Diary of Alfred E. Potter November, 1942

01.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns, then to work.  Bishop Rohde confirms at class at 3:00 this afternoon at St. Johns.  I do not feel well today, much bloated and gas bothers me plenty.  This is the third day and I hope to get over it soon.  My Plymouth is back in the garage tonite.  Father Bastian announces 3203 dollars made at our Bazaar.               Com. “Happy Hour of Death” for Thres – Donald – Mary Ann – Aunt Mary – myself    Visits: Stanislaus Jarosch – Cath.  Holzbauer – Pancratius – Mary – Joe – Frank – John – Theodore Drexler, Matt and Josephine Baier, John Fretchel – Otto Lang
02.  Monday: [4M N T] To Church at 7 A.M. St. Vincents                   Com.  Stanislaus Jarosch, Catherine Holzbauer Visits: Joseph – Eleanor Heinzl, Wenzel –Caroline Miller – Joe – Louis – John – Frank Miller – Wenzel – Alvina Tauber
03.  Tuesday: [8M N] To Kiwanis luncheon.  Goodrich representatives demonstrate how synthetic rubber is made.  This is also election day.  Mrs. Frank Troxell passed away at 720 this evening, rather suddenly.  Born Sept 23 – 1879 Germany, married to Frank May 31-1900.  Survived by 8 sons and 6 daughters.  After work tonite we go to Frank Keefe’s home with Joe and Anna Weisheipl.  Quite a number of his friends are there to help him celebrate.  Frank is re-elected to Congress from the sixth Wisconsin District.
04.  Wednesday: [2M] I feel woozy this morning and its my birthday, and a quiet one too.  Attended monthly meeting directors of Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce at the Athearn.  Meeting lasted until 2.30 P.M.
05.  Thursday: [N] We are finding ourselves short in the post office department these days.  For several days we are short about 40 dollars.
06.  Friday: [4M] First Friday – St. Vincents at 7 Oclock.  View the remains of Mary Troxell, this evening.  Harry Kujawa and family are in tonite.              Com.  Mary Troxell

08.  Sunday: To St. Vincents at 730 with Holy Name Society.  Left at 11.45 for St. Nazianz to visit Donald.  Took along Aunt Lena Baier and Joe and Anna Weisheipl.  Donald is looking well, brought him a violin made by Titus in 1906 for Phil Laffey.  It should be well broken in after 35 years of exercise.  The Dramatic Guild at The Seminary put on a play Salvanarola “The Flame of Florence”.  The play was well rendered.  On our way home stopped at Miller's Restaurant Chilton, for a nice meal.  On our arrival home, took Lena out to Ann Ostertag's.  Little Jimmie has a birthday.  Anna Weisheipl played Bingo at Sacred Heart and won 5 times.
09.  Monday: [6M] Naomi Mueller has a soldier boy taking her home these nights.  Thres attends Sacred Heart Ladies guest – night meeting and entertainment, I am the chauffeur, reason bad weather, passengers Thres –Mary Mauritz – Thres Fretchel – Alvina Putzer – Mrs. Herman Drexler.
10.  Tuesday: [4M] Had a nice visit with Father Bastian this evening.  He wants to know all about Donald.  Left some Mass offerings and paid him my pledge on our new church organ which he expects to be installed by Christmas.                M.O.  Stanislaus Jarosch – Katherine Holzbauer –Anton Holzbauer Sr. and Jr., Mrs. Mary Bauer – Pancratius – Mary Drexler – Joe – Frank –Theodore – John Drexler –Mathias –Josepha Baier
11.  Wednesday: [2M] A very quiet armistice day in Oshkosh.  Thres – Annie Heip – Thres Fretchel attend St. Johns Bingo and I take Joe Heip – Ed Fretchel to the Oshkosh Theatre.  We see two good pictures, “Springtime in the Rockies” a Technicolor starring “Betty Grable – John Payne –Carmen Miranda – Cesar Romero, and “To Man in the Trunk” a mystery comedy.  It sure was funny.  We wound up the evening at Fritz Weisheipl’s.  I dropped in to see Anna Drexler this afternoon, she is still in bed.
12.  Thursday: [4M] Joe Weisheipl Sr. starts on his new job tonight.  He is guard at the Wisconsin Public Service Plant near the Fox River.  He works from 8 P.M. to 6 A.M.  Until more help is available.  Joe is very happy about it, because this is the first real job he is head for some years.
13.  Friday: [8M T] Thres has a birthday, 56 today.  She is feeling quite well.  Forty Hours Devotion begins at Sacred Heart.  We are soon to have gas rationing. I register this afternoon at Jefferson School.  Radio Reports and aunts rescue of Capt. Wm Cherry Jr.  Pilot of Capt. Eddie Reichenbachers plane lost in the Pacific since Oct 21st.  To Dr. Norman Kleinschmit for my semi-annual tooth inspection.  He did not need to fill any, but some of them are getting somewhat loose.
14.  Saturday: [4M] Radio announcers rescue of Capt. Eddie Reichenbacher with two comrades on a life raft.  The rescue was made about 600 miles north of Samoa.  Joe Reichel laid to rest.  Services at St. Peter’s.
15.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns. Forty Hours ends at Sacred Heart.  A lovely day to day, temperature above 56°.
16.  Monday: [4M] A lovely day temperature is 61°.  Attended Annual Banquet of Oshkosh Apostolate at the Athearn Hotel.  Rev. Lambert Scanlon acted as toastmaster.  Father Geimer former director who is now located at Walsh was here.  Rev. Rob.  McCarthy was the speaker of the evening and it was a fun listening to his witticisms.  He is located at Denmark.  Our table Mr. and Mrs. Ed Baranowski, William Castle –Thres and myself.
17.  Tuesday: Missed by Kiwanis Luncheon today.  Mr. McNaughton and Loyd Buchler, rep. Parke Davis are here to put in a 6 months supply of their merchandise, due to impaired transportation facilities.  Had a letter from Donald and also his quarterly report.  Well, it is his first one and it could be better.  I hope he’ll improve in the next quarter.  Any Weisheipl wins one dollar at the Veterans Foreign Wars.  Lawrence Spanbauer is 30 years of age today.  He is Margaret Fretchel’s husband.
18.  Wednesday: Take advantage of the very nice weather and make a business trip to Milwaukee with Thres.  Bought quite a number of items at the Continental Premium Mart on Third Street, dropped in at Graybars and General Electric Supply.  Had some very tough chicken at Mader’s Restaurant, then over to Mutual Drug Corp.  John Lange let me have quite a number of hard to get items.  When we were loaded, we had hardly enough room for ourselves in the car.  Back home at 730 P.M.
19.  Thursday: [2M T] The weather changes to moist but the temperature is still about 60°.  Thres plays Bingo at the Eagles, wins nothing as usual.  Annie Weisheipl wins 10 dollars.
20.  Friday: [6M] Forty Hours Devotion begins at St. Vincents.  Well our 40 dollars is back in the postal station.  On November 3d Naomi Mueller sent 40 dollars and 45 cents too much to the main post office when sending in our daily report.
21.  Saturday: [4M] To Mass at St. Vincents at 7 Oclock, also to evening service at 7.30.  Took Annie Heip and Jennie Miller to the Armory for Bingo.  Well Annie wins 335 that makes 1435 she won on Bingo this week, not so bad.              Com.  Theresa Mertz
22.  Sunday: Thres – Mary Ann and myself attend Foresters Memorial Mass at St. John’s and then worked for me.  Put in 8 hours today.  Forty Hours ends at St. Vincents.  Father David Bunklmann preaches tonite.  Charles Roeder has a birthday today.               Com.  Deceased Members C.O.F.
23.  Monday: [6M] Harry Ferry is in town and he has a birthday, he is 61 today.
24.  Tuesday: [2M N] To Kiwanis Luncheon and we had Turkey, nice and tender too.  The Rev. Leonard J. Christian who has been in the Orient for 30 years, spoke to us about China and its 450 million people.  A very interesting talk.  Saxophone quartet from the Oshkosh Hi School, among them Robert Fretchel played for us.  Received a letter from Donald, short and sweet.
25.  Wednesday: [4M] We had company tonite Annie Weisheipl – Ed and Thres Fretchel.  Gave Ed three of my shirts.  Adolf Hitler caught hell as usual from Annie.  Party broke up at 230 A.M. Thursday.
26.  Thursday: Up at 815 A.M. Attended Thanksgiving High Mass at St. Johns.  Had a 17 pound goose for dinner and it was delicious, even Tommy was at table as usual on a holiday.  I took some pictures of him at table.  This morning we have quite a blizzard, temperatures around 20°. One could really call this the first day of winter.  This afternoon Thres –Mary Ann and myself attend the Oshkosh “Manila Calling” starring Lloyd Nolan and Carole Landis and “Girl Trouble” starring Don Ameche – Joan Bennett – Billy Burke.  Tonite I work at the store.
27.  Friday: [4M N] It surely looks like Christmas out, a beautiful blanket of snow covers the ground.
28.   Saturday: Mary Meidl and Elsie Kirsch have an out of the ordinary and yet pleasant experience at the Armory Bingo.  They pay a nickel each to play a Crazy Bingo which pays one hundred dollars and they win, pay off 50 dollars each.
29.  Sunday: To six Oclock Mass at St. Johns.  In the afternoon took Aunt Mary and Aunt Lena Baier to the Oshkosh.  “Abbott and Costello” are start in “Who done it.” Very comical, also “Boston Blackie goes Hollywood” with “Chester Morris.”
30.  Monday: A fire in the “Coconut Grove” nightclub Saturday night caused the death of 479 people.  A 16 year old busboy Stanley F. Tomaszeski lit a match so he could see to replace an electric light bulb, which had been unscrewed by a prankster, the match started the decorations afire.  Joe Weisheipl Sr. has quite an eruption on his face and hands.  This may be a relapse from what he had some time ago.  Rose Weisheipl has a bad cold today, affects her eyes and nose and sneezes are frequent.  More snow today.  This surely makes it look like winter.  Every one who owns a car is having the tank filled with gasoline.  Rationing begins Dec 1st.
