05. Thursday: [6M] Well my
Plymouth came back today after Joe Weisheipl Sr. had it for 11 days making 371
miles. Kenny Kunde is in town on a furlough, he is located in New York. He
takes Naomi Mueller out tonite. Moscow Russia is bombed tonite by the Germans.
After 12 Oclock tonite no typewriters are allowed to be sold or
delivered. Anton - Mary Paulick 741 – 11th St. are taken to Jefferson
Barracks near St. Louis by Eddie Paulick to see their son Bobbie, who is in the
radio naval division.
06. Friday: [8M] To St. Vincents at 7 A.M. The Oshkosh All Stars win the National Loop
Basket Ball Championship by defeating Fort Wayne 52-46. This is the second year they have won this
championship. Sports writers – coaches –
and Radio man had picked the following for an All Star National League Team. Charles Chuckovits, Toledo F. Ben Stephens, Goodyear F. Lee Roy Edwards, Oshkosh C. Bob Mc Dermott, Ford Wayne G. Charley Shipp, Oshkosh G. Took Margaret Hemmer home from church this

07. Saturday: [8M] Mary Ann’s Birthday, she is 12
years of age. Took Joe and Annie
Weisheipl Mary Ann and Dolores Kinateder to the Strand to see “How Green was my
Valley” starring Walter Pidgeon and Maureen O’Hara, Donald Crisp, Anna Lee and
Little Roddy Mc Dowall. He is the find
of the year among juvenile characters.
After the show had the Heip’s over to the House for few hands of cards. At 12:40 A.M. I have a call from Henry Kieckhafer
telling me someone had broken into our Oregon St. store. After (continued

08. (Continued) investigating
I find that both cash registers had been rifled, one of about 35 dollars, the
other about 5 dollars. No merchandise seems to be taken. Well, we're lucky. The
safe has not been touched. I get to bed at 2.30 this morning. Well, up
again at 5.15, shave, and attend 6 Oclock Mass at St. Johns. Com.

09. Monday: Took the 10.42
train to Milwaukee this morning. Stopped
at McClurgs to see Mr. Grace, bought some spring and summer merchandise, also
to Yahr Lange’s to pick up some clutch tips, then two Wisconsin Pharmaceutical
Offices for a meeting of the Chairmen of the Civilian Defense (Pharmacy
Division). Met some of the pharmacist
from all over the state. Workmen at
Foster – Lothman Company go out on a strike today.
10. Tuesday: [8M] Donald Bludau has an increase in
the family tonight at 7 P.M. It is a
little girl and they are very happy, altho he lost a dollar at to Norman Brown.
11. Wednesday: [8M] To Lenten Service at St.
Vincents tonite. Heard part of the All
Star – Detroit game over the radio. The
game is very close and exciting.
12. Thursday: [8M N] The
Oshkosh "All Stars" won the "Worlds National Basket Ball
Championship" at Chicago last night by defeating the Detroit team. Score
43-41. Tonite they receive a rousing welcome as they come home about 7 Oclock.
A big parade from the depot to their headquarters. The mayor and other notables
spoke over the radio. Sim Menzel broke his right arm today in a peculiar
accident. He was getting out of bed, his one foot became entangled in the bed
sheet and he fell out of bed and broke the arm above the elbow.
13. Friday: [10M N] The “All-Stars” are
recuperating from the strain of their championship game. Thres - Annie Heip and
Thres Fretchel played Bingo at the Eagles last night. Thres needed one number
to win 50 dollars, but the number was not forthcoming. We lost our “Dickie Bird”
tonite. He has been looking rather sickly all day. Well he got to be about 15
years old.
14. Saturday: [10M] The Heips and ourselves attend
the Strand Theatre to see “Captains of the Clouds” in Technicolor featuring
James Cagney – Dennis Morgan and Brenda Marshall. Treated them to A “Turkey lunch” at Pete King’s,
after the show.
15. Sunday: To 6:00 mass at St. Johns. Then to work and it was work today getting
out the Post Office Money Order Report.
We issued 441 money orders and took in (5736.72) dollars. This is I believe the largest report we have
had since we took on the Postal Station.
Sylvia Mertz Pitz entertains the Mertz family in honor of Matt’s 75th
birthday. All are present with the
exception of Irene and family and a good time is enjoyed by all.

19. Thursday: [8M] Mrs. Theresa Mertz passed away
suddenly this morning about 7 Oclock. This is a great shock to her family and many
friends. Altho she has not been in the
best of health death was unexpected.
Born at Poygan May 14-1880. William
Wachholz R#2 Nekimi died suddenly yesterday afternoon in the business office of
a grain elevator at Fond du Lac, where he had just finished unloading his grain. Born December 29 – 1876.
20. Friday: [10M] Viewed the remains of Mrs. Matt
Mertz at the home. M.O. Mrs. Matt Mertz
21. Saturday: [8M] Played cards at Mrs. Anna Ostertags
tonite and won a can of Thanksgiving pumpkin.
Twenty tables are in play, the proceeds go to the purchase of a Mass Kit
for an army chaplain.
22. Sunday: To six Oclock
Mass at St. Johns. To work at 8.45 until
115. Mrs. Mertz is
taken from the home to Fiss and Bills funeral parlors today. Most of the relatives from out of the city
are here. This is a beautiful day. After work tonite we attended the Strand
Theatre “To be or not to be” is the picture featuring Jack Benny and Carole
Lombard. This is the last picture Carole
Lombard made before she was killed in an airplane accident.
23. Monday: [4M N] Attended funeral of Mrs. Mertz
this morning. Took along Thres Fretchel –Mary
Ilk –Lena Baier. Well we sure spend a nice
quiet day at the south store today.
Business is good but it is not very noisy around, and why is that? Well Eddie Weisheipl is off today, and Rose is
so hoarse she can hardly talk, and that’s that.
24. Tuesday: [8M N] “Forty Hours Devotion” begins
at St. Johns this morning. Donald up at
430 to serve at Sunnyview San. For
Father Bastian. Took Rose Weisheipl over
to Jim McGinn’s Rose Marie Beauty Shop this evening. She gets a permanent.

26. Thursday: [8M N] Dr.
Norman Kleinschmidt gives my teeth the check of this morning, and finds a few
small cavities. Mama Potter gets a new
wash machine today, and its in all automatic “Bendix Home Laundry.” It’s a
swell outfit, you could call it a piece of furniture and it sets Papa back 18950.

28. Saturday: [8M] This morning at 1225 a 9 pound 5
ounce baby boy is born to Margaret Nuernberg Hemmer. Both baby and mother are doing fine. Its the biggest baby in the hospital now – 22
inches long. The father Joe Hemmer is
also doing as well as can be expected.
Marion Fretchel is 19 today.
29. Sunday: To 730 Mass at St.
Johns, Foresters to Easter Communion.
Then to work until 115 P.M. Com.
