 86 years old today and he is quite well.
25.  Sunday: Last day of St. Vincents Bazaar.  It looks like a grand success.
26.  Monday: Drove to Milwaukee this morning with Phil Laffey.  We took the violin along, which Mr. John Schroeder is trying to get rid of or pawn off on me for 200 dollars.  Met Olaf Breivic, who is an authority on violins.  Mr. Laffey had him put a valuation on the violin.  Mr. Breivic stated 50 dollars was a good price for this violin.  This should put an end to Mr. Schroeder trying to get several hundred dollars for it.  Stopped at Mutual Drug – McClurgs, Yahr Lange, Frank Lotz – Church Mart –Ruby Products Co. –Wisconsin Pharmacal –Roemer Drug –John Pritzlaff Hdwe –Charles E. Turnock’s.
27.  Tuesday: [6M] Had a letter from Donald today.  He is asking for an overcoat; he tells us it gets very cold at St. Nazianz.  Had Donald Bludau as guest at Kiwanis luncheon.  Our table Ed Schrank, Joe Krumrich, O.W. Witte, Charles Behnke, Don and myself.
28.  Wednesday: [6M T] Thres and myself take a drive to Ripon this evening to the Kiwanis District Song Fest.  A nice dinner preceded the singing.  Bald heads were covered with Ripon Kiwanis Caps, mine included.  Our table Mr. Mrs. Leighton Hough, Mr. Mrs. Frank Thew, Mr. Mrs. Kurt Drake, Thres and self.  Our Club won the loving cup for singing.
29.  Thursday: [8M N] Took my Plymouth to “Walter Spaltholz” to have an overhauled.  It has 43 000 miles on it and it is high time to have it taken care of.
30.  Friday: [10M] Our Bean Bag Game is back from St. Vincent's Bazaar.  It made 12 dollars for the Bazaar fund.
