Diary of Alfred E. Potter July, 1943

01.  Thursday: My duties as clerk of postal station No. I officially begin today.
02.  
03.  Saturday: No rest for the wicked, I had to work until after 10 oclock tonite to complete my work.  Ordinarily I do not work Saturday afternoon and evening during summer. To seven oclock Mass at St. Vincents.  Edward Weisheipl and Marge (Haverty) Weisheipl go to Great Lakes to visit Joe Jr.                   Com.  Catherine Holzbauer
04.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. John, then to work until 1 P.M.  Took Ed – Thres – Robert – Grandpa Fretchel, and Weisheipl to the cottage.  Mary Ann has Carol Steinert as house guest.  “Mickey” Marion Fretchels dog went along too.  It turns out to be a lovely day.  The women as usual play sheephead until 130 A.M.  Harry – Agnes – Mary and Jennie Kujawa drive over from Berlin 40 evening.  When Harry is not busy at the Bank, he works in the pea cannery.               Com. 05.  Monday: Not much activity today.  I get up late this morning.  Ed and Bob Brand went out fishing but caught nothing.  Ed and I tried toward evening, also nothing doing.  Robert Fretchel hitch hiked to town tonite.  Annie Heip also had to go to town because those small children from 24 to 32 years of age would not wake up in time to go to work in the morning.  I couldn’t very well make a special trip so she had to stay over night.  Played sheephead until midnight.  The quarter beer is gone too.
06.  Tuesday: Back on the job this morning.  Everything turned out OK at the Weisheipls, Rose made breakfast for Matt and everybody got to work on time.  Joe Sr. said she could stay a month, they would get along OK.  This afternoon Alois Mugerauer – Esther and children Judy – Marlene and Nancy come out to stay with us over Wednesday.  Thres attended South Side Business Mens Auxiliary Ladies picnic at Morgans.
07.  Wednesday: Spent an afternoon of rest today and so did the Mugerauers, it turned out a lovely day not too hot.  The folks tried fishing this morning, no luck.  Naomi Mueller takes a day off, goes fishing in Lake Winnebago
08.  Thursday: Naomi is much sunburned today. This is about all she caught yesterday, no fish. Donald worked his first full day at the store, put in 11 ½ hours and he sure was tired tonite. Took Matt Weisheipl to the cottage tonite.
09.  Friday: Received a letter from Carl Fretchel today from New Caledonia.  It was mailed June 16th and sent via Air Mail.  I think regular mail travels faster than that.  He received the harmonikas I gave to Ed to send him.
10.  Saturday: Matt Weisheipl and myself do a little fishing and then we go bathing at the sand dock.  This is my first swim in the lake this year.  Back to town tonite.  Matt’s vacation is about over.
11.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns then to work.  To the cottage this afternoon.

13.  Tuesday: Its a terribly hot day and I did not go to Kiwanis luncheon.
14.  Wednesday: Took Aunt Lena Baier – Ed and Thres Fretchel along to the cottage this noon.  Its a lovely day not too hot but the lake was rough.  Ed and I tried to fish, the anchors would not hold the boat.  The ladies got me for sheephead tonight and we play until 130 A.M. to bed at 2 A.M.  Thres Fretchel and Lena are bed partners and they surely had fun.
15.  Thursday: Jennie Miller –Mary Schneider Rose Miller – Anna Frank – Thres Kellerman –Clara Andrashko – Kate Duex – Emma Heppler – Anna Sippl – Ann Drexler (Mrs. John) – Annie Weisheipl and dog “Freckles” are out to the cottage for their annual outing.  Thres Fretchel comes out the evening.  When I come home tonite I find a few leftovers Thres Kellerman –Clara Andrashko – Thres Fretchel.  Their chauffeur did not come so they staid overnite.  Donald is up to 230 this morning, Father Ott has mass at 330.  After breakfast he takes Donald – Clarence Drexler and Melvin Karst to Sturgeon Bay.
16.  Friday: Donald came back last night about 10 oclock.  It was a swell day for an outing that the fish did not bite.  I brought Thres Fretchel back to town this morning.  Thres Kellerman and Clara Andrashko were taken home by Caroline Kellerman this afternoon about 4 o’clock.  Had quite a heavy rain this afternoon.  Thres moves back to town with Aunt Lena and Mary Ann.  Little Tommy Jr. is better today.  He was somewhat indisposed yesterday
17.  Saturday: Carrie Bauer has a surprise party on her dad tonight.  Joe and Annie Heip, Thres and myself are there with Joe Grabl and Clara – Louis and Mary Mauritz –Eddie Bauer and family.
18.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns then to work.  This afternoon took Thres and Mary Ann to the Strand.  “The Human Comedy” Featuring Mickey Roomy – Frank Morgan –Fay Banter and a Comedy “Yanks Ahoy” with William Tracy and Joe Sawyer.  This evening took Ed and Thres Fretchel along with our family to visit Mr. and Mrs. Mueller out at “Fahrnwald” Al Fuhs and Mrs. and Harold – Eva Mueller and kiddies are there.
19.  Monday: Had Harry Ferry over for the noon day meal.  Thres with much surprised and somewhat embarrassed.  Took Harry along to People’s Brewery and who should be coming along – Thres and Emma Siewert also after some beer.  Emma and Bill Siewert are with us at the cottage.  Played cards until 2 A.M.
20.  Tuesday: [T] The Ladies Auxiliary South Side Business Mens Club spend the day at the cottage.  John Bauer -743 -12th is 74 years of age today.  Donald Jungen also has a birthday today.  He is 17.
21.  Wednesday: Joe Weisheipl Jr. and Ed Fretchel Jr. and William Lange arrived home for furlough from Great Lakes.
22.  Thursday: The 740th Battalion U.S. Army Task Force is in the city with war equipment and about 800 men. They have mass at Menominee Park, a display on Main Street between Otter and Washington, parade at 6 P.M. and final program at Fair Grounds at 715 P.M. We all move to town for the doings with Emma and Bill having been our guests for the last few days.
23.  Friday: Frank Kimball –Joe Weisheipl Jr. and Donald spent part of the day at the cottage fishing – playing cribbage etc.

25.  Sunday: To St. John’s at 6 Oclock with Thres. after breakfast to work until 1 P.M.  Took Aunt Mary –Mary Ann and Thres to Riverside Cemetery this afternoon.  Matt the Nuernbergs with Joe and Margaret Hemmer out there.  Then to the South Park.  Ohio Street Merchants Picnic is on today.  Met plenty of folks we know.  Took Bill Mauritz and family home.  In the evening a ride to Menominee Park and then home.  News comes over the radio that “Mussolini” has resigned by request as Premiere of Italy.               Com.  “Happy hour of death.”
26.  Monday: Thres moves back to the cottage.  It is quite hot these days and not very pleasant in town.  Betty Hill is Mary Ann’s house guest.  Martial law is proclaimed thru out Italy.  King Vittoria Emanuele appoints Marshall Pietro Badoglio as premier to take Mussolini’s place.
27.  Tuesday: Arthur Hill Jr., Dick Hill, and Donald ride their bicycles from town to the cottage.
28.  Wednesday: Did some fishing with the boys this afternoon.  We got 10 good sized perch.  Art and Loretta Hill visit with us this evening.  They take Art junior back to town.  He must be on the job in the morning.
29.  Thursday: Dr. Norman Kleinschmit checks my teeth this morning.  No fillings this time.  Naomi Mueller enjoys Eddie Weisheipl’s lap this afternoon in my office, until I get there and spoil the fun.
