Diary of Alfred E. Potter September, 1942

01.  Tuesday: [4M] Childrens Day at Winnebago County Fair. Don Bludau and myself spent part of the afternoon at the fair. Glenn Stitzel with the Globe Veterinary Line is in charge of the Mueller-Potter booth. Had quite a shower of rain this afternoon. Dropped in to see John Fretschl this afternoon, he is very low.
02.  Wednesday: [4M] Took Glenn Stitzel Jr. and Mrs. Fretchel to the cottage this noon.  Bill and Emma Siewert came out this afternoon.  They usually spend “Oshkosh Fair Day” at the cottage.  Played sheephead until 2 A.M.  Even the children played Michigan Poker until midnight.  The folks all stay over night with us.
03.  Thursday: [6M N] Brought the family back in from the cottage this afternoon. Glenn Stitzel enjoyed it very much, but he did little fishing.  We experience our first County Blackout tonite, and it looks like a success.  It is indeed very, very dark.
04.  Friday: [10M] John Fretchel passed away at 6 Oclock this evening.  Born Jan. 27 – 1888.  First Friday, to St. Vincents Church at 5.30.  Donald serves.                 Com. For Peace, in union with the Holy Father.

06.  [T] To 730 Mass at St. Johns, then to work.
07.  Monday: [4M] Took the Ed Fretchel family to John’s funeral.  Services are at St. Johns Church, and it is a very wet day.  Rain all morning and part of the afternoon.  Harvey Wussow’s sister in law Mrs. Louise MacCune passed away this morning at 11 Oclock at Harvey’s home.

09.  Wednesday: [4M] Today marks an event in Donald's life.  We take him to St. Nazianz to be enrolled as a student in the Salvatorian Seminary.  It rains most of the way over.  Father Vincent Putzer shows us around.  We also enjoy a very fine supper served by the Salvatorian Sisters.  Joe Baier is 38 today.
10.  Thursday: [6M] Three more boys leave today for St Nazians to join Donald.  They are Clarence Drexler – Harold Stadtmueller and Melvin Karst.  Mrs. Alvina Putzer visits with her son Father Vincent.  Today is a lovely day.
11.  Friday: [8M] Was called on for coroner’s jury tonite by Dr. S.A. Steele.  A boy 14 years of age, Daryl Lichtwold was struck while making a turn south on West Algoma by Charles Schmidt going east, in a 1934 Ford.  There was almost instantly killed and his bicycle badly smashed.
12.  Saturday: [4M] The Wisconsin Axle Company is awarded the Army – Navy E for war production efficiency.  This is quite an event.  They are the first concern in Oshkosh to receive this award of merit.  A reception was held at Raulf Hotel in honor of visiting guest army and navy officers.  Many business men and manufacturers were invited among them yours truly and Joe Weisheipl Sr.  We had a fine time and met many fine man, among them Walter Rockwell, president of the Axle Company.  Ed Fretchel is a 57 years old today.  We had a surprise party on him.  Present were his children and families. Carl sent $5 and a telegram from Washington.  I brought him a bottle of good cheer.  The gang at the store a nice pipe and tobacco.  Got home at 2 A.M.  Sunday.  Two parties in one day is too much.
13.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns.  Took Ed Fretchel to the cottage to cut grass.  A beautiful day.  The Brands are out for the weekend.

15.  Tuesday: [6M] Out to view the remains of John Baumgartner at Sitters Funeral Home.  Attended meeting of the O.P.A. at Hotel Raulf tonite, and also got a job.                    M.O.  John Baumgartner
16.  Wednesday: [4M] Loretta Mueller Baumgartner has a birthday, she is 36.  Took Aloys Drexler Jr.  739 -12th St. to St. Nazianz were he intends to enter the Salvatorian Order as a “brother.” We almost had to bring him back home as he is somewhat young two enter the order, but after some persuasion and explaining circumstances Father Bede took him in.  His grandma Mrs. Theresa Drexler was also along.  She and her husband Frank were married 41 years today.  We had Ferdinand Yungwirth, who is staying with his Brother Court and.  Also visited Donald and other Oshkosh Boys.  They are happy.
17.  Thursday: [6M T] Tony and Mary Paulick, 741 – 11th St. had a wedding anniversary yesterday.  They are married ___ years.  Dress is having some of her varicose veins needled by Dr. Ray Wagner.  I did some O.P.A. checking this afternoon with very good results.
18.  Friday: [10M] We are having much rain these days, and also electrical storms.  In Spring Valley, a village of 973 population of blood covered the entire business district, and did much damage.  The entire northwestern part of Wisconsin suffered water and storm damage.  Temperature here is about 73 tonite, and it is very muggy.  I finished O.P.A. checking this afternoon.  Sent Donald a Missal tonite.  I hope he can use it. Allie Kinateder is laid up with a cold.  Our “Aunt Mary” gets bad news today, no more cleaning at Kuehl Studio.
19.  Saturday: [8M] More rain, temperature is cold this morning about a 20° drop overnite.  Tonite we attend the Oshkosh Theatre with Joe and Annie Weisheipl.  “Moontide” featuring Jean Gabin and Ida Lupino, also “The Battle of Midway” official government film of actual battle in Technicolor, also “Mexican Spitfire sees a Ghost” starring Leon Errol –Lupe Velez and Buddy Rogers.
20.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. John and then to work.  Thres plays cards at St. Vincents Hall, Mary visits with Anna Drexler and I take a nap this afternoon.  After work this evening Thres and I attend the Oshkosh Theatre.  “Eagle Squadron” starring Robert Stack –Diana Barrymore, and “Strictly in the Groove” featuring Leon Errol – Martha Tilton – Franklin Pangborn with “Ozzie Nelson” and his orchestra.  This last picture was a scream.

22.  Tuesday: [6M N -½] Attended Kiwanis luncheon as guest of Mr. E.A. Durler.  I also put in my application to join, and it looks like I’m in.
23.  Wednesday: [2M] This is my afternoon out, but the weather is so inclement, I went back to work.  Larry Gerdes is in town, he has a book with him belonging to a David Taylor, uncle to Palmer Taylor at Stevens Point.  I contains examination questions for pharmacist from 1889 to 1900, and many newspaper clippings of interest.  Bill Glidden is painting the inside of the garage.  He’ll have to take a few days off, as there is too much moisture in the air to continue here.
24.  Thursday: [6M] Norbert Mueller takes his family to Northern Wisconsin for few days vacation.  Well Norbert deserves it.
25.  Friday: [10M] Leona (Drexler) Czekalski’s last day of work at the Oshkosh Overall Company.  She has worked there for 15 years.
26.  Saturday: [8M] Took Mary Ann and Dolores Kinateder to the Time Theatre.  Pat OBrien and Glenn Ford in “Flight Lieutenant” and Jimmie “Henry Aldridge” Lydon in “Henry and Dizzy.” Ma Potter plays bingo at the Armory.  She wins a dollar. When she wins there are 13 winners. “Wow” what luck!
27.  Sunday: To St. Johns 730 Mass.  To work by 830 worked until 115 PM.  Then for a chicken dinner.  Thres takes Ed Fretchel to cottage to drain water tank and disconnect pipes.  I worked 8 hours today.  Attended Oshkosh Theatre tonight with Joe and Annie Weisheipl.  Bud Abbott –Lou Costello – and Virginia Bruce star in “Pardon my Sarong” Bruce Bennett – Kay Harris – Edward Norris star in “Sabotaged Squad.” Both pictures are good.  “Dennis Morgan” formerly Stanley Mourner and “Irene Manning” screen stars are here to aid War Bond Drive.

29.  Tuesday: [4M T] To Kiwanis luncheon, nothing exciting happened.  Kiwanians are back at the Athearn Hotel.  Had a most pleasant surprise this afternoon.  Father William A. Renner from Alexandria Minnesota called and spent the evening with us.  Well we did a lot of reminiscing about Mount Calvary days back in 1907-1908.  We were so interested we almost forgot about Father strain.  Well we made it by a few minutes.  Thres gets another varicose vein treatment this afternoon.  Kiwanis Table Charles Roeder – George Savage – Carl Buchholz and myself.
30.  Wednesday: [4M] We are now having some very fine weather, temperatures up to 70°.  Drove to Fond du Lac this afternoon to Dana & Worms to check on George Knoblauch who is applying for a position with us.
