Diary of Alfred E. Potter November, 1941

01.  Saturday: [8½M RHXHK] Donald serves 7 Oclock Mass.  Another day of rain.          Com.  Grandma Baier
02.  Sunday: [2M] To 730 High Mass St. Vincents.  Today is a beautiful day.  Worked until 12.45, after dinner a short nap, then to “Poor Souls” service at St Vincents.  A few visits to St. Johns, then a ride out into the country.  Back to work at 445.  Thres plays Bingo at Sacred Heart and Joe Weisheipl and myself take a ride to Neenah – Menasha – Appleton after 9 Oclock.  Stopped at Stearns (Barnett) Drug Store at Neenah.  Mr. Leffingwell clerks there.  Stopped at Schlintz’s Appleton.  Harvey Shlurtz tells me Rufus Lowell passed away at 1 Oclock this morning.  Supper at Stroke at 8 last night at the store while waiting on a customer.   Com.  “Happy Hour of Death.”
03.  Monday: [7M RHXHK] Another lovely day.  To Church at 630.  Assisted at 2 Holy Mass is made several visits.  The Church celebrates “All Souls Day” today.  Donald serves 630 Mass.  A meeting of the Stockholders of Mueller Potter Drug tonite at the South Side Store.  All stockholders are voted a raise.  Business is good.  William Glidden loses his auto driver slices today for one year.          Com. 04.  Tuesday: [4½M RHXHK] Well I am another year older, 51 years but don’t feel that old.
05.  Wednesday: [5M] Attended supper at Emmanuel Evangelical Church tonite.  Dr. Fred Kronzer and Mrs. are at our table.  Rev. Stange is elated, looks to be about 700 folks had been served.  After supper we spend the evening with Bill and Emma Siewert.  A pleasant visit ends at 115  A.M.  Mrs. Anna Weisheipl plays Bingo at the American Legion and wins 990.
06.  Thursday: [5M RPXHK] Emma Siewert is 55 years of age today.
07.  Friday: [7M] The ground is covered with snow when we get up this morning.  Snow fall slightly all day, temperature is at 35°and much is melted.  First Friday to St. Vincents at 7 A.M.
08.  Saturday: [7M] Our “Fall Rexall Sale” ends today.  Took Joe and Anna Weisheipl to the Strand Theatre.  “One Foot in Heaven” starring Frederic March and Martha Scott is one of the pictures.  “Nothing but the Truth” featuring “Bob Hope and Paulette” is a scream.  After the movies we treated them to a “chicken” at Harold Bouchelle’s.
09.  Sunday: To St. Johns at 730 then to work.  After dinner to Appleton to inventory the “Rufus Lowell Drug Store” stock.  Met Norm Brown at his home.  Joe Witmer is attorney for the estate.  Met Tommy at the store, also John Letz.  Well I’ve known John, a good many years and he is not getting younger.  Took 5 hours to complete the job.  Had a chicken at Norm’s after our work was done.  Sybella is looking fine and so is the baby.  Back home at 10 P.M.  To the store to complete some orders, call it a day at 12.30 A.M.

12.  [7M] Will and Emma Siewert are over tonite.  We go with them to view the remains of Mrs. John Hackbarth, at the Marquart Funeral Home.  After we got back home we played sheephead.  It was a bad night for Emm, she did not win one game.  Well we had a good time anyway.  They stayed until 2.15 A.M.
13.  Thursday: [7M RHXHK] Ma Potter is 55 years old today.  The Siewerts help usher in the birthday by stay until 2.15 this morning.  Mrs. Hackbarth is laid to rest this afternoon.  Congress passed the Neutrality Repeal Bill today.  The voting was close 212 -194.  This means that American ships may sale anywhere in the world under the protection of their own flag and guns, even into belligerent ports, and war zones.
14.  Friday: [5M RNXHK] Richard Kirkham, Schick representative is at our South Side Store to service Schick Razors and sell new ones.  He is the manager of the Milwaukee Schick Service Dept.
15.  Saturday: [7M RJXHK] Took a drive with Emma and Will Siewert tonite.  Drove to Fond du Lac, visited Ed Worm, their business is very good.  Stopped at Emil Lemke’s on Hi way 41, from there to Harold Bouchelle’s for a lunch.  Bill has quite a scare, he is the 2 – $10 bills short in his wallet.  Drove back to Lemke’s but did not find them.  Naomi Mueller takes in the evening off, goes to Green Bay.
16.  Sunday: [2M] Will Siewert remembers he left his money at the shop, so he did not lose it after all. To 730 High Mass at St. Vincents, then to work.  Put in Eight hours today.  Stopped at George Buchanan’s for short visit tonite Thres attends ending of Sacred Heart “40 Hour Devotion.” Rev. Michael Drexler preaches the Sermon, they say short but very nice.  After church she and Annie Heip attend St. Johns Turkey Bingo and win nothing, as usual.  Naomi Mueller takes in Packer Cardinal Game at Green Bay.  Packers win 17-9.
17.  Monday: [RNXHK] A lovely wash day of the ladies, temperatures well up in the 60’s.

20.  Thursday: This is not Thanksgiving Day officially, but the President has designated today as the day, so we celebrate.  We have a nice tender Turkey for dinner.  In the afternoon we call on Jacob and Anna Nuernberg or celebrating their golden wedding anniversary today.  Father John Nuernberg celebrated A Jubilee Mass for them at 9 Oclock this morning.  I worked from 430 to 600, then took Joe and Anna Weisheipl to the Oshkosh.  Laurel and Hardy play “Great Guns.” Edward Robinson – Lorraine Day – Edward Arnold star in “Unholy Partners.” After the show we play cards at our house.  The Heips win.  Party breaks up at 115 A.M.  Took them home at 130 A.M.
21.  Friday: [7M] Forty hours Devotion begins at St. Vincents.  Father Haen preaches the sermon tonight.
22.  Saturday: [7M RNXHK] To church at 7 A.M.  Father Haen offers the Mass.  Little Joseph Baier Jr. has a birthday.  He is one year old today.  It is quite a thrill for him.          Com.  Most forgotten soul in Purgatory
23.  Sunday: To 730 High Mass St. Vincents.  Then to work as usual.  Worked only 7 hours today.  Forty Hours ends at St. Vincents tonite.  Father Dave Bunklmann has the sermon.         Com. Ven Sister M. Davidica

26.  Wednesday: [7M] Took Anna and Joe Weisheipl to the Oshkosh tonite.  “The Birth of the Blues” featuring Bing Crosby – Mary Martin and Rochester.  After the show we enjoyed a steak at Ray Robbins.  Home at 1 A.M.

29.  Saturday: [7M RDXHK] Harry Kujawa's sister Leona is married today at Berlin.  Anna - Leona Drexler and Roman, Leona's sweetheart attend, but when they get there, the newlyweds are gone on their honeymoon
30.  Sunday: To 6 Oclock Mass at St. Johns.  Took Ed and Robert Fretchel and Donald to our cottage to close it up for the winter.  There are quite a number of hunters out, this begin
