Diary of Alfred E. Potter June, 1942

01.  Monday: [4M N RJXMOK  R5#C] According to the mornings paper, 1250 planes attack Cologne, Germany and about three fourths of the city is on fire.  We have much rain during the night and heavy thunder.  Margaret (Mrs. Arthur) Mueller is 35 years old today.
02.  Tuesday: [6M N RJXMOK] Todays were report, 1036 A.E.F. Bombers attack Essen, Germany.  Dr. RH Bitter drops in at the store.  He is back from Fort Bliss Texas.  Expects to have about a week of leave and then on to Philadelphia.  George Weisheipl is back tonite from Fort Sheridan on leave to wind up his business affairs.  He must be back next Sunday at 4 P.M.  John Barrymore famous actor, laid to rest today at Calvary Cemetery.  He was 60 years of age.
03.  Wednesday: [RNXMOK] Fifteen Jap planes and four Bombers attack the U.S.  Naval Base “Dutch Harbor,” this morning.  Another raid is carried out this afternoon.  Damage done is not known here.  Walter Seelmacher measures or cottage for new floor coverings.  Saw the George Weisheipl in his uniform today.  He looks good.  Tonight we take Ed and Thres Fretchel to the Oshkosh Theatre.  “Remember Pearl Harbor” starring Alan Curtis and Fay McKenzie and “On the Sunny Side” starring Roddy Mc Dowall.  Fritz Weisheipl gets our lunch business after the show.
04.  Thursday: [RDXMOK] Thres is out to get some sugar for canning from the sugar rationing board. She is allowed 43 pounds. Joe Weisheipl Sr. leaves for Waupun tonite with John O'Connor. They are to meet Leo Kostak there and drive to Dallas, Texas for the National Musicians Convention. Julie Anne Baumgartner (Fred's little girl) is 11 years old today.
05.  Friday: [4M RNXMOK] To church at 7 Oclock. I had a peculiar accident last night or early this morning, fell asleep on the davenport with a lit cigar. Thres had also fallen asleep on a chair, but was awakened by the smell of smoke. A good sized hole had been burned in the upholstery of our radio bench. Well, we were lucky. Had a surprise today, Billy Secord from Duluth, Minn. stopped in this afternoon. He is the son of Harold Secord.                   Com.  Regina Hemmer
06.  Saturday: [6M RJXMOK] Dropped in to see Anna Weisheipl, she has the blues so we take route to the Oshkosh to see “To the Shores of Tripoli” in technicolor, starring John Payne – Maureen O’Hara – Randolph Scott and Wm Tracy.  After the show we stop at Harold Bouchelle’s for chicken and then we take her to Club 41, where Corky Weisheipl is spending his farewell night.  Edward Weisheipl is a bartender at Club 41 tonite.  He helps out occasionally when they are very busy.
07.  Sunday: [T] To six oclock Mass at St. Johns. After breakfast took Ed Fretchel to the cottage to build a fence. On the way back stopped at Weisheipl's to bid Corky goodbye. He left at noon (12.20) for Fort Sheridan. I worked on 6 ¾ hours today. After work attended St. Vincents School play, V - for Victory.               Com.  Rev. Ed. Schimberg

10.  Wednesday: [4M RFXMOK] More rain, its rained almost every day.  Took Ed and Thres Fretchel to the Oshkosh.  Thres and I went to the Strand.  “Prophecies of Nostradamus” are very interesting.  After the show to Pete Krizs where we learn that Kenneth’s “King Hi” tavern burnt down with an estimated loss of 2000 dollars.  Laurence and Dolores Kinateder are overnite guest tonite at our house.

12.  Friday: [4M N RJXMOK] Had a card from Joe Weisheipl Sr. today from Dallas Texas.  Edward A. Binder and Rose were married 23 years ago today in New York City.  Sister Linus (Elsie Fretchel) has a birthday, she is 32.
13.  Saturday: [2M RFXMOK] Donald and myself cut grass at the rear of the cottage.  It is very heavy and hard to cut with a lawn mower.  Bob Brand has a small stag party for a half dozen of his friends.  Thres and Mary Ann and myself attend the Oshkosh Theatre.  “The Invaders” is the picture starring Leslie Howard – Laurence Olivier – Raymond Massey.
14.  Sunday: To St. Johns at 6 Oclock.  Temperatures of 43° this morning.  Rose – Marion Weisheipl Mary –Helen Berndt Tiny Getke - _____ Stuebs call for Eddie Weisheipl tonite at the store and are they feeling good!  When I returned from the Post Office about 930 they were in Mary Kollross tavern.  They say “you can’t beat fun.” Annie Weisheipl –Ed and Thres Fretchel are at our house for the evening.  Annie comes in at 6 Oclock with Eddie.  The ladies play some fine sheephead after I get here from work.  I take them home at 2 A.M.
15.  Monday: [4M N RFXMOK] Thres entertains Mrs. Al Barsch – Mrs. Joe Cater.  Fred – Art – Norbert and myself have our bi-weekly meeting tonite.  Joe Weisheipl Sr. is back tonite from Dallas.  Any Weisheipl is accompanying Father Mike Drexler –Anna – and Caroline on a trip to Alverno to visit at the convent and pay respects at the grave of Sister Claire Marie.  Mrs. Caroline Kamm passed away yesterday at one oclock P.M. at her home 105 Boyd St. Her husband Hans died July 1 – 1926.
16.  Tuesday: [6M N ROXMOK] Frank Norkofski is a 59 years old today.  Mrs. Louise Seiberlick passed away Sunday afternoon at 2 Oclock at Mercy Hospital.  Born March 2 – 1869.  Officially we move to the cottage today for the summer.
17.  Wednesday: [6M T RFXMOK] We get a new linoleum at our cottage today. Father Bastian takes six boys to St. Nazianz to visit the Salvatorian Seminary. Our Donald is one of them and is very enthusiastic about the place.
18.  Thursday: [6M T RMOXMOK] Ed Weisheipl tells me he would like more time off.  He says he would rather not make so much money and have more fun.  What a playboy.

21.  Sunday: To six oclock Mass at Saint Johns.  This afternoon Roman and Leona are of good will and bring me a fathers day present.  We are very busy at the store today.  I worked 8 ½ hours.  Joe and Annie Weisheipl take us to the “Strand” tonite.  The Picture “In this our Life” stars Bette Davis – Olivia De Havilland –George Brent –Dennis Morgan, Charles Coburn, Frank Craven – Billie Burke.  We then give them a treat at “Fritz Weisheipls” Home at 1.30 A.M.

23.  Tuesday: [6M N T RHXMOK] Thres had company at the cottage today. Part of the ladies auxiliary of the South Side Business Mens Club spend the day with her.
24.  Wednesday: [4M T RHXMOK] Took Laurence and Dolores Kinateder along to the cottage this noon.  Thres comes to town for Red Cross sewing.  Wm Welch, Coe Drug Co. prescription clerk has a birthday, he is 53.
25.  Thursday: [6M N RHXMOK] Robert Fretchel will be 15 years of age tomorrow.  Leonard Fretchel will be 22 years of age tomorrow.
26.  Friday: [10M RHXMOK] Thres comes in from the cottage this morning, to stay over Saturday. Rose Weisheipl has a call from Kenny today over the phone. He tells her “It was a tough day, but he made her.” Poor Kenny! Eddie Weisheipl has a long distance call tonite from Miss Marion Prehn at Milwaukee. She wants him to pick her up from the 11 oclock train. She tells him she is down and needs cheering up. Well Eddie can do it. Lonie Drexler “Mrs. Cekalski” is over to take her bath at our house tonite. I should have said to borrow our bathtub.
27.  Saturday: [8M RDXMOK] Today turns out to be a warm day.  Sent Father Flanagan balance of pledge for year ending June 1942.  Wrote a letter to Matt Boll and also to Tommy Gallagher, he is now in San Pedro Calif.  John and Ann Drexler celebrate their silver wedding anniversary today.  Alois and Anna Kinateder married fifteen (15) years today.  Took Joe and Anna Weisheipl to the ballgame between Oshkosh Giants and Janesville.  We lost 7-5 in an eleven inning game.  Treated them to chicken at George Buchanans after the game.  Home at 1 A.M.
28.  Sunday:[2M T] To six oclock mass at Saint Johns.  Turns out to be a rather warm day.  Folks go back to the cottage this evening with Laurence and Dolores Kinateder as house guests.  I worked 8 hours and was caught in a storm on the way home.
29.  Monday: [4M N RHXMOK] Turns out to be a rather hot day, temperature about 90°. Officers and Stockholders of Mueller Potter are voted substantial increases in salary because of heavy increase in business the first six months of the year.
